I love "To Die For" (which is the movie that first made me think "Damn, River Phoenix's brother is pretty awesome) and "My Own Private Idaho--Keanu Reeves was actually good in it, go figure. I actually thought "Elephant" was kind of hackneyed and ham-handed. "Oooh look, they seem really perfect and popular but now they're *gasp* VOMITING UP THEIR LUNCHES! Who could have predicted that??" And I will join others here in defending "Good Will Hunting", which definitely had some cheesy moments but is still, I will argue, a great movie.

Finding Forrester on the other hand...

My Own Private Idaho is a piece of ridiculous self-indulgent crap. And at its Q&A at the NY Film Festival, Van Sant gave the distinct impression that he was a near retard.

And of course, Even Cowgirls get the Blues is one of the worst films ever made.

I actually dislike all Van Sant's films but it's worth pointing out that Hollywood is totally uninterested in artistic failure, only financial. Therefore it's unlikely that Good Will Hunting or even Finding Forrester hurt his career. Psycho on the other hand...

yeah, right. good will hunting was a hollywood slam-dunk that failed artistically. a film that had two then basically unknown actors, a famous comedian actor looking for just a little artistic credibility, and a score by a weird indie guy from la. that explains a film that should have died in obscurity grossing over 100 mil. i know this isn't always the case but some movies that make a lot of money make a lot of money because they are good and people like them.
