HBO Not Done Throwing Money At Stuff; This Time It's Pimps

Posted by Bryan Christian

Hey remember last week when we went through everything that we'd heard was getting developed over at HBO? Yeah, well, apparently that list was somewhat short on "bitchslapping." We should have known.

Yes, Albert and Allen Hughes -- AKA the guys who ruined From Hell -- have been hired to executive produce an hour-long drama for HBO about pimps.

Set in Oakland, Calif., Gentlemen of Leisure, which will be written by Rescue Me co-executive producer Evan Reilly, follows the world of prostitution through the eyes of a legendary pimp contemplating retirement.

It will explore the generational conflict of old-school pimps living by honor codes and creeds who are being pushed aside by violent upstarts.

Why, we're guessing The Wire got mentioned a lot in that pitch too!

Our only hope here is that HBO goes all out and proposes an Avengers-style crossover with all the other sex shows they're developing, pitting the pimps, the Manhattan call girl, the dude with the big pecker, and the Entourage gang against each other in a fuckfest to the death. We got twenty says Turtle outlasts Drama.

Lindy Parker has worked as a ghostwriter, editor, dance instructor and a purveyor of dreams, one beer at a time. She loves Charles Dickens and Gabriel Garcia Marquez and also, straight-to-video releases with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. It's possible she reads more teen fiction than she should. She hails from Los Angeles, her hometown and soul mate, but she lives in Brooklyn, the fling she'll never forget.

Olivia Purnell left Ohio for sunny Los Angeles; then found that she couldn’t ignore New York City’s call, and brought herself to Brooklyn where she has worked with GenArt, BlackBook, the School of American Ballet, and finished an M.A. in Creative Writing from N.Y.U. She loves one-liners with sting and hates the stench of the subway in the summer. That said, she can’t get enough of either.
