Cancer Survivor Christina Applegate Lights Up, We All Lose Our Minds

We love Christina Applegate. She's still young, and yet has seemingly been gorgeous forever. And she's a hell of a comedic actress. We were shocked and upset when we heard she had breast cancer, and then amazed at how bravely, boldly, and openly she took on the disease.

Perhaps because Christina Applegate - a great beauty, talent, survivor - is so impressive to us and many TV-watchers like us, we've all made the mistake of idealizing her. Which would explain the horror and controversy over this picture of her smoking a cigarette...

Yeah, she did it. The lady with the double mastectomy lit up, and you know whoever took this photo got paid. Smoking's a terrible habit, and no one should do it, as this 3-year old kid could tell you. However, fucking up happens all the time. We fucked up at least twenty times today, and that's only the stuff we noticed. But because Christina Applegate is a celebrity and not a regular person, we now give you "a source" telling The Insider how and why she fucked up:

"Christina had been a smoker for quite some time," the source says. "She stopped smoking when she received her health news last year, but as everyone knows it's a difficult to break an addictive smoking habit. Considering all the stress she's had over the years, she had that occasional weak moment which has led to the occasional cigarette. We need to remember she's only human."

First things first, Katie Holmes -- We know we may have had some questions, and even -- dare we say -- criticisms about you in the past, but for once, you'll hear nothing but embarassingly gushy flattery from us. Get ready, here we go: "That dress is fabulous! We LOVE it! You're fabulous! That dress makes us love YOU!" Just one thing though, are your shoes the same color as your feet, because it's almost like you have weird pointy fin-feet -- like elf ears attached to your ankles.

Okay, Katrina Bowden -- It's not that we hate this dress -- we don't love it, but it's mostly, you know, fine. It's more the fact that you are a) alarmingly skinny (look! you're metallic gladiator sandals won't even stay up on your ankles!), and b) that your legs are a distinctly different shade of spray-on butterscotch than the rest of you. We're unsettled by that, we can't help it.

Eva Longoria -- The thing is, if your going to go with sherbert tones, it's probably best to go with a less is more philosophy. Put another way, the demi ruffle is a little much for us. We feel like that much salmon fabric paired with a bedazzled neckline should be saved for The Miss America Pagent, which, as we said earlier today, we neither watch nor care about.

Kate Winslet -- Have we already said congrats on winning two golden globes? Because if not, congrats again -- you deserve them. At first glance, we sort of like this dress. The color is stunning and the sillouette is quite nice on you, except that when you get to your knees, it looks a bit as though the photo has been cut off and the bottom half replaced with a different dress of the same color -- is it supposed to look like that? Also, is that lycra?

Angelina Jolie -- Listen, nobody loves you more than us, and we'd like nothing more than to tell you how great you look, but the truth is, this dress looks a like something we'd expect to see on Thyne Daly. Even your hair is weirdly matronly.

Christina Applegate -- Girl, you are fierce. We love this color on you, and may we also say, it's great to see you out on the town rocking a one-shouldered number like you've never even heard of breast cancer. You are our hero. We're so enamored with you, that we're barely even noticing the weirdly gathered seam on the front.

Applegate's show is on an indefinite break in favor of 2-hour episodes of The Bachelor, possibly returning in late March. And right when it was announced Angie Harmon was joining the cast.

These two-hour, oversized episodes seem to be the new big thing. They're much cheaper to produce than two separate one-hour programs, and the reasoning is, if you like a show, won't you really like more of it?

No. The answer is No. Although we enjoy her comedic stylings on Samantha Who?, it’s her candor and strength that have made us heart her today. Christina speaks about her experience with cancer and her decision to undergo a mastectomy on a special episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show focusing that will air this afternoon. People.com reports that Christina discusses her surgical decision saying:

'Yep. I was just gonna let them go,' says Applegate, who then says, when asked if she cried, "You know, I – at first I didn't. And then when I met with my doctor and I told him that was my decision and he brought the surgeon in and it was like the flood gates just opened up and I – I lost it.

Christina will be sharing the stage with Nancy Brinker, founder of the Susan G. Komen Foundation, which supports breast cancer research. Click Here to see a short clip of the episode.

The Olympics are coming to an end, and the new TV season hasn't started yet. What the heck can we do with all that extra free time? Maybe we should just sit back, relax, and spend it on the highlights of the week:

We learned that George and Izzie are TV's most annoying couple, but then we remembered Ross and Rachel.

We were alternately thrilled and disappointed by Michael Phelps, and Bigfoot.

We heard Hurley sing, and it was awesome.

We remembered the most terrible game shows of all time, and it kind of made us want to watch them again. But the most memorable moments in TV history? Eh, seen 'em.

We heard that Kelly Bundy's just fine, and that made us happy.

We saw what The Bachelor's ex Shayne Lamas is like at a party, and it's pretty much what we figured.

We discovered that many TV stars don't watch TV, because they're too busy sipping expensive champagne with fashion models.

We figured out how to get MTV's original stars cable-ready again.

We wondered why this statue of Fonzie looks so much like Christopher Walken.

We learned why Canadians think the beaver is a proud and noble animal.

We learned who might be on Dancing With the Stars this season, and hoped Kim Kardashian wouldn't have center-of-gravity issues.

We discovered that the Internet is nothing but a gathering place for Knight Rider and Baywatch fanatics. But then, we knew that already.

Wow; we admit, we're a little shocked that Samantha Who?'s Christina Applegate opted for what was certainly, as she described it, the "tough choice" and underwent a double mastectomy to battle the cancer she was recently diagnosed. With her family history, and the early onset of her initial diagnosis, it was probably the most effective treatment available to her -- and by God, it seems to have worked, as she's been declared 100% cancer-free. Bam!, stupid cancer; didn't see that one comin', didja?

So, to you, Ms. Applegate, we say: holy crap, you are one spectacularly impressive lady. We look forward to seeing you at "Stand Up To Cancer" on September 5th and on Samantha Who? when it returns this fall to ABC, and also to checking out what we are sure will be your presumably just-as-impressive-as-you-are replacement rack at whichever awards show it is that you first bring them out. (That's right kids; the happy ending to this story is "Boobs.")

Samantha Who? star Christina Applegate is undergoing treatment for an early form of breast cancer, said a representative of the 36-year old actress this weekend. The cancer was detected following a doctor-ordered MRI, and Applegate is reportedly expected to make a full recovery. In fact, Applegate will not only undergo treatment while maintaining her shooting schedule for Samantha Who -- which was a modest hit last season for ABC and netted Applegate an Emmy nod for Best Actress in a Comedy -- but she also intends to honor her commitment to co-emcee the Stand Up to Cancer telethon, which will air on the big three September 5. (Applegate's mom is a breast cancer survivor, and the Married... With Children and Jesse vet has long been an advocate for research and awareness efforts.)

Bummer news for Teri Hatcher fans out there: first off, she took that picture. Yeah, WTF?

Second off, she didn't make the short list for this year's Actress in a Comedy category. (Psssst... if you see her don't mention that the other three Housewives are still up for the award!)

According to WENN/Hollywood.com:

Marcia Cross, Felicity Huffman and Eva Longoria Parker have all been shortlisted for the prestigious prize at this year's TV awards--but Hatcher's name was noticeably missing from the semifinalists.

Web site GoldDerby.com reveals that the other actresses vying to take home the award include America Ferrera, Tina Fey, Christina Applegate, Mary-Louise Parker, Sarah Silverman, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and (Ed: Hooray!) Pushing Daisies star Anna Friel.

Well, that's a fine bunch of candidates and we frankly don't know which one could have possibly taken... um... Sarah Silverman? Oh, hang on a sec, we didn't do that right.

SARAH SILVERMAN?

Think we know someone who won't be going on Kimmel anytime soon.
