For some reason Guy Pearce immediately occurred to me as Holmes. On reflection, I think it could work, but I dunno.

I disagree that "Guy Ritchie seems to have lost even the little creativity...ever since he married Madonna", though. Revolver was a self-indulgent fiasco, but it was also daring and interesting and challenging.

I think Ritchie is quite a talented craftsman/director, but too self-indulgent. Tackling someone else's material might provide him with the structure he needs to shine.

on the plus side this might finally offer vindication for watson. in the books he's this dashing war vet, quick with a pistol and always ready for a fight. yet nearly every film interpretation devolves him into a tubby red-faced buffoon. i'm thinking jason statham would be a nice fit, maybe bill nighy as the great detective?

What, is Sherlock going to have an Uzi? Is Watson going to be a gay hustler? Is Mrs. Hudson going to be played by Salma Hayak? I know, the Baker Street Irregulars will wear tennis shoes and say "fuck" a lot. Why do I have zero confidence in any of this? Is it because Guy Ritchie seems to have lost even the little creativity he demonstrated ripping off Quentin Tarantino ever since he married Madonna? If you can't think of any new ideas, dude, re-imagine something more on your level. I hear the rights to Gilligan's Island are still available.
