He pioneered a very specific breed of indie filmmaking before it even had a name, but his forays into mainstream cinema have alternated between clever successes

re: Take Five: Van Sant

I love "To Die For" (which is the movie that first made me think "Damn, River Phoenix's brother is pretty awesome) and "My Own Private Idaho--Keanu Reeves was actually good in it, go figure. I actually thought "Elephant" was kind of hackneyed and ham-handed. "Oooh look, they seem really perfect and popular but now they're *gasp* VOMITING UP THEIR LUNCHES! Who could have predicted that??" And I will join others here in defending "Good Will Hunting", which definitely had some cheesy moments but is still, I will argue, a great movie.

Finding Forrester on the other hand...

And of course, Even Cowgirls get the Blues is one of the worst films ever made.

Therefore it's unlikely that Good Will Hunting or even Finding Forrester hurt his career. Psycho on the other hand...

...man, i'm sorry for being an ass. i'm drunk. good article otherwise. dig van sant!
