In Guy Maddin&amp;#39;s nostalgia-drenched &lt;i&gt;The Saddest Music in the World&lt;/i&gt; (2003), a brash player in the contest to select the titular song promises to deliver &amp;quot;sadness with some sass and pizazz&amp;quot;, and that&amp;#39;s how the best early talking pictures responded to hard times, whether it took the form of mixing romance with wisecracks and slapstick (as in &lt;i&gt;My Man Godfrey&lt;/i&gt; and the Preston Sturges-scripted &lt;i&gt;Easy Living&lt;/i&gt;), hard-boiled tabloid melodrama (such as &lt;i&gt;Night Nurse&lt;/i&gt; with Barbara Stanwyck and &lt;i&gt;Three on a Match&lt;/i&gt; with a coke-crazed Ann Dvorak), and such varieties of escapism as the Mae West vehicle &lt;i&gt;I&amp;#39;m No Angel&lt;/i&gt; and the bug-eyed Busby Berkeley musical &lt;i&gt;Gold Diggers of 1933&lt;/i&gt;. Say hello to the bad guy with &lt;i&gt;Little Caesar&lt;/i&gt; and the original &lt;i&gt;Scarface&lt;/i&gt;; proclaim &lt;i&gt;Hallelujah, I&amp;#39;m a Bum&lt;/i&gt; with an exuberant Al Jolson, and show up every Tuesday to participate in the free drawings as Film Forum revives the Depression tradition of Bank Night. These movies are reminders of a time when Americans saw themselves as all being in the soup together and managed to shave enough off the hard-won grocery money to come out to see movies that addressed their problems, both personal and societal, with an insouciant, nose-thumbing attitude and a can-do spirit. Of course, those Americans never dreamed that their great-grandhildren would someday queue up to pay twelve dollars for a movie ticket.

Long a forgotten and even much-mocked figure, Micheaux has been unearthed in recent years as a pioneering African-American movie mogul and showman, a writer turned filmmaker who began his career with a film based on his own successful novel, &lt;i&gt;The Homesteader.&lt;/i&gt; &amp;quot;Unhappily,&amp;quot; the theater notes, &amp;quot;few of the films by Micheaux or his contemporaries—Spencer Williams, Richard Norman, Richard Maurice, William Alexander, and many others—have survived in pristine condition. The scratched, sometimes faded copies we’ll be showing are, for the moment, all that is available.&amp;quot; But the fact that watching some of these movies now is like seeing something freshly recovered from a tomb may only enhance the alternative-universe-eye view that is part of their incalcuable historical value. Mixed in are some of the earliest attempts by white Hollywood to utilize the talent of black performers, including King Vidor&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;Hallelujah&lt;/i&gt; and Vincente Minnelli&amp;#39;s endlessly enjoyable 1943 &lt;i&gt;Cabin in the Sky&lt;/i&gt;, a pedestal to the sky-high talent of such entertainers as Ethel Waters, Lena Horne, Louis Armstrong, and the peerless song and dance man John W. Now, almost three decades later, I’m so familiar with Kingsley’s onscreen persona (thanks to films like &lt;em&gt;Bugsy&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;Sexy Beast&lt;/em&gt; and &lt;em&gt;The Wackness&lt;/em&gt;) that it’s amazing to look back on &lt;em&gt;Gandhi&lt;/em&gt; and consider how deeply the British-Indian actor submerged himself into the role of this lawyer-turned-freedom fighter, spiritual leader and all-around Great Soul. Richard Attenborough’s production was an old school &lt;em&gt;event&lt;/em&gt;, featuring 300,000 extras (a Guiness World Record!) and racking up eight Academy Awards (including the trifecta of Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Director)&amp;nbsp;for its depiction of the life of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi from 1893 to 1948, through his early days as an activist for Indian rights in South Africa and his&amp;nbsp;leadership in the struggle for Indian independence from England to his ultimate martyrdom at the hands of a radical Hindu assassin. This kind of large canvas storytelling frequently collapses under the weight of pretension, slack pacing and scattered focus (see: &lt;em&gt;Australia&lt;/em&gt;), but Attenborough pulled off this cinematic monument with a clear-eyed discipline worthy of his extraordinary subject. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;THE PRIVATE LIFE OF HENRY VIII (1933) &amp;amp; REMBRANDT (1936) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

(You could be excused for not always being clear on that.) With &lt;em&gt;Henry VIII&lt;/em&gt;, a real warhorse of a classic early talkie, Laughton did as much as anyone to create the modern image of that much-married royal as a tantrummy spoiled child who did nothing but indulge his whims and send his clothes back to the tailor to be let out again, and he did it at such a generous comic pitch that he made the fellow seem lovable, even cuddly, like an Ewok with a weakness for having his ex-girlfriends beheaded. For a full taste of the big boy&amp;#39;s range, it ought to be sampled alongside the much quieter &lt;em&gt;Rembrandt&lt;/em&gt;, a surprisingly sensitive and engaging portrait of the Dutch master. For that cozy family feeling, both films feature charming appearances by the off-screen Mrs. Laughton, Elsa Lanchester, who was also the on-screen &lt;em&gt;Bride of Frankenstein&lt;/em&gt;. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;SWEET DREAMS (1985)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

Beverly D&amp;#39;Angelo walked off with the second act of &lt;em&gt;Coal Miner&amp;#39;s Daughter&lt;/em&gt; as the pampered, saucy Patsy who taught poor little country girl Loretta Lynn how to be a star, and this full-length treatment, centering on the married-folks love story between Jessica Lange&amp;#39;s Patsy and Ed Harris as Charlie Dick (one of those guys who was born to bathe in the light of a more exciting personality&amp;nbsp;generous enough to decree him worthy), is like great country music in motion. For girl talk, Lange has Ann Wedgeworth, supporting actress extraordinaire, as her mama.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;LUMUMBA (2001)&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

Lumumba was driven from office and assassinated two months into his term; when the movie was made, some forty years after the events it documents, the region was still such a political powder keg that locations had to be scouted far afield, and even after the film was released to theaters, a former American government advisor who felt that he&amp;#39;d been accused of being implicated in Lumumba&amp;#39;s death got HBO to bleep the mention of his name from the soundtrack before the movie was broadcast on cable TV. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;LUST FOR LIFE (1956) &amp;amp; VINCENT &amp;amp; THEO (1990)&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/8S1WN-hbhX4&amp;amp;hl=en&amp;amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344"&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In his tragically short life, Vincent Van Gogh was underappreciated, starved, mistreated, thought mad, and forced to go without his share of love and satisfaction, but he did get two pretty good movies made about him, and one of them inspired the title of an Iggy Pop song that somehow found its way into the ad campaign of Carnival Cruise Lines, so I guess it evens out. Directed by Vincente Minnelli and starring Kirk Douglas, with James Donald as Brother Theo and Anthony Quinn as Gauguin, &lt;em&gt;Lust For Life&lt;/em&gt; is in the dramatic MGM style and played to the hilt; a huge success in its day, it is clearly enough a product of its time that it may be a bit underrated today, but it remains a very moving experience crafted by intelligent, talented people at the height of their game. The latter film, which stars Tim Roth as a Van Gogh so ferociously in love with life and so passionately aware of how much of it he&amp;#39;s missing out on that he can seem open-hearted and embittered at the same moment, was directed by Robert Altman, and is very clearly the product of his sensibility alone. These three films, all made at Ophüls’ artistic and commercial peak, make a lovely introduction to the man’s work, with all the continental sophistication, exquisitely-wrought melodrama, and lavish production values that made his reputation. And stars? You bet- between the three films, you’ll find Jean Gabin, Simone Signoret, Anton Walbrook, Charles Boyer, Danielle Darrieux, and Simone Simon. If you can only shell out for one disc, go with &lt;i&gt;Earrings&lt;/i&gt;, whose DVD features not only scholarly commentary and a number of featurettes (including an interview with Paul Thomas Anderson, whose complex camera movements were clearly inspired by Ophüls’ work), but also a new printing of the source novel, Louise de Vilmorin’s &lt;i&gt;Madame De…&lt;/i&gt;. But really, they’re all worth your money. Now all we need is a Region 1 DVD of &lt;i&gt;Letter From an Unknown Woman&lt;/i&gt;…&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In addition, this week is a banner occasion for musical fans, led by a double dose of Oscar-winning Vincente Minnelli titles, &lt;i&gt;An American in Paris&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Gigi&lt;/i&gt; (both Warner), each presented in snazzy new Two-Disc Special Editions. There’s also Warner’s &lt;i&gt;The Busby Berkeley Collection Volume 2&lt;/i&gt;, which includes &lt;i&gt;Gold Diggers of 1937&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Gold Diggers in Paris&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Hollywood Hotel&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Variety Show&lt;/i&gt;. Cyd Charisse, nee&amp;#39; Tula Ellice Finklea, has died at 86. With legs on hinges and a face abd figure that, to steal a line from dance critic Raymond Chandler, were enough to make a bishop kick a rock through a stained glass window, Charisse was one of the most spectacular ornaments of Hollywood movie musicals in the 1940s and 1950s. Not the least of her achievements is that she was the performer who most conspicuously played a big role in the careers of both the twin titans of dancing movie stars, Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. As a young dancer, Tula Ellice joined the Ballets Russes when she was a teenager and married her dance instructor, Nico Charisse, in 1939. (The union would last eight years and produce a son, Nicky. Her second marriage, in 1948, to actor-singer Tony Martin, would last until her death, sixty years later.) She made her movie debut in the 1943 &lt;i&gt;Something to Shout About&lt;/i&gt;, but the real kick-start to her film career came when she first danced with Astaire, in a sequence shot in 1944 for inclusion two years later in the variety feature &lt;i&gt;Ziegfeld Follies.&lt;/i&gt; Almost ten years after their first encounter, she played the female lead in Astaire&amp;#39;s great 1953 comeback movie &lt;i&gt;The Band Wagon&lt;/i&gt;, where they danced together in two big numbers, &amp;quot;Dancing in the Dark&amp;quot; and the Mickey Spillane parody ballet &amp;quot;Girl Hunt.&amp;quot; They would later appear together in the 1957 &lt;i&gt;Silk Stockings&lt;/i&gt;. She also danced with Kelly in the big climactic number to &lt;i&gt;Singin&amp;#39; in the Rain&lt;/i&gt; (1952), and co-starred with him in &lt;i&gt;Brigadoon&lt;/i&gt; (1953), and &lt;i&gt;It&amp;#39;s Always Fair Weather.&lt;/i&gt;(1955). Of their collaborations, Astaire later wrote that when you danced with Charisse, &amp;quot;you stayed danced with.&amp;quot;

Charisse also appeared in such musicals as &lt;i&gt;The Harvey Girls&lt;/i&gt; with Judy Garland and &lt;i&gt;The Kissing Bandit&lt;/i&gt; with Frank Sinatra, and in the musical biopics &lt;i&gt;Words and Music&lt;/i&gt; (with Tom Drake and Mickey Rooney as Rodgers and Hart) and &lt;i&gt;Deep in My Heart&lt;/i&gt; (starring Jose Ferrer as Sig Romberg). She also took straight dramatic (i.e., non-dancing roles) in films ranging from Vincente Minnelli&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;Two Weeks in Another Town&lt;/i&gt; to the 1978 &lt;i&gt;Warlords of Atlantis&lt;/i&gt;, and after her retirement from movies, she sometimes turned up on such TV shows as &lt;i&gt;Fantasy Island, The Love Boat&lt;/i&gt;, and &lt;i&gt;Murder, She Wrote&lt;/i&gt;. When she &amp;quot;acted&amp;quot;, whether it was in the non-musical scenes of &lt;i&gt;The Band Wagon&lt;/i&gt; or her services to Jessica Fletcher, Charisse usually seemed not quite there, distracted, and occasionally out to lunch. Why, DVD buyers, of course!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;DVD of the Week:&lt;/b&gt; For sheer comprehensiveness, nothing can touch Warner’s 22-film, 5-box-set tribute to the one and only Frank Sinatra. For all of Sinatra’s success as a recording artist, he was also a talented actor, given the right role, and this week sees the release of a number of his finest films. Among these are his Oscar-nominated performance in Otto Preminger’s &lt;i&gt;The Man With the Golden Arm&lt;/i&gt; and Vincente Minnelli’s &lt;i&gt;Some Came Running&lt;/i&gt;, both of which are included in the &lt;i&gt;Frank Sinatra: The Golden Years&lt;/i&gt; box set. But if you prefer Sinatra the fresh-faced young crooner, check out &lt;i&gt;Frank Sinatra: The Early Years&lt;/i&gt;, which includes such early-career titles as &lt;i&gt;Step Lively&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;It Happened in Brooklyn&lt;/i&gt;, and &lt;i&gt;The Kissing Bandit&lt;/i&gt;. Or see Sinatra match his pipes with Gene Kelly’s nimble feet in &lt;i&gt;The Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly Collection&lt;/i&gt;, comprised of the classic musicals &lt;i&gt;On the Town&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Take Me Out to the Ballgame&lt;/i&gt;, and &lt;i&gt;Anchors Aweigh&lt;/i&gt;. Also of note in classics on DVD: &lt;i&gt;The Big Trail: Fox Grandeur Special Edition&lt;/i&gt;; the Godard double-feature of &lt;i&gt;La Chinoise&lt;/i&gt; (Kino) and &lt;i&gt;Le Gai Savoir&lt;/i&gt;; a new edition of Anthony Mann’s &lt;i&gt;Man of the West&lt;/i&gt; (Fox); &lt;i&gt;Saturday Night Live: The Complete Third Season&lt;/i&gt; (Universal); and the &lt;i&gt;Fox Western Classics Collection&lt;/i&gt;, which includes the new-to-DVD titles &lt;i&gt;Garden of Evil&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Rawhide&lt;/i&gt;, and &lt;i&gt;The Gunfighter&lt;/i&gt;. And in shameless cash-in news, this week brings new DVDs of all three &lt;i&gt;Indiana Jones&lt;/i&gt; films, with a few added extra features so that buyers won’t feel completely ripped off.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In more recent films, today brings the release of Francis Ford Coppola’s &lt;i&gt;Youth Without Youth&lt;/i&gt; (Sony, also Blu-Ray), his first official directorial effort in a decade. The film was generally regarded as a critical and popular disaster, but I found it fascinating- flawed to be sure, but intriguingly so- and I believe it’ll finally be appreciated for what it is on DVD.
