And no, it's not Dikembe Mutombo. But good guess...

It's Rick Fox. Really? Him? You mean the former role player on the Shaq/Kobe Lakers championship teams? Yeah. You mean Vanessa Williams' ex-husband? Yeah, him. You mean the guy who's never really made it as a leading man despite leading-man looks because, well, he ain't such a good actor? Him. Check it:

We don't know who that other lady is, but we do know Eliza Dushku is all up in Rick Fox's lap. And that's because they're an item - an item traveling with her mother.

Eliza Dushku and former Celtic Rick Fox, who've been spotted as a twosome over the past few months, left this morning for Uganda. The duo is on a trip organized by Dushku's mom, Judith, a government professor at Suffolk University. The Dushkus, Fox, and students in the elder Dushku's class about human trafficking in Uganda will spend 15 days touring the country and meeting with humanitarians and former soldiers...Also on the trip is Alicia Winn, executive director of the Boston Initiative to Advance Human Rights, and documentary maker Libby Spears, who will be filming the trip.

What? So you sign up for a Gov elective and you wind up traveling to Africa with Eliza Dushku and a 3-point shooting pretty boy? And then you're in a documentary? Where was this class when we were in college?

Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. are expecting their first child together, a source close to the couple confirms exclusively to PEOPLE. "They're very excited," says the source, adding that the actress, 31, is due in the fall. (People.com)

Congratulations SMG, really. Hard to believe you and your Buffy costars are all grown up and having babies. On another note, we're getting kind of psyched for your new show, The Wonderful Maladys, but does this mean you'll spend the pilot sitting at desks or standing behind kitchen counters?

TVGuide.com: What can you reveal about your episode of CSI? Who are you playing, what are you doing?
Charisma Carpenter: I play a slinky little character named Mink, who is a suspect in the murder of her boyfriend because there was a love triangle between her and another sexy little thing played by The L Word's Erin Daniels.

TVGuide.com: In the promos, it looks like there's some debate over whose boyfriend the deceased was.
Carpenter: Well, he was both of ours. So there was tension, because we were both vying for his affections and such. You know how competitive that can be. I mean, the three of them were even sharing a trailer!

TVGuide.com: "Sources" tell me there is a "panty party" in this episode. Is it like a Tupperware party?
Carpenter: [Laughs] No, not at all. It involves dancing around half-dressed in our little Winnebago.

IFC has greenlit its first telepic...Produced by Lionsgate and After Dark Films, "Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter" will focus on the street-savvy heroine as she deals with bloodsuckers and bad dates. (Variety)

So, it's Buffy with more sex and no Joss Whedon, right? We're skeptical about how good this series can possibly be. Also, the books are set in St. Louis, which has never really made our top ten list of sexy cities. We think we'll pull out our Buffy dvds and call it a day.

Buffy's New Siblings

HBO has announced who'll be joining Sarah Michelle Gellar on her new pilot The Wonderful Maladys, which we groaned about back in September, when it was announced. Back then Gellar's character was described as having "a kind of zealous immaturity, like a drug addict with a to-do list," by screenwriter Charles Randolph. This was not a good sign. Nor was the fact that, for over five months, we didn't hear jack about this show.

But the announcement of the rest of the cast gives us hope. Nate (younger brother of Rob) Corddry of The Daily Show, Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip, and United States of Tara will play Gellar's "bookish grad student" brother, and Molly Parker of Deadwood and Swingtown will play her older therapist sister. They all live in New York, and are dysfunctional. We can relate!

Sarah Michelle Gellar, Nate Corddry, and Molly Parker are a formidable trio. Maybe this show won't be so bad after all. Just hoping.

"Freaks and Geeks" Writers Bail on "90210"?

Now that the 90210 reboot has been picked up for a second season, it seems the CW is doing some housecleaning to try and get the show's chaotic writing under control....

Rebecca Rand Kirshner Sinclair has signed a seven-figure deal with CBS Paramount to serve as executive producer/showrunner on the high school drama remake for 2010-2011, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Sinclair joined as an executive producer in September and was to run the writers room, work alongside current executive producers/showrunners Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah, and serve as a consultant if the show was picked up for a second season.
Now that Sinclair will be taking charge, Sachs and Judah are likely to leave at the end of this season. (Yahoo TV)

We feel pretty good about this decision actually. We think the writing talent of the dynamic Sachs-Judah duo that brought us so much joy on Freaks and Geeks is better suited for a less high-profile show where they are given more free reign. Also, Rebecca Rand Kirshner Sinclair (we like to call her "Double RKS") worked on both Buffy and Gilmore Girls, so we have high hopes that she can turn this ship around.

We’re gonna take you back, waaaay back, before Willow was a lesbian, before Sarah Michelle Gellar got hot, back to Season 1 to when SMG was just a virgin in a half pony tail. She was just a cheerleader with a stake in hand and a vampire for a boyfriend.

We've never really been fans of Wilmer Valderramma. We're not denying that he was funny on That 70's Show, but something about his penchant for deflowering semi-talented teen songstresses and blabbing about it always gives him a slightly sleezy sheen in our eyes. All that to say, we're a little weirded out by the idea of Will V as a molder of young minds...

The series, "Earth to Pablo," revolves around a family who find themselves playing host to a teenage space alien instead of the South American exchange student they had expected.

Okay, so kind of like that Buffy episode where the foreign exchange student turned out to be a soul-sucking mummy from ancient Egypt -- execpt less creepy, more fun-for-the-whole-family.

Show of Hands: Who's Surprised to See a Vampire Pilot on The CW?

Answer: Nobody...

Not surprisingly, the box-office success of Twilight has led the CW to stake out some territory in the teens-and-vampires genre by picking up a pilot for Vampire Diaries, a Kevin Williamson-penned adaptation of a 15-year-old series of novels.
Similar to (and yet predating) Stephanie Meyer's Twilight, Vampire Diaries revolves around a young heroine who is the object of obsession of two brothers — both vampires, one good and one ... well, he's more complicated. The bloodsucking siblings fight for her soul, as well as dibs on other residents within their small town. (TV Guide)

Our List of Pro's and Con's:

Pro: Kevin Williamson! We loved us some Scream movies.

Con: Kevin Williamson. We hated us some Teaching Mrs. Tingle and also, nearly the entire fifth season of Dawson's Creek.

Pro: The Vampire Diaries plot involves two brothers, and we love nothing more than watching hot brothers wrecking havoc on the CW (see: Supernatural).

Con: Even though the VD books came out before Twilight saga, there's a danger that Twilight's supernova success will make copycatting too tempting for the TV incarnation to resist. There's a very real possibility we could end up with an episodic version of the Twilight movie (shudder) sans girl crush, Kristen Stewart (sigh).

Pro: The CW's history with supernatural plotlines: We [heart] Buffy 4 Ever.

Con: The CW's history with supernatural plotlines: We always hated Charmed.

Fox’s New Series “Bitches” is “Sex and The City” meets Teen Wolf

Picture this: Four chic New York City women perched on stylish rooftop barstools sipping cosmos or flirtinis or something else irritatingly pink. They’re wearing high fashion and chatting about their latest conquests, or deciding ‘he’s just not that into you’ when suddenly, the clouds pull back revealing a full moon . . .

And everything turns to shit. Instantaneously, manicures are replaced by claws. Brazilian wax-jobs are replaced by . . . something less Brazilian. And the girls go on a rampage.

This is what we’re imagining from the new dramedy Bitches in development at Fox. But, maybe we should reel in our cynicism and have a little more faith.

Fox is calling she-wolf story a “quirky urban fairy tale” and if the pilot gets the green light, it will be executive produced by Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts of Pushing Daisies. And you know how we loved Pushing Daisies.

Can the Daisies alum turn Bitches into magic as well? The premise is certainly . . . original. And the two have the experience to make something touching and inventive and mythic. Also, we loved Buffy the Vampire Slayer. And werewolves came to Sunnydale all the time (remember Oz?).

So maybe lady wolves in the city has a shot? We don’t know. What do you think?

“Dollhouse:” This Show Might Just Be Amazing!

Initially, we fell hard for Dollhouse. We have always adored the abstract idea of Joss Whedon’s new baby. A sci-fi vehicle for brainwashing/mind-control and an all-girl can of whoop-ass opened at will? It had us at hello. But, then, reports surfaced, reports of dissention in the ranks, troubs behind the scenes, scrapping the gosh-darn pilot, and the dreaded Friday time-slot. Our faith in the Eliza Dushku/Joss Whedon team has since been tested. Our love for them has been put through the fire. And although our love is strong as ever, our faith was shaken.

Now though, we’ve got reason to hope anew . . .

Jane Espenson, a consulting producer on Dollhouse and alumna of Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Battlestar Galactica says we shouldn’t worry:

“I think people are very confident now that everyone is on the same page with what the show is, how amazing it can be, and I think that a lot of this has been overblown . . . I think that people were concerned that the Firefly scenario would play out again. But, you know, I think that we're very confident of what the show is, and yeah, it's moving along so smoothly now.

I think it could very well appeal to not just Whedonites, but a much broader audience. I think it's extremely good, and the concept just blows me away” (io9.com)

OMG, Luke Perry is that you?

He looks good, no? As a pre-teen we adored him as the teenaged leather-jacket wearing perfectly coifed bad boy Dylan McKay. All pre-teens love that (see: all the recent Twilight twitterpation . . . Dylan was our generation’s hot vampire). And, while the years haven’t treated the 90210 franchise so well, Luke is lookin’ . . . . dare we say, decent.

In the spirit of full disclosure:
You may or may not know that we have an ongoing thing with/for Luke Perry. There was this semi-unfortunate chance encounter a couple of years ago in Los Angeles. We were wearing sweat-pants in public (regrettable, we know), he was eating brunch near us, we spoke . . . we hugged. But, nothing really went the way we would’ve liked it to.

Now when we see him . . .

(sigh)

We remember fondly the days of Dylan (again, who doesn’t love that wild cafeteria-desperado thing). We think briefly about the magnificent Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the ill-fated John From Cincinnati. And we plan in pre-teen detail what we’ll wear and how we’ll act when we see Luke again (oh, it’ll happen).

Until that fateful day, we’ll just have to soothe ourselves with the news that Luke is doing well. He’s got this new project on the horizon. He’ll starring in Uwe Boll’s The Storm. The Hollywood Reporter says:

In the apocalyptic thriller, [Lauren] Holly plays a dedicated wife and mother who must deal with the end of days scenario -- all heightened by the arrival of a mysterious stranger named Silas (Perry) who holds the key to the approaching doom. (thr.com)

We’re into it. And listen Luke, if you’re reading this and you need a date to the premiere, feel free to let us know. We clean up good. Real good.

Are We Really Ready for More Duff?

Yesterday we learned that Hilary Duff has some sort of a vague contractual relationship with NBC that will obligate us to see her on a regular basis via our television screens. This news brought up some old feelings for us . . .

Namely, irritation.

Homegirl recently released her second greatest hits compilation album entitled Best Of, after releasing her first greatest hits album, Most Wanted, in 2005. Doesn’t that seem extreme for someone with only 3 non-compilation albums to her credit?

That annoyed us a little bit. But, we (being the benevolent bloggers we are) will find it in our hearts to give her another chance. Especially since Ms. Duff will be getting back to her television roots (and perhaps her brunette roots as well; we like her in a darker hue) in the very near future. Variety.com says:

Under terms of the one-year talent and development deal, Peacock will develop a show starring Duff; thesp [sic] will also be tapped to guest star in various current NBC shows.

[. . .]

Duff will meet with writers and comb through the Peacock's development for the right project to star in.

Hmmm. Well as long as “the right project” doesn’t include a secret rockstar alter ego (å la Hannah Montana), a musical episode (å la Buffy the Vampire Slayer), or an after work karaoke bar (å la Ally McBeal), then we’re into this little television comeback.

And we look forward (sort of) to seeing Hilary guest spots across the network. One day she’ll be saving lives on ER. The next day she’ll be a guest spy on Chuck. Maybe they’ll even let her play a corpse on one of the Law & Orders! That’s a good one, cause there’s definitely no singing allowed.

At first, we were hopeful about our relationship with Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse. We’d look deeply into Eliza Dushku's eyes and think . . .

This could be good. We could be happy together. But now, we’re truly worried. Beginning in February, Fox will be plugging Dollhouse into it’s Friday night line up at 9pm, following the already flagging Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (we dig T:TSCC, but lets face it, the Connor gang’s viewership is not high). We are feeling a little upset about this new development. We are not alone; The Hollywood Reporter says:

The "Dollhouse" shift to Friday is certain to provoke a despondent cry from Whedon fans, especially after having watched "Firefly" wither away on the same night. Fox could have given the series a premiere behind "Idol" before shifting it to Fridays -- something the network has done a few times to boost sampling of new shows. And if that weren't unlucky enough, "Dollhouse" premieres on Friday the 13th?

Is there still hope despite the dreaded Friday time slot? Will we still tune in? Eliza, What do you think?

It’s not that we don’t love the idea of Dollhouse. A show created and written by Joss Whedon, starring the ass-kickingly hot Eliza Dushku, involving elements of mind control, Buffy-esque action, female heroics, and, um, personality replacement . . . What’s not to love? It’s just that the relationship (between us and Dollhouse) is so rocky. It’s so very on again off again . . .

One day we’re excited because Dollhouse has begun filming. Then the series is in trouble (boo!). But they refilm the pilot to make things easier to follow. And we’re feeling all jazzed and euphoric because we’re making progress, getting to a much better place in our relationship, you know? Where things are ‘easier’ between us. But just as we’re starting relax, news comes out that they’ve scrapped the original pilot. Scrapped. The. Pilot. What are we supposed to do now? What are we supposed to believe?

Joss Whedon says:

“They [Fox] bought something somewhat different than what I was selling them, which is not that uncommon in this business." Whedon says that he's still happy — happier, in fact! — with the way Dollhouse continues to take shape. (New York Magzine)

We’re supposed to feel happy? Please, Josh, we can’t be placated. We want Dollhouse and we want it now!

But with all these problems, we’re not sure we’ll ever get what we want. Let’s soothe ourselves with some more Dushku, shall we?

"Gossip Girl"/"90210" Crossover? We Say No

Rumors have been flying around for a bit about the CW doing a Gossip Girl/90210 crossover episode, and we've been sitting here feeling that it's a pretty bad idea.

In the first place, how would it work since the shows take place on opposite coasts? Would Nate go visit USC and have a weekend fling with Annie that would send Ethan and Vanessa into bi-coastal fits of jealousy? Would Dixon travel to the Upper East Side for a national lacrosse tournament and get inevitably sucked into one of Blair's love triangles?

The primary reason we don't think a crossover episode can work is that the vibes of these two shows seem incompatible to us. Gossip Girl has a kind of pathos that 90210 hasn't even come close to replicating, and the 90210 characters aren't developed enough yet to stand up to the Gossip Girl characters in a scene. Maybe we're wrong here. But, we're just saying, maybe the CW should wait a few seasons and create a crossover that would actually add something to both shows (a la the Buffy/Angel crossover -- "It's not enough time!" We still tear up thinking about that one), rather than just a gimicky stunt to drum up more viewers...Wow, sorry. We were two seconds away from a "creative integrity" tirade.

The Weekly Rewind: We're All Just a Bunch of Gossip Girls

Politics, TV shows, celebrities: It's all a mess of tawdry gossip. So why don't we delve right back into it with the highlights of the week:

As the new TV season started, we watched the premieres of Raising the Bar, America's Next Top Model, Sons of Anarchy, Gossip Girl and also 90210. And what did we learn? Teenagers and models are far more interesting than lawyers. (Sorry, Mark-Paul Gosselaar!)

We reported that David Duchovny had entered rehab for being a sex addict, maybe because he looked at too much computer porn. Then we heard it was actually because he fooled around with hot women. Which may be worse, but is far less embarrassing.

We found some funny-shaped Hannah Montana candy -- and, boy, did you guys have a lot to say about it!

We learned that Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester was almost born in jail. (We thought about hugging her and telling her that it doesn't matter, but didn't want to deal with the restraining order.)

We revealed a secret plot to suck your soul into a computer.

We heard from wacky old guys Alec Baldwin and David Letterman.

We overheard some heartfel t commentary at the Republican convention, and discovered that VP candidate Sarah Palin is made for TV.

We saw reporters get rocked like a hurricane.

We learned that in space, no one can hear you swear. (Correctly, anyway.)

We worried about Heidi and Spencer leaving The Hills, and about Kim Bauer coming back to 24.

But we can't wait to see Britney at the VMAs -- and talk to you about it next week.

Triple Geek Alert: "Buffy" Online Virtual World Is Coming

Nerdgirls and fanboys, will we ever see you again? Or will you disappear forever into the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer multiplayer online game, just announced by 20th Century Fox?

The World of Warcraft-style game will presumably allow players to interact with the main characters and fight vampires and demons, just like the Scooby Gang does on the show. (Can you also be a mean ol' vampire if you want to? They don't say. More important, where can we find Bad Willow?) There should be a two-dimensional version available by the end of the year, and what we presume will be an incredibly cool 3-D total-immersion package coming later on.

Says the company in a press release: "As a brilliant storyteller and world-maker, [Buffy creator] Joss Whedon crafts stories that expand perfectly into the new medium of virtual worlds.... Not to give away too much, but when the Buffy team finished the television series, they created the perfect launching point for an MMOG [massively multiplayer online game] where everyone will feel like they're an important character in the ongoing story."

The game will use technology created by The Multiverse Network, which is also planning another one based on the movie Titanic. (Don't everybody crowd into that old car with Kate Winslet at once!)

Geek City! Seth Green and Breckin Meyer To Play Comic Book Guys on "Heroes"

Good news for the geek squad: Entertainment Weekly's casting wizard Michael Ausiello says that Seth Green and Breckin Meyer are near a deal to appear on Heroes for a multiepisode story arc. If all goes as planned, the buddies will play "comic book aficionados who cross paths with (and perhaps serve as advisors to) one of the Heroes."

Former child star Green, of course, is familiar to nerds of all kinds for his work in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the Austin Powers movies. Meyer is recognizable from sitcoms as well as such kid-friendly films as Garfield and Herbie Fully Loaded. They've worked together on several films, and both write and do voices for Green's animated-action-figure series Robot Chicken.

They're both funny guys, and the characters should provide some good self-referential fun for Heroes' most dedicated fan base, the Comic-Con set. Especially if one of them ends up with the cheerleader.

Before we all put on our moisture-wicking athletic socks and prepare to watch eight billion hours of Olympics coverage, let's take a look back at some top stories of the week:

We watched a bunch of Calvin Klein Obsession ads and decided not to go to film school.

We marveled at scenes from the never-made Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Animated Series and wished there were more.

We found out what happened to Joe Schmo and Joe Millionaire, and it wasn't pretty.

We learned that Charlie Sheen earns twice as much as Mariska Hargitay -- and that Lauren Conrad "earns" 30 times as much as us.

We watched supposedly funny campaign ads by John McCain and Barack Obama, and decided that at least one of them should get a new day job. (Preferably, one that doesn't involve Tyra Banks impersonating your wife.)

We watched as Nashville Star and Last Comic Standing and So You Think You Can Dance crowned new winners, and wished we were watching American Idol instead. Especially after a brand-new Claymate entered the world.

We saw two Christian Slaters, after almost forgetting there was even one.

We wondered if it's possible to make singer Joss Stone unattractive enough for English royalty.

We realized that no Bob Saget roast would be complete without Olsen-twin sex jokes, but were still kind of shocked by Uncle Jesse's.

We developed a crush on a newscaster. And saw a newscaster get an inappropriate crush of his own.

We got jailhouse survival tips from Jack Bauer.

We heard about some place overseas where a bunch of sporting events are about to begin.

Come Watch Some Scenes From "Buffy: The Animated Series"

Way back in 2001, producer Joss Whedon and a bunch of other people involved with Buffy the Vampire Slayer started working on an animated version of the series. It featured the voices of the show's original actors, along with Giselle Loren (who played Buffy in some video games) in place of Sarah Michelle Gellar, and was intended to cover the Scooby Gang's early high-school years and be more kid-friendly than the original (though still kind of scary).

Soon afterward, though, Fox canceled its Fox Kids channel, which had intended to air the show, and no other network was willing to buy it. So despite the fact that several scripts had been written, Buffy: The Animated Series was never made. (Although there are rumors that it still might happen someday.)

Meanwhile, a four-minute promo just leaked to the Internet, and we've got it. Click through to check it out:

Okay, so maybe it isn't the second coming of Buffy, Angel and Serenity all in one, but the first part of Joss Whedon's superhero web musical Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog is just plain fun to watch. Starring Neil Patrick Harris as a hapless evil genius, Nathan Fillion as a jerkwad superhero and Felicia Day as the neighborhood activist they both want to impress, the show features good music, surprisingly good singing and -- despite what looks like 1/20th the budget of an episode of Buffy -- even a decent special effect or two. It's also pretty damn funny.

And it's ready for viewing on your Internet box, so watch it here.

Update: According to Dr. Horrible's Twitter account, too much interest from cultists like us has temporarily crashed the site. Some evil genius!

Comedy Central Names Top Five Funniest Episodes of "Buffy"

Kudos to Comedy Central, for putting a number and names to the funniest episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a show which despite being egregiously silly at times, we still tend to think of as slightly mopey more than "funny ha ha."

(Yes, Xander Harris figures prominently.)

Throughout the series, Xander rebelled verbally against his comic foil status—declaring that he was not going to be Dracula's "butt-monkey" and that he was sick of getting the "funny syphilis"—but in The Zeppo he stumbles into transcendence, conjuring up his true self years before he's ready to become that guy permanently. Xander scores a cool car, is tormented by un-dead greasers, loses his virginity to Faith and finally proves he's capable of something more than simple courage. The comedy is not incidental as it often is in Buffy. "The Zeppo" is possibly the best illustration of Buffy's greatness—apocalyptic panic mixed with teen comedy.

Reading this list is sort of like seeing Hilary Swank in a bikini; you're all like, "Yep, that sure is something I forget about sometimes."

Bonus points to Best Week Ever for including G.I.Joe's Scarlett and Baroness in their list of the best possible television threeways (meaning you getting it on with the two subjects), which is surprisingly comprehensive and mostly convincing. Honest to God, we'd never actually considered the possibility of Buffy and Willow kissing before today -- we know; what kind of nerds are we? -- but now we can't get it out of our minds. We think Xander could have pulled that one at some point if he'd tried... Season Three or so?

Anyways, for all BWE's efforts, the comments are still the best, most hysterical part of this meme...

Hulu Who? The WB Creates Its Own Online Video Portal: Buffy Will Be There, Hulu Will Not

Well, Hulu won’t share with Canadians. Now the WB won’t share with Hulu…

TV Squad reports: “Just days after launching a private beta of its new online video portal, The WB has announced plans to expand its online video distribution network….Here's how it will work: You'll be able to visit TheWB.com or TheKidsWB.com and watch full-length episodes of classic WB shows like Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and Gilmore Girls, or you'll be able to find videos through a number of partners including DailyMotion, Sling Media, Veoh, TiVo, and Joost. The WB currently distributes some TV shows through Hulu, but not all of them."

“It would have been nice if the WB had partnered with Hulu instead of competing with the web site. Fortunately, the distribution deals announced today mean that you don't need to visit two separate sites to find the content you're looking for. Some of the partner sites, including Veoh will have episodes from both Hulu and The WB, as well as selected content from CBS.”

The WB says “The launch of TheWB.com represents a natural progression of the Warner Bros. Television Group’s digital strategy and complements our core business, which is based upon episodic storytelling, first-class distribution and providing value to partners through advertising in a premium environment.”

Whatever...bring on Buffy!
