Who Should Star in the "Hawaii Five-O" Remake?

Posted by Ben Kallen

CBS has signed on to produce a new version of Hawaii Five-O, the island-based police drama that aired in the late '60s and '70s. The revamp will be headed by Criminal Minds producer Ed Bernero, and is likely to include more CSI-style procedural elements than the low-tech original.

Of course, the most important aspect of a remake like this is casting. So who should play the lead character of Chris McGarrett, son of Jack Lord's legendary detective Steve McGarrett? Click through to see our choice:

Yes, it's Sean Penn. Pretty much every middle-aged movie actor is taking the lead in a cop show these days, and Penn's no-nonsense look and intense style could make him perfect for the role. Besides, the ultra-serious actor can probably use some time in Hawaii, preferably near that beautiful beach from Lost.

Best of all, Penn played surfer-dude Jeff Spicoli in Fast Times at Ridgemont High... whose arch-nemesis, history teacher Mr. Hand, was obsessed with -- wait for it -- Hawaii Five-O. (Aloha, Mr. Hand!)

See how all that works? Cast him, Danno!

Lindy Parker has worked as a ghostwriter, editor, dance instructor and a purveyor of dreams, one beer at a time. She loves Charles Dickens and Gabriel Garcia Marquez and also, straight-to-video releases with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. It's possible she reads more teen fiction than she should. She hails from Los Angeles, her hometown and soul mate, but she lives in Brooklyn, the fling she'll never forget.

She loves one-liners with sting and hates the stench of the subway in the summer. That said, she can’t get enough of either.
