First is the long-awaited release of Alex Proyas’ director’s cut of &lt;i&gt;Dark City&lt;/i&gt; (Warner, also Blu-Ray). A flop on its original release, &lt;i&gt;Dark City&lt;/i&gt; has in the intervening years become something of a cult film, its critical reputation salvaged in part by the ongoing support of Roger Ebert, who memorably chose it as his #1 film of 1998. With this director’s cut, Proyas has added more than ten minutes of footage to an already compelling original, in addition to making other noticeable changes (not least, dropping the introductory voiceover that was present in the theatrical cut). In addition to the original disc’s commentaries by the filmmakers and Ebert, the new edition includes two new featurettes, a review of the film by Neil Gaiman, and a number of other features. Most double-dips and “director’s cuts” are largely marketing department bluster, but &lt;i&gt;Dark City&lt;/i&gt; should prove to be worth the upgrade.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/PrivilegeDVD.bmp"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/PrivilegeDVD.bmp" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;My other pick this week is Peter Watkins’ &lt;i&gt;Privilege&lt;/i&gt; (New Yorker), a movie which as some of you might recall &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/controlpanel/blogs/”"&gt;I loved so much I kind of want to marry it&lt;/a&gt;. At the time I originally saw the film, I had no inkling that it would be released on DVD, as for years it had been unavailable in any home-viewing format, and was only available to &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/Masters%20of%20Horror%20S2.jpg"&gt;&lt;/a&gt;theatrical venues in a single print. So if you’ve been waiting eagerly to see &lt;i&gt;Privilege&lt;/i&gt;- and Lord knows you should have been- your day has finally arrived. New Yorker’s DVD is light on special features, but you know what? It doesn’t matter. That it’s available is cause enough for celebration, and should lead to the film becoming the cult classic it so richly deserves to be.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Other classics coming this week to DVD include the &lt;i&gt;Tyrone Power Matinee Idol Collection&lt;/i&gt; (Fox, includes 10 feature films) and &lt;i&gt;WarGames: 25th Anniversary Edition&lt;/i&gt; (MGM).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As for recent releases, you know it’s a good week when the release of a Martin Scorsese film on DVD isn’t the biggest story. Nevertheless, it’s still nice to have Scorsese’s Stones doc &lt;i&gt;Shine a Light&lt;/i&gt; (Paramount, also Blu-Ray) available, even if it can’t match the spectacle of seeing the film in IMAX. Other recent releases coming to DVD include: the stoner sequel &lt;i&gt;Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay&lt;/i&gt; (New Line, also Blu-Ray); Owen Wilson in &lt;i&gt;Drillbit Taylor&lt;/i&gt; (Universal, also Blu-Ray); the famously Oscar-snubbed Israeli crowdpleaser &lt;i&gt;The Band’s Visit&lt;/i&gt; (Sony); Doug Pray’s documentary &lt;i&gt;Surfwise&lt;/i&gt; (Magnolia); the year’s non-Mamet MMA drama &lt;i&gt;Never Back Down&lt;/i&gt; (Summit); the postapocalyptic actioner &lt;i&gt;Doomsday&lt;/i&gt; (Universal, also Blu-Ray). Also, three direct-to-DVD sequels: &lt;i&gt;Lost Boys: The Tribe&lt;/i&gt; (Warner, also Blu-Ray), &lt;i&gt;WarGames: The Dead Code&lt;/i&gt; (MGM), and &lt;i&gt;Stargate: Continuum&lt;/i&gt; (MGM, also Blu-Ray).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This week’s TV on DVD releases include: &lt;i&gt;Centennial: The Complete Series&lt;/i&gt; (Universal); &lt;i&gt;Law &amp;amp; Order: Special Victims Unit Season 7&lt;/i&gt; (Universal); and &lt;i&gt;Witchblade: The &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/Masters%20of%20Horror%20S2.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/Masters%20of%20Horror%20S2.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;Complete Series&lt;/i&gt; (Warner). This week also brings the release of &lt;i&gt;Masters of Horror Season 2&lt;/i&gt; (Anchor Bay), and while many of the installments are of dubious quality, at least the box set can boast this week’s coolest packaging.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Finally, Blu-Ray only releases this week include the Paramount’s Jack Ryan tetralogy of &lt;i&gt;The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger&lt;/i&gt;, and &lt;i&gt;The Sum of All Fears&lt;/i&gt;. Also of note: &lt;i&gt;Beowulf: The Director’s Cut&lt;/i&gt; (Paramount); &lt;i&gt;Top Gun&lt;/i&gt; (Paramount); &lt;i&gt;The Lost Boys&lt;/i&gt; (Warner); and &lt;i&gt;Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle&lt;/i&gt; So for all of you who were hoping to read this week&amp;#39;s Roundup over a mid-morning snack (hi Mom!), I&amp;#39;m truly sorry.  I&amp;#39;ll do my best to post on time in the future.&lt;/i&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
In a busy weekend for specialty releases, Gus Van Sant&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;Paranoid Park&lt;/i&gt; came out on top, with an impressive per-screen average of $14,914 on two screens.  The IFC Films release, which debuted at Cannes last year, led a weekend that saw eleven new arthouse releases plus a number of strong holdovers from previous weeks.  According to Mark Boxer, IFC&amp;#39;s VP of Sales and Distribution, &amp;quot;The audience for the film consisted of Gus Van Sant fans and a strong turnout from the youthful/skateboarding community. The reviews for the film have been very strong from New York and the film will roll out to the top fifteen markets within the next two weeks.&amp;quot;
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Holding steady at #2 was last weekend&amp;#39;s champion, Ramin Bahrani&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;Chop Shop&lt;/i&gt; (Koch Lorber), which in its single-screen engagement dropped only 5% from last weekend&amp;#39;s take.  Debuting strongly at #3 was David Gordon Green&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;Snow Angels&lt;/i&gt; (Warner Independent), with another debut, Ira Sachs&amp;#39; &lt;i&gt;Married Life&lt;/i&gt; (Sony Pictures Classics), coming in at #5.  Rounding out the top five was the Oscar-winner for Best Foreign-Language Film, &lt;i&gt;The Counterfeiters&lt;/i&gt; (Sony Pictures Classics).

Also of note was #7 finisher &lt;i&gt;Miss Pettigrew Lives For a Day&lt;/i&gt; (Focus Features), which was the weekend&amp;#39;s highest-averaging release playing on more than 500 screens.  Mostly middling reviews couldn&amp;#39;t scare away crowds who were no doubt jonesing for more Amy Adams cuteness in a slightly more adult context.  Meanwhile, &lt;i&gt;The Duchess of Langeais&lt;/i&gt; fell to #9 (sigh) and longtime list mainstays &lt;i&gt;The Band&amp;#39;s Visit&lt;/i&gt; (Sony) and &lt;a href="http://www.nervepop.com/filmlounge/review/inbruges"&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;i&gt;In Bruges&lt;/i&gt; (Focus) dropped off entirely.

Finally, I feel like I ought to mention this week&amp;#39;s #10 film by a nose, the documentary &lt;i&gt;Fighting For Life&lt;/i&gt;.  I mention it not because I&amp;#39;ve seen it or even because I&amp;#39;ve heard anything about it, but because its distributor (Truly Indie) would no doubt like me to believe it&amp;#39;s the only movie that truly belongs on this list, much like this week&amp;#39;s #8 film would like to remind me that girls do indeed rock.

Currently in its second week of release, &lt;i&gt;The Counterfeiters&lt;/i&gt; tops this week&amp;#39;s Indie Box-Office Roundup with in an average of $10,295 per screen in 18 venues, following a strong second-place finish in its opening weekend.

The weekend&amp;#39;s top new release was Ramin Bahrani&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;Chop Shop&lt;/i&gt; (Koch Lorber), bringing in $8,745 on a single screen, followed by last week&amp;#39;s champ, Jacques Rivette&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;The Duchess of Langeais&lt;/i&gt;, which kept on rockin&amp;#39; at $7,059 per screen after expanding its release to three locations. Also of note was the release of &lt;i&gt;Chicago 10&lt;/i&gt; (Roadside Attractions), the highest-ranking documentary of the weekend at #6.  And let&amp;#39;s not overlook the Oscar bump for Best Picture winner &lt;i&gt;No Country for Old Men&lt;/i&gt;, which found its way back into the top 10 after a nearly three-month absence following an expansion to more than 2,000 screens. The Israeli comedy, released in the US by Sony Pictures Classics, managed an impressive per-screen average of $11,267, up from $9,642 last week.  At a time when the big Hollywood releases are opening big and falling fast, it&amp;#39;s good to see a movie that really catches on with audiences like this.  A movie like &lt;i&gt;The Band&amp;#39;s Visit&lt;/i&gt; may never pull in &lt;i&gt;Cloverfield&lt;/i&gt; grosses, but in its limited release it should have more staying power than most would-be blockbusters.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Also maintaining a strong showing over President&amp;#39;s Day Weekend was last week&amp;#39;s chart-topper, Focus Features&amp;#39; &lt;i&gt;In Bruges&lt;/i&gt;, now at #2 with a $10,420 per-screen average in its second week of release.  Martin McDonough&amp;#39;s film is still expanding its release, so expect the averages to dip somewhat in the following weeks.

The weekend&amp;#39;s top premiere was &lt;i&gt;George A. Romero&amp;#39;s Diary of the Dead&lt;/i&gt;, the inaugural release from Weinstein Company&lt;/font&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt; offshoot Third Rail Releasing.  Romero&amp;#39;s film, his fifth &lt;i&gt;Dead&lt;/i&gt; movie to date, garnered a solid $6,549 per screen, and will expand to 10 more markets for the weekend of February 29.

Rounding out the top 5 were Cao Hamburger&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;The Year My Parents Went on Vacation&lt;/i&gt; (City Lights) and the self-distributed&lt;i&gt; David and Layla&lt;/i&gt;.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;
Also of note was Magnolia&amp;#39;s program of 2007 Oscar-nominated Short Films, which finished #9 on the list.&amp;nbsp; However, I find their figures more than a bit dubious, considering I had to pay separate admissions for the &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/02/19/oscar-shorts-part-2-best-animated-short-film.aspx"&gt;Animated&lt;/a&gt; and &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/02/18/oscar-shorts-part-1-best-live-action-short-film.aspx"&gt;Live-Action&lt;/a&gt; programs.

Finally, &lt;i&gt;Juno&lt;/i&gt;-watch!&amp;nbsp; The movie that &lt;a href="http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071220/COMMENTARY/176124809"&gt;Roger Ebert called &amp;quot;his true love&amp;quot;&lt;/a&gt; finished just outside the top 10 this week, raking in $2,993 per screen, finishing ahead of last week&amp;#39;s top wide-ish release, &lt;i&gt;There Will Be Blood&lt;/i&gt;. &lt;font size="2"&gt;Next week could see a bump in a number of current limited releases, depending on how the Oscars pan out. So hopefully we&amp;#39;ll get a nice surge for PT Anderson, not so much for Diablo Cody and Ivan Reitman&amp;#39;s kid.&amp;nbsp; &lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;

After all, most of the movies that top the weekend standings are mediocre at best, and it gets downright depressing when you consider how many shell out their hard-earned wages for &lt;i&gt;Meet the Spartans&lt;/i&gt;. Besides, the movies with the highest grosses usually play on upwards of 3,000 screens, so of COURSE they rake in the dough. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Better, I think, to use the yardstick of per-screen averages. Not only does this weed out the overhyped junk that’s playing to 25%-full houses in every mall multiplex from Schenectady to Sheboygan, but it allows some more interesting and esoteric fare to enjoy some time in the sun. And you all know how Screengrab is about esoteric fare. So, we&amp;#39;ve decided to bring back a feature from back in the day- &lt;a href="http://www.nervepop.com/nerveblog/screengrabblog.aspx?id=107e4782#4782"&gt;The Indie Box-Office Charts&lt;/a&gt;. Then we decided to throw in the word &amp;quot;Roundup&amp;quot; after it was suddenly dropped from its regular Trailer Roundup gig. We felt so terrible seeing ol&amp;#39;Roundup moping around on the sidewalk in front of Screengrab Tower that we had to find it a job again, to keep it out of trouble and the like. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Moving on... this week’s per-screen winner was Focus Features’ &lt;a href="http://www.nervepop.com/filmlounge/review/inbruges/"&gt;&lt;i&gt;In Bruges&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, the debut feature from Martin McDonough starring Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, and Ralph Fiennes. While we’re happy that the talented McDonough (to say nothing of Screengrab favorite Gleeson) looks to have an arthouse hit on his hands, much of the film’s draw comes from the name cast. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Of greater interest are the films that reside just below it on the list. Both #2 film &lt;i&gt;The Band&amp;#39;s Visit&lt;/i&gt; and #4 film &lt;a href="http://www.nervepop.com/filmlounge/review/4Months3Weeks2Days/index.aspx"&gt;&lt;i&gt;4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt; were unceremoniously snubbed by the Academy’s Foreign Language Film branch (albeit for different reasons), but it would appear that the controversies have only helped their grosses. &lt;i&gt;4 Months&lt;/i&gt; is a particularly interesting case- last year’s Palme d’Or winner, Cristian Mungiu’s film has also been released on IFC’s On Demand network, so who knows how much better it would be grossing if the big screen was the only option. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Rounding out the top 5 are a pair of single-screen releases: Pere Portabella’s &lt;i&gt;The Silence Before Bach&lt;/i&gt; and Jia Zhang-ke’s 2006 Venice winner &lt;i&gt;Still Life&lt;/i&gt;. The most widely-released film in the top 10 is &lt;a href="http://www.nervepop.com/filmlounge/review/Persepolis/index.aspx"&gt;&lt;i&gt;Persepolis&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, currently playing on 125 screens. The wide (1,000+ screens) release with the highest average gross is &lt;a href="http://www.nervepop.com/filmlounge/review/ThereWillBeBlood/index.aspx"&gt;&lt;i&gt;There Will Be Blood&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, which is currently sitting at #13, pulling in $2,456 per screen on 1620 screens. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;u&gt;Top 10, Weekend of February 8-10:&lt;/u&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. A poignant story of an Egyptian police band lost in Israel, the film has won a host of awards worldwide. That the film has done well internationally is fitting, since for all its apparent evocation of local politics, its themes are existential — can we connect with other people, or even with our own pasts? &lt;em&gt;The Band&amp;#39;s Visit&lt;/em&gt; makes the political personal, capturing perfectly the homesickness that can strike even when you&amp;#39;re still at home. And if I&amp;#39;m making it sound grim, it&amp;#39;s also got some great jokes. When I reached Kolirin on the phone last week, he sounded weary and lonely, stranded in the middle of a two-week press tour — probably the perfect position from which to promote this wry, bittersweet film. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;What was your initial inspiration for this film? &lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It began with an image of the main character, of Tewfiq, a man in uniform who sings an Arabic song. [Then] part of what you do is to research within yourself why this story interests you. It has my own private nostalgia for Egyptian cinema — part of my lost youth or childhood. I share this incomplete feeling that all of the characters share, a feeling of living beside life and not really touching. A movie is a kind of mirror of your own self. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;The central relationship between Tewfiq, the reserved bandleader, and Dina, the woman who takes him in, feels very real. How did you develop it? &lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;No big secret to this. Some of it was developed while working with the actors. Sometimes in a good cast you get this kind of magic, and at least as far as I&amp;#39;m concerned, between Sasson Gabai and Ronit Elkabetz, this is what happened. During the rehearsals we rewrote the scenes. For example, the whole scene of them on the park bench was written through rehearsal. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;That relationship encapsulates the whole subtext of the film—the question of whether it&amp;#39;s possible to connect with another person. Even though it&amp;#39;s about people from different cultures and different languages, there&amp;#39;s a universal quality to that struggle. &lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I never thought I had these characters who are very different and this movie kind of brings them together — not at all, not for a second. It&amp;#39;s the very starting point, I never doubted it: they&amp;#39;re all the same. And this is why sometimes when people describe the movie as different cultures coming together. . . I never thought about it this way. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;As you show in some of the family scenes, it&amp;#39;s perfectly possible to feel lonely and isolated even within your own family — never mind different cultures. &lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Yeah. I kind of have this thing with loneliness. [&lt;em&gt;laughs&lt;/em&gt;] &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/02/08-15/erankolirinheadshot.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/02/08-15/erankolirinheadshot.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;What are some of your favorite films? &lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mike Leigh&amp;#39;s &lt;em&gt;High Hopes&lt;/em&gt;. &lt;em&gt;Down by Law &lt;/em&gt;by Jarmusch. I like very much Jean-Claude Brisseau, &lt;em&gt;Sound and Fury&lt;/em&gt;. With this movie, I was thinking also of Jacques Tati and Aki Kaurismaki, and I guess there are a lot of others — I like Wenders a lot, I like Bresson and I like Ozu. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;There&amp;#39;s a very sharp sense of place in this movie. This outpost town, Bet Hatikva, feels very real. &lt;/strong&gt;I have very strong childhood memories from those places. Since I have asthma, they sometimes would take me to small towns — not where we shot, but towns not far away from there — what they would call in Israel development towns. And I have memories of these concrete buildings — this kind of monumental communist architecture in the desert, and this feeling of distance and emptiness. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I tried to shoot it more like I remembered it than the way it is. It took me a lot of time to understand how to get this feeling. I realized that what makes a difference is the sound of those places. Sometimes in the desert the wind blows in your ears and you go deaf for a second. We tried to somehow capture this feeling in the whole sound of the movie. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;If you just told somebody you were making a film about Arabs lost in Israel, they might expect an obvious political statement, which this film isn&amp;#39;t. &lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I know those expectations. In some ways it&amp;#39;s kind of a colonialist approach. You&amp;#39;re expected to be in this theater play they wrote. And you know, I live in the Middle East, and I&amp;#39;m aware of the politics. This is a political movie as far as I&amp;#39;m concerned. There are questions of culture, there are questions of the connection of Israel to the region, and how it&amp;#39;s lost its connection through the process of capitalization and modernization. There&amp;#39;s a very specific connection between the Israeli side and the Egyptian side in the movie. They share this same feeling of loss, nostalgia. If you listen close enough and you&amp;#39;re acquainted with the cultural conflicts of the region, you would see the movie raises a lot of political questions. Not just the obvious ones about the conflict — I&amp;#39;m not saying those questions are not important, but it doesn&amp;#39;t have the character saying, you know, &amp;quot;My brother was killed in the war,&amp;quot; and then everyone can sleep comfortably in their beds having been reassured about what it was all about. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;How has the film been received in Israel and Egypt? &lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Unfortunately, it cannot be shown in Egypt, formally anyway, but I&amp;#39;ve been reading quite a lot of articles from the Arab world about the movie, and I&amp;#39;ve gotten some good reactions. It&amp;#39;s been reviewed quite well in Israel, and again, the nuances, they differ from place to place, but at the end of the day, the proportion of people loving it and not loving it is about the same all over. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Israel couldn&amp;#39;t submit this film for an Oscar, because over half of it is in English. Were you disappointed? &lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I would like to say thank God, because without the Academy Award I&amp;#39;ve been flying all over the States for two weeks now and I miss home. If I had been a nominee, they would take me here for two months. Part of this is attributable to the Motion Picture Academy’s usual lack of standards, but a lot of it can be credited to the Byzantine rules governing what films can even be considered for the Foreign Film Oscar.
