Seven of her features will be shown, including her last movie, the 1996 version of Felix Lope de Vega&amp;#39;s &lt;em&gt;The Dog in the Manger&lt;/em&gt;. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;BERKELEY:&lt;/strong&gt; The Pacific Film Archives&amp;#39; &lt;a href="http://www.bampfa.berkeley.edu/filmseries/bergman07"&gt;Ingmar Bergman: Light and Shadow&lt;/a&gt; (December 6 - 20) gives admirers of the late director, whose death last summer was one of the supreme, sad film events of the year, to remember some of his proudest achievements (including &lt;em&gt;Persona&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;The Seventh Seal&lt;/em&gt;, and &lt;em&gt;Shame&lt;/em&gt;) in handsome prints on the big screen. The series kicks off with &lt;i&gt;Xala&lt;/i&gt;, the 1974 satire that climaxes with a memorably ghastly, well, &lt;i&gt;spitting&lt;/i&gt; scene, and includes the early works that put Sembene on the map (&lt;i&gt;Black Girl&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Emitai&lt;/i&gt;) as well as the more recent films (&lt;i&gt;Faat-Kine&lt;/i&gt; and his last movie, &lt;i&gt;Moolaade&lt;/i&gt;) that showed that he was still in strapping form. This is a rare chance not just to pay tribute to a fallen master but to catch up with the work of a major filmmaker who remains sorely underrepresented on DVD. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Pier Paolo Pasolini has been dead for a good long time now, but doesn&amp;#39;t seem to have become much less controversial, an accomplishment that might have put a smile on his face. The Film Society of Lincoln Center&amp;#39;s &lt;a href="http://www.filmlinc.com/wrt/onsale.pasolini.html"&gt;Heretical Epiphanies: The Cinematic Pilgrimages of Pier Paolo Pasolini&lt;/a&gt; (November 28 – December 4) covers his career from the neo-realist debut film &lt;i&gt;Accattone&lt;/i&gt; to the hyper-scandalous, posthumously released &lt;i&gt;Salo&lt;/i&gt;. On December 4, Lincoln Center also presents &lt;a href="http://www.filmlinc.com/wrt/onsale/pasolinihomage.html"&gt;the U.S. premiere of &lt;i&gt;Accattone in Jazz&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, a live presentation in which &amp;quot;Pasolini&amp;#39;s celebrated screenplay for &lt;i&gt;Accattone&lt;/i&gt; is revisited by Italian movie star Valerio Mastandrea, as he weaves a unique interplay of words and music together with Italian jazz legends and longtime collaborators Roberto Gatto and Danilo Rea.&amp;quot; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Brooklyn Academy of Music&amp;#39;s &lt;a href="http://www.bam.org/film/series.aspx?id=165"&gt;twelve-film Max Ophuls retrospective&lt;/a&gt; begins on November 28 with a week-long run of a new print of the 1948 &lt;i&gt;Letter from an Unknown Woman&lt;/i&gt;, the best work done in Hollywood by an artist who got too few opportunities to work at anything like his full capacities. It ain&amp;#39;t &lt;i&gt;The Earrings of Madame de. . . &lt;/i&gt;, but boy, will it do. . . &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;SAN FRANCISCO:&lt;/strong&gt; From November 27-30, &lt;a href="http://www.thecastrotheatre.com/p-list.html#ashby"&gt;the Castro salutes director Hal Ashby&lt;/a&gt;, with three nights of double features, starting with the 1979 &lt;i&gt;Being There&lt;/i&gt;, paired with the cult classic &lt;i&gt;Harold and Maude&lt;/i&gt;. On November 21, you can spend Thanksgiving Eve, appropriately enough, sinking deep into the epic family drama &lt;i&gt;Fanny and Alexander&lt;/i&gt;. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;BOSTON:&lt;/strong&gt; From November 23 through December 6, the Brattle hosts &lt;a href="http://www.brattlefilm.org/brattlefilm/series/2007/watching_the_detectives.html"&gt;Watching the Detectives&lt;/a&gt;, described as a chance &amp;quot;to fully explore the lighter or more colorful film that also feature some of the world&amp;#39;s greatest detectives.&amp;quot; I&amp;#39;m not sure what&amp;#39;s so light about &lt;i&gt;Klute&lt;/i&gt;, and &amp;quot;colorful&amp;quot; isn&amp;#39;t the first word it brings to mind either, but part of the charm of the program is its random-mix quality. Early in his foreshortened career as a film director, Albert Lamorisse made two of the most enduringly beautiful &amp;quot;children&amp;#39;s movies&amp;quot; in the pantheon: the 1956 Oscar-winning, thirty-two-minute &lt;i&gt;The Red Balloon&lt;/i&gt;, co-starring the title character and the director&amp;#39;s six-year-old son Pascal, and the 1952, forty-minute &lt;i&gt;White Mane&lt;/i&gt;. Film Forum is showing &lt;a href="http://www.filmforum.org/films/redballoon.html"&gt;both as a single program&lt;/a&gt; for ten days from November 16-25. Lamorisse, who was born in Paris in 1922 and who was killed in a 1970 helicopter crash while shooting footage for a documentary, had developed a fine eye working as a photographer before making his first moving pictures. (He is fondly remembered in another department of geekdom as the creator of the board game &amp;quot;La Conquette Du Monde&amp;quot;, which Parker Brothers would eventually market in the United States under the name &amp;quot;Risk&amp;quot;.) His eye for beauty and fanciful poetic imagination proved to be perfectly scaled to these short works, which in their bittersweet way are basically perfect. Seen back-to-back, they&amp;#39;re almost as ideal a start to the holiday season as getting crushed to death by a stampede of customers when the mall doors open the day after Thanksgiving. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There may also be an eye-popping children-of-all-ages feel to some of the pictures stocked in the Museum of the Moving Image program, &lt;a href="http://www.movingimage.us/site/screenings/pages/index_glorious_technicolor.html"&gt;Glorious Technicolor!&lt;/a&gt; (November 17 - December 2). The schedule includes a restored print of the gob-smackingly great-looking outdoor melodrama &lt;i&gt;Trail of the Lonesome Pine&lt;/i&gt;, as well as &lt;i&gt;The Adventues of Robin Hood&lt;/i&gt; with Errol Flynn strutting his stuff in leafy-green tights and classic musicals as &lt;em&gt;Singin&amp;#39; in the Rain&lt;/em&gt;,&lt;em&gt; The Wizard of Oz&lt;/em&gt;,&lt;em&gt; The Band Wagon&lt;/em&gt;, and one of Busby Berkeley&amp;#39;s all-time &amp;quot;can you get me some of what the choreographer&amp;#39;s been smoking?&amp;quot; eye-poppers, &lt;i&gt;The Gang&amp;#39;s All Here&lt;/i&gt;. Plus a little something called &lt;i&gt;Gone with the Wind&lt;/i&gt; and, on December 2, that yuletide perennial &lt;i&gt;Apocalypse Now Redux.&lt;/i&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Before there was such a thing as &amp;quot;independent film&amp;quot;, there was the mildly condescendingly named &amp;quot;regional-film movement,&amp;quot; a system by which people who lacked the wherewithal or the desire to relocate to New York or Los Angeles made movies wherever they were whenever they could scrape the money together, tried to get them shown at festivals, sometimes succeeded, and then, as often as not, were never heard from again. The Texas-based writer-director Eagle Pennell had his moment right on the cusp of the new dawn of independent-film distribution. In fact, he&amp;#39;s partly, if indirectly responsible for it, since it&amp;#39;s been reported that it was Pennell&amp;#39;s first feature, the 1978 &lt;i&gt;The Whole Shootin&amp;#39; Match&lt;/i&gt;, that inspired Robert Redford to found the Sundance Film Festival, just to see if maybe there was anything else like that being made in the wide open spaces between the two coasts. Pennell&amp;#39;s second feature, &lt;i&gt;Last Night at the Alamo&lt;/i&gt; attracted even more attention in 1984, but by the time Sundance was turning &amp;quot;independent&amp;quot; directors into cult superstars on their way to being industry players, Pennell was yesterday&amp;#39;s news, as well as an increasingly hopeless alcoholic on his way to being homeless. (He died in 2002, eight days before what would have been his fiftieth birthday.) From November 16-21, the Film Society of Lincoln Center is &lt;a href="http://www.filmlinc.com/wrt/onsale/wholeshootinmatch.hlml"&gt;bringing back &lt;i&gt;The Whole Shootin&amp;#39; Match&lt;/i&gt; in a restored print&lt;/a&gt;. It&amp;#39;s a chance to pay tribute to a lost pioneer and also to see what the part of America that&amp;#39;s outside Hollywood — specifically, the highly distinctive part that was Austin, Texas — looked like thirty years ago. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;CHICAGO:&lt;/strong&gt; From November 17 through December 4, the Gene Siskel Film Center pays tribute to the neo-Bresson stylings of Portuguese director Pedro Costa, an avant-garde narrative minimalist renowned for the painterly beauty of his compositional sense. &lt;a href="http://www.artic.edu/webspaces/siskelfilmcenter/2007/november/1.html"&gt;The program&lt;/a&gt; begins with his early 1989 feature &lt;i&gt;The Blood (O Sangue)&lt;/i&gt; and includes his recent, highly acclaimed &lt;i&gt;Colossal Youth&lt;/i&gt;. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;BOSTON:&lt;/strong&gt; Now that Ben Affleck, of all people, seems to have gotten Boston better than half-right in the firmly rooted thriller &lt;i&gt;Gone Baby Gone&lt;/i&gt;, it&amp;#39;s as good a time as any to look back on how Hollywood has done by Beantown. &lt;a href="http://www.brattlefilm.org/brattlefilm/series/2007/boston_filmed.html"&gt;Boston Filmed&lt;/a&gt; (November 16-22) at the Brattle devotes a week to such diverse on-location entertainments as the original &lt;i&gt;The Thomas Crown Affair&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Love Story&lt;/i&gt;, up to the more recent &lt;i&gt;Mystic River&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;The Departed&lt;/i&gt;, as well as two indies from director Brad Anderson, the romantic comedy and ode-to-postponed-gratification &lt;i&gt;Next Stop, Wonderland&lt;/i&gt; and the minimalist mind-fuck horror story &lt;i&gt;Session 9&lt;/i&gt;. Buried deep in the mix, towards the middle of next week, are some obscure, modest, not-available-on-DVD gems: the 1977 &lt;i&gt;Between the Lines&lt;/i&gt;, Joyce Micklin Silver&amp;#39;s likable little comedy about the death of the counterculture as seen from the offices of an underground newspaper, and the 1973 crime drama &lt;i&gt;The Friends of Eddie Coyle &lt;/i&gt;,with a cast that includes Robert Mitchum, Peter Boyle, Richard Jordan, Alex Rocco and Steven Keats all having the time of their lives rolling George V. Higgins&amp;#39;s dialogue around on their tongues. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;SAN FRANCISCO:&lt;/strong&gt; This weekend, the Castro proudly presents a bunch of movies I&amp;#39;ve never heard of as part of the &lt;a href="http://www.thecastrotheatre.com/p-list.html#thirdi"&gt;Fifth Annual Third I Film Festival&lt;/a&gt;, promoting South Asian cinema &amp;quot;art-house classics to experimental visions to next-level Bollywood.&amp;quot; I&amp;#39;m going to be honest here. With everything else that&amp;#39;s going on in the world, even just the world of film, it&amp;#39;s not going to be possible for even an authority so utterly devoid of a life as The Rep Report to be up on all of it until my cloning experiments bear fruit, and though I never made anything like a conscious decision about it, it seems that experimental South Asian movies and next-level Bollywood are my major field of personal ignorance. As visually graceful as it is inventive, playfully witty, with actual if improbable characters pushing the plot forward, it remains an especially flavorful example of what used to be called &amp;quot;an exercise in pure style&amp;quot; from back before easy access to computer imagery and MTV syntax resulted in an explosion of would-be prodigies turning out movies that really &lt;em&gt;are&lt;/em&gt; exercises in pure style. The new print is reported to also boast some new, improved subtitles. (The first time I saw the movie, on cable TV on my fifteenth birthday — I rode my brontosaurus to the house of my friend who had HBO — a single half-assed glitch in the subtitles served to completely screw up the plot.) If you haven&amp;#39;t seen it before, nothing else you have seen can fully prepare you for it; Beinex himself has spent the last quarter century failing to follow it up. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;October 30 would have been&amp;nbsp;Louis Malle&amp;#39;s seventy-fifth birthday, which makes this a good time to check out what may be his happiest masterpiece, the autobiographical 1971 comedy &lt;i&gt;Murmur of the Heart.&lt;/i&gt; (I do not mean to suggest that there might ever be a bad time to check it out.) &lt;a class="" href="http://www.filmlinc.com/wrt/yff/yffmurmur_heart.html"&gt;The Film Society of Lincoln Center will be showing it on November 1&lt;/a&gt; as part of their &amp;quot;Young Friends of Film&amp;quot; program.&amp;nbsp;Andre Gregory, who worked with Malle on two of his finest American films, &lt;i&gt;My Dinner with Andre&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Vanya on 42nd Street&lt;/i&gt;, will be on hand to introduce the film. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;BERKELEY:&lt;/strong&gt; Romanian cinema, believe it or not, is hot right now and getting hotter, so Pacific Film Archives is offering a handy primer in the form of &lt;a class="" href="http://www.bampfa.berkeley.edu/filmseries/romaniancinema"&gt;Revolutions in Romanian Cinema&lt;/a&gt; (November 3 - December 9).&amp;nbsp;The country produces fewer feature films than any other European country — half a dozen a year — but as Spencer Tracy used to say, what&amp;#39;s there is choice. Plus five other feature films and a program of shorts. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Pacific Film Archive also hosts &lt;a class="" href="http://www.bampfa.berkeley.edu/filmseries/passionofpasolini"&gt;The Passion of Pasolini&lt;/a&gt; (November 1 - December 7), dedicated to the work of the still-controversial Italian novelist, poet, and filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini. The series, which includes his adaptations of &lt;i&gt;The Decameron, Arabian Nights, The Canterbury Tales&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;The Gospel According to St. Matthew&lt;/i&gt; opens with his 1961 debut feature &lt;i&gt;Accattone&lt;/i&gt;; it closes with his scandalous last film, the 1975 &lt;i&gt;Salo.&lt;/i&gt; Just keep&amp;nbsp;telling yourself: it&amp;#39;s only chocolate, it&amp;#39;s only chocolate. . .&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;WASHINGTON, D.C.:&lt;/strong&gt; The twentieth annual &lt;a class="" href="http://www.afi.com/silver/new/nowplaying/2007/v4i6/eu.aspx"&gt;2007 European Union Film Showcase&lt;/a&gt; opens November 1 and runs through November 20th at the AFI Silver Theater, showcasing a wide selection of new and recent films from across the continent. The opening night selection is &lt;i&gt;Christopher Columbus: The Enigma&lt;/i&gt;, the latest by the startlingly prolific Portuguese director Manoel de Oliveira. The director, who will be in attendance, turns ninety-nine on December 12. This is a diverse series as evidenced by the two films I was able to catch — Wong Kar-Wai’s criminally underseen &lt;i style="mso-bidi-font-style:normal;"&gt;Happy Together &lt;/i&gt;and Andrew Lau and Alan Mak’s &lt;i style="mso-bidi-font-style:normal;"&gt;Confession of Pain.&lt;/i&gt; Both feature Tony Leung in a lead role but are otherwise polar opposites. &lt;/font&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;i style="mso-bidi-font-style:normal;"&gt;&lt;span style="FONT-FAMILY:Arial;"&gt;&lt;font face="arial,helvetica,sans-serif"&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font face="arial,helvetica,sans-serif"&gt;&lt;i style="mso-bidi-font-style:normal;"&gt;&lt;span style="FONT-FAMILY:Arial;"&gt;Happy Together&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;span style="FONT-FAMILY:Arial;"&gt; is an exploration of the dissolving relationship between two gay Chinese men who came to Buenos Aries as vacationers and now find themselves stranded without enough money to return home.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun:yes;"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;The film is more raw and intimate than any of the master director’s other work, but explores similar themes of loneliness, displacement and the inability to find happiness.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun:yes;"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;Christopher Doyle’s incredible camera work switches from black and white to pastels to faded color, and creates a sense of stylized reality that is not only beautiful but helps propel the film’s story with its immediacy.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun:yes;"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;Throwing traditional narrative structure out the window, this film is unflinching in its honesty and craftsmanship.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font face="arial,helvetica,sans-serif"&gt;&lt;i style="mso-bidi-font-style:normal;"&gt;&lt;span style="FONT-FAMILY:Arial;"&gt;Confession of Pain&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;span style="FONT-FAMILY:Arial;"&gt; is an ultra-modern, big-budget thriller from the same creative team behind &lt;i style="mso-bidi-font-style:normal;"&gt;Infernal Affairs&lt;/i&gt;, the film from which &lt;i style="mso-bidi-font-style:normal;"&gt;The Departed&lt;/i&gt; was adapted.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun:yes;"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;This is popcorn fare, simply too glossy to ever feel authentic.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun:yes;"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;The story also goes through a predictable series of twists and turns.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun:yes;"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;But where the audience for &lt;i style="mso-bidi-font-style:normal;"&gt;Happy Together&lt;/i&gt; is surely limited by both its subject matter and challenging presentation, &lt;i style="mso-bidi-font-style:normal;"&gt;Confession of Pain&lt;/i&gt; has a much broader appeal. While the Shaws concentrated on serving as Hong Kong&amp;#39;s cinematic candy counter, serving up the popular action melodramas that would shape Western notions of what Chinese movies are all about, Cathay prided itself on its prestige productions and sophisticated comedies and musicals that its chief executive saw as part of an effort to modernize Chinese society. Sadly, Loke Wan Tho died in a 1964 plane crash that also took the lives of several of his top executives, and Cathay never recovered from the loss. In its final week, the New York Film Festival is honoring the memory of the studio&amp;#39;s golden period with &lt;a class="" href="http://www.filmlinc.com/wrt/onsale/chinesemodern.html"&gt;Chinese Modern: A Tribute to Cathay Studios&lt;/a&gt;, running October 10 through the 16. &lt;/font&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;a class="" href="http://www.nysun.com/article/64204"&gt;Grady Hendrix writes&lt;/a&gt; that the program doubles as a tribute to Chathay&amp;#39;s great forgotten star, Grace Chang.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;She was the beneficiary of Cathay&amp;#39;s special interest in providing strong opportunities for actresses,&amp;nbsp;creating a new model of independent women for Chinese audiences. One film here, the 1957 &lt;em&gt;Mambo Girl&lt;/em&gt;, reportedly grew out of Loke Wan Tho&amp;#39;s seeing the actress dancing in a nightclub, and deciding that the sight was too good to not build a movie around.)
