This week, in a Top Ten list

re: Ignominious Exits: The Top Ten Worst Final Films (Part One)

The same things (some) people are (still) saying about EWS is the same nonsense people said about BARRY LYNDON, which is probably Kubrick's masterpiece, in the 70s and 80s: too long, too boring, too many pauses between words, too not like what we were told it was gonna be (a TOM JONES-esque adventure in BL's case, explicit porn in EWS's), yadda yadda yadda.

I won't argue that EWS is a perfect film (for starters, it's a freaking rough cut, since its director, like, died months before finishing it) but to include it among the likes of PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE and CANNONBALL RUN 2 is just plain retarded.

She'd never seen it before, and kindly struggled to find nice things to say about it (knowing I'm a Kubrick nut).I on the other hand, having watched it with fresh eyes unclouded by sentimentality about Stan, was gutted. Yes, it does look great and has a wonderful, iridescent atmosphere: and yes one or two of the performances (Alan Cumming in particular) are memorable. But the script is absolutely atrocious, the meandering pace dissipates any tension, and the 'orgy' sequence is just fucking embarrassing, proper 'dirty old man with pretensions to art' stuff (Kubrick's tribute to Ken Russell perhaps?) I generally like Kidman as an actress a lot more than I do Cruise, but he's actually quite subtle and watchable in this movie, while she showboats like a fucking drag queen.

I don't think we'll be watching that one next Christmas. Gremlins on the other hand......
