An EBay auction to have lunch with Jon Hamm? In related news, EBay just exploded due to overuse. Virtual shards of EBay are flying all over cyberspace.

This is, of course, for a cause - the Adrienne Shelly Foundation, which supports the artistic achievements of female filmmakers with scholarships and grants. And the man we know and love as Don Draper isn't the only celebrity lunch available on auction. There are some pretty awesome other celebrities as well...

Other meals with celebrities up for auction include Hamm's "Mad Men" co-star John Slattery, Paul Rudd, Kevin Smith, Nathan Fillion, Patrick Duffy, David Schwimmer, Julianna Margulies and others. The auctions are scheduled to end April 16.

The Kevin Smith winner is totally going to be a pimply male comic-book fanatic with some massive inheritance. But Paul Rudd? That'd be a fun and funny lunch. And Schwimmer? If we won, we'd bombard him with Aniston questions. Nurse Hathaway? Come on. We've been fantasizing about having something not at all like lunch with her since 1994.

But Jon Hamm, clearly, is the big prize here, and should obviously get the high bid. Lunch with Jon Hamm would be awesome. Probably better for a heterosexual woman or homosexual man, but potentially great for a heterosexual man as well. We've got an idea how that would go. See, about five years ago we were in a bar in LA, and George Clooney showed up and took a big booth with six or so of his buddies, most of whom kind of resembled Willie Garson. Clooney looked exactly like in the movies or TV - he's absurdly handsome in real life - but the rest of his crew was not in the running for Sexiest Man Alive, to put it mildly.

What happened next was remarkable - nearly every attractive woman in the bar, and it was a big bar, packed on a Saturday night - rotated into that booth to sit with Clooney and his crew. Attractive women who didn't know each other squeezed into the booth, three or four at a time, and then left, replaced by a new round of attractive women. And, since six of the seven men at that booth were not George Clooney, all these attractive women were snuggled up with those Willie Garsons. We thought "ah. That's what it'd be like to hang with Clooney."

And that's probably what it'd be like to have lunch with Jon Hamm.We see it now...

Your humble correspondent would arrive in a black suit with skinny black tie, immediately order two martinis, and then ask Jon Hamm what he'd like to drink. He'd say "you know it's only a character..." and I would say "shhh. Don't ruin it." The women would rotate in to our table. They would attempt to talk to John Hamm, but would wind up discussing fantasy sports and baldness solutions with yours truly. We would order lots of oysters, more martinis. Oysters, martinis, oysters, martinis, oysters, martinis. When the fifth round of attractive women came to sat down I would vomit on everyone. Jon Hamm, covered in vomit, would vow to never do anything for charity again.

Ridiculously handsome Mad Men star, Jon Hamm, has been cast as a lawyer in the indie flick Howl. The film will focus on the obscenity trial on Allen Ginsberg's famous poem. Lawyer? Really?

Hamm will star as defense attorney Jake Ehrlich, whose life was the inspiration for the TV series "Perry Mason." (variety.com)

We know, we know, Hamm's playing the humble "I just really love acting, glad to be part of an ensemble" guy, and we're dying to see him become the next actor to successfully jump from TV to films. And yeah, we want to see him become the next George Clooney.

But note to Mr. Hamm: Clooney's first movie after his success with ER wasn't Good Night and Good Luck. It was From Dusk Til Dawn, which was most notable for Salma Hayek as a vampire stripper. And gave Clooney a chance to show a darker, funnier side. So, Jon: we just want to see what's beneath the suit. And maybe a chance to daydream about a vampire bite. Yowza.

(Just don't go Caruso on us? Don Draper must stay on Mad Men for many more seasons or there will be hell to pay!)

Clooney might be getting his ass handed to him in our little 'Would You Rather: George Clooney or Jon Hamm' poll. But we still love him. He's unquestionalby hot (although apparently not as hot as Hamm). He was great on ER last week. And he's in Chad doing Brangelina-esque relief work. Maybe he'll bring back an adopted brood; this would make him even hotter. Hot Dads are great (remember Three Men and a Baby? Tom Selleck with the full handlebar stash? Awesome.)

Clooney sends dispatches from Chad, and from what we can see he doesn't have any babies yet. But he does have a thing for dirty bathrooms, and he does a mean Andy Rooney impression.

Tonight, George Clooney and Jon Hamm are back-to-back in primetime. Clooney will be on re-rocking his old scrubs as ER gets ready to go out in a blaze of glory, and Jon Hamm finishes up his 3 episode run on 30 Rock as Liz Lemon’s sexy/geeky love interest. Both play doctors. Both are, to use the technical terminology, super-duper hot.

The idea of these two titans touching timeslots [UPDATE: Guess not, actually; thanks Chicago Tribune! Annnnnywayyyy...] brings up a very serious question for us, a question we will be passing on to you. Search your soul and answer carefully. Who would you rather: Clooney on ER or Hamm on 30 Rock?

"30 Rock": Thank God Liz Lemon Seems To Want Sex Again

Well, who wouldn't with that guy around.

If there's been one development on 30 Rock that's distressed us over the last three years, it's that there's not enough Pete, Frank, or Cerie. If there are two distressing developments, it's that first thing and that Jenna sings too much. But if there are three distressing developments, it's those first two things and also it's how despite being played by one of the brainiest and beautiest women in TV, Liz Lemon was somehow becoming kind of unappealing. We'd still be rooting for her, you understand, but with her obsession with having a baby, coupled with we were concerned that, well, she was turning into the kind of person that we try to avoid in the real world.

For example, we can't have been the only ones who've been a little disappointed with Liz's story arc this year: becoming so obsessed with having a kid that she winds up stealing baby clothes and dating a dwarf. Funny stuff, to be sure, and yet, between that, her increasingly squeamish attitude towards sex, the disappointingly traditional twists, turns, and resolution of the Fey/Poehler adoption comedy Baby Mama, and the disconcertingly bifurcated relationship with sex that Tina Fey herself has demonstrated in interviews -- she loves to play strippers, she says, but thinks that strip clubs shouldn't exist; she downplays and undermines her looks, yet admits that tweaking her appearance was a major step in her career -- we were starting to feel a little weird about rooting for Liz Lemon like we do. Rooting for... what, exactly? Eschewing enthusiasms for everything other than work, junk food, asexual reproduction, and discomfort in one's own skin?

Really? We know this is a comedy, and everyone's a little eccentric on the show, and granted, we also try to avoid corporate boors, self-obsessed actresses, and the mentally ill in our daily lives, but Liz is different than Jack, Jenna, and Tracy, right? She's the main character, our "in" on the show, and although everything on the show is played for laughs, we were still unnerved by the degree to which we were coming to regard her life as not just a little sad, but also misguided. Like, why does she need a baby exactly? What's the deal with her dating hangups really? Is she a feminist hero, a feminist anti-hero? A feminist anything? Are these character issues that we'll explore, or gags that will tossed away like so many muffin tops and eventually exasperate us? The mental gymnastics required to handle all this was starting to dry up our mindgrapes.

More importantly, how long are we all supposed to act like Liz Lemon isn't actually hot and doesn't know it -- doesn't know she can get any man she wants, anything she wants, when she dresses great, has great hair, great glasses, and is the funniest, smartest person in a room. On the one hand, we deeply admired Tina Fey's attempts to create this somewhat awkward, unappealing variation on the anti-hero; on the other, we were reminded of mid-decade Charlize Theron roles and the supposedly unattractive sorority girls in The House Bunny who were actually starlets in sweats and glasses. Like, a little bit of this is interesting; years of it is disingenous.

Well, thank God that as of last night, Lemon is finally getting interested in someone, acknowledging and using her sexuality, showing a little bit of desire to even out that endless skepticism and rapier-sharp scorn, etc. We know -- Jon Hamm's only got a 3 episode arc. Also: it's a bad idea to get involved with your neighbors. But still, it's so great to see Liz enthusiastic about another person who's a grownup, because really, the last time she actually crushed on anyone was what... Floyd? Two real crushes in three years? Sure, we'll buy that. That sounds like people we know. And that's all we're asking for here -- a the occasional, realistic enthusiasm on Lemon's part, something to flesh out her weird, angry, frumpy, asocial impulses. Like, we're not saying that any of that stuff has to go away -- it shouldn't, it's who Liz is. It's just, you know, that stuff can't be all of her -- she needs to have other stuff come into play. Because how long has it been since anything's changed with Lemon, really? Maybe Dr. Drew will bring out a side to Lemon that we know is there and have rarely seen, and flesh out a character that despite her killer line readings was threatening to become a bit of a one-dimensional bummer.

Jon Hamm's live-in girlfriend Jennifer Westfeldt was part of the Grey's Anatomy/Private Practice crossover event last night. And Hamm, of course, was on 30 Rock. Which means from 9:30-10 p.m., the lovers, who've been together for a decade (where's the ring, Chief?) were in a head-to-head battle, on network TV! Dammit, why didn't we find this out until it was too late?

So here's what we want to know, from all of you who watched one and Tivoed the other: who won? We're not talking ratings, that's no judge. We're saying, who was better, Hamm or Westfeldt?

Does a dollop of Dapper Dan make TV's Don Draper the man?

"It's the bane of my existence. Goofy hair," he said in a self-deprecating interview with CNN. "It never looks good ... It's a pain."
Hamm says he's always worn his hair long, but had to cut it for AMC's TV series, [Mad Men] in which he plays a 1960s Madison Avenue ad executive. He says stylists on the show, armed with hair spray and blow dryers, mold his coiffure into a hard shell. Helmet hair has come in handy at work.
"I've had a piece of the set fall on my head and my hair didn't move," he said. "I had seven stitches in my head and my hair didn't move. That's impressive."

Totally. Jezebel notes that this news -- and the photos they've found to illustrate the point -- causes ladyboners to "fall down go boom." Prolly so, though as victims of bad hair ourselves, we have to note -- it's a chronic condition, sure, but it's not fatal and it is treatable.

Oh, one other thing: check out this image Jezebel pulled out to illustrate their post on Hamm's tonsorial woes...

The beautiful thing about the internet is when you're right about something in advance, you got proof! And we were so right about Jon Hamm getting booked for 30 Rock after his increasingly impressive appearance on the Lorne Michaels mothership last weekend.

And when you're wrong, well, you can always hit "Unpublish." Assuming, of course, that you still work for the same blog, ha ha. Anyways, we got all that and more, plus: the latest show to probably get cancelled, what a couple of Battlestar and The Wire's best actors are up to, Lorelai Gilmore's Broadway plans, and the New York Times trying to steal our thunder. Jerks!

-- According to Entertainment Weekly (where we borrowed that image, thanks guys, we can't stand to look at Photoshop right now!), Jon Hamm is being courted for a multi-episode arc on 30 Rock. It's a match made in heaven, actually, considering how wonderful and ratings-challenged both Mad Men and 30 Rock are. Nothing succeeds like combined on-the-bubble-cult-status!

-- Speaking of predictions, the New York Times seems to think that The West Wing deserves points for predicting the whole Obama-vs.-McCain thing with the whole Santos-vs.-Winick thing in its final year. We say that since the really interesting part of the election cycle this year was the primaries, we fail to be impressed, and also QUIT HOGGING OUR SPOTLIGHT, NEW YORK TIMES!

It never ends, guys. Every single day, we learn something new about Saturday Night Live that blows our mind. Find out the latest news after the break -- plus: who's dying on Doctor Who, whether that dude from Top Model is gay, the return of MTV's greatest VJ ever, and more on the ladies of The View. It seems that there may be a method behind all this madness....

-- The SNL promotions tour continues apace, with Seth Meyers turning up on Fresh Air yesterday to deliver this astonishing bit of news: Barack Obama would probably have appeared on the 10/25 episode of the show had his grandmother not become so ill. Which would have been great comedy and all, but really, the takeaway here is that Jon Hamm was dealing with even more variables than we realized and STILL managed a convincing James Mason impression.

-- It's official: David Tennant is leaving Doctor Who, with his iteration of the Doctor dying off after the 2009 holiday specials -- and just as the new showrunner Steven Moffat takes over for Russell T. Davies. No word on who's taking over for Tennant yet, but we're kind of pushing for a lady. After the new Starbuck turned out to be a gal, we were hot on the new Michael Knight being one too, but since that didn't happen, well, we want everyone to be women.

-- Look for the return of Law and Order: Criminal Intent to be delayed next year. Or, if you're like us, don't.

-- Somebody finally asked if Top Model's Nigel Barker is gay. God bless you, E! Online reader "Holly"! (Turns out he's not.)

-- In the words of Defamer, Barbara Walters is giving Elisabeth Hasselbeck "enough rope to hang herself" on The View. Which is weird, right? She's such a slight thing, and yet -- so much rope!

-- And finally, you kids out there will not remember the brief and fiery turn by LES weirdo Jesse Camp as an MTV VJ -- and it's been clear that MTV themselves have been trying to forget it -- but damned if they aren't bringing the guy back for their TRL sendoff! Props, MTV! That guy ruled!

Wake Up And SNiLe: Were We The Only Ones Smelling Schweddy Balls This Saturday?

Saturday Night Live got a new boyfriend this weekend, and his name is Jon Hamm. And since it's basically all we care about this morning, let's just skip everything else and get to the get to, shall we?

First things first: WE LOVE YOU, AMY POEHLER! Even though you are officially now off the show, we eagerly await seeing everything you do from now until the end of time. Also: your child is the comedy Messiah, no matter what you say, don't keep him to yourself.

All right, got that off our chest. Moving on.

As for the show itself: we think that NBC has as much invested with the ratings success of Mad Men as AMC now that Jon Hamm has so clearly demonstrated that he can bring the same dashing gravitas to pure idiocy that Alec Baldwin got a second career out of. Whether he was playing a suburban neighbor, JFK, James Mason, or Don Draper himself, Hamm exuded the sort of focused ludicrousness that this show thrives on -- and that must have been a balm to producer Lorne Michaels, who clearly had to reshuffle the show at the last minute to accomodate Poehler's absence and was likely grateful that he didn't have a lemon on his hands. Actually, ha ha, that makes us realize: we fully expect to be reading of Hamm's getting booked for the season finale of 30 Rock now. Can't you just see him as, well, Don Draper, but in 2008 and for laughs, maybe trying to nail Liz Lemon while destroy Jack Donaghy? We sure can. We practically just saw it all over ourselves.

Now, the third major thing to happen on Saturday was the return of yet another cast member to the program. This time, it was Maya Rudolph, playing Michelle Obama in that "Obama Variety Show" bit.

Ok, so, it wasn't the most amazing sketch ever. It had some nice moments but not that many, and in fact, when we first watched SNL on DVR a few hours after air this weekend, we FF'd right through it at first because, well, it just looked like a stinker. Which it's not, actually, it's just not great. But is that enough for our old pal Salon Sarah to ask whether the show's gone "limp"? "In a slump"? Just because the show can't do enough with Maya Rudolph as Michelle Obama?

We're huge fans of Rudolph's, who in films like Idiocracy has proven that she had skills that were never given a proper airing live from New York, but we have a hard time extrapolating anything from her reappearance in this, a week whose production was so clearly reshuffled at the last-minute that Coldplay, the musical guest, appeared four times. (Once more, and we're pretty sure they'd have resorted to playing U2 covers. Zing!) Maybe Rudolph was in some Poehler sketch that got replaced? Heck, let's not forget: Maya Rudolph couldn't get enough decent exposure on the laziest of weeks when she was on staff. Returning in the middle of the most heated political season in decades, on a week when the show's MVP disappears at the last minute? If this were baseball, there'd be a couple asterisks on this episode, so it's hard to hold anything against 'em for not making more of her.

We're not even sure that there's a case to be made that the returns to the show of Rudolph, Tina Fey, Will Ferrell or Chris Parnell prove anything about there being a dearth of good performers, which our wise and esteemed colleague and her wise and esteemed colleagues seem to imply. This ain't Dan Ackroyd coming back to play Bob Dole in a surpriseless incumbent election where Norm MacDonald, the original guy to play Dole, is starting to get squeezed out of the show. There's something historic beginning and ending here -- in the White House, in the electorate, and on the show -- and if this affords former cast members the right to a final victory lap, all the better. (Particularly Ferrell, who as we've noted before, defined something about 43 as astutely as Dana Carvey defined 41.)

In the end, it comes down to this: it's always tempting to say SNL's seen its day, but we gotta say, if "Vincent Price's Halloween Special" is the product of a slump, then give us the slump any day.

"Mad Men" Actors Don't Have Contracts, Either

As we reported last week, American Movie Classics made a deal to bring Mad Men back for a third season, even though they haven't managed to negotiate a new contract with writer-creator Matthew Weiner. But now it turns out that there's another little detail they sort of forgot about: the actors.

According to Fox entertainment journalist Roger Friedman, "the network has no agreements with [Emmy-nominated] stars Jon Hamm and John Slattery, or any of the other cast members."

What? Um, how the heck do they expect to make the show then?

Of course, Mad Men has one of the best ensemble casts on television, and any of the actors would be sorely missed if AMC couldn't cut a deal with them. But Friedman points out that Don Draper himself might be the most difficult to bring back. "Hamm in particular poses a problem since he's turned into a huge breakout star. If Mad Men ended right now, the 36-year-old actor could go to movies and easily become the next George Clooney. This puts AMC and [coproducer Lionsgate Pictures] in a strange position to renegotiate Hamm's contract. It's going to cost them more than they've probably ever paid for anything."

We mentioned before that doing the show without Weiner at the helm would be nearly impossible. Still, maybe the other writers could hack it -- the way Peggy managed to take over for Don on the show this week while he was off on his vision quest. But to do the show without Draper himself, the mighty -- and mighty conflicted -- lead character? What would be the point?

We're waiting to see what's going to happen with all this, but it doesn't look good. And with all the crapola on TV these days, the idea that a small cable channel couldn't be bothered to negotiate contracts for its showcase series -- one of the best dramas of the decade -- just kinda sucks.

Don't tell us we're the only ones completely floored by the fact that Bryan Cranston -- who we love, even if we never saw Breaking Bad -- won Best Actor in a Drama. It's flooring! Malcolm's Dad took the award away from Don Freaking Draper! And got more votes than Dexter! Do you think the vote got split? Who can say. In any event, bravo to Cranston and AMC, who managed to snag a Best Actor award even if Jon Hamm went home empty handed.

TV Columnist Admits TV Stars Hate TV

We all know people who claim they don't ever watch TV, except maybe Mad Men and Masterpiece Theatre and the occasional roundtable debate about the effects of global warming on penguin habitats. But now we have confirmation from AP television writer Frazier Moore that this group of Hills-despising, How I Met Your Mother-ignoring snobs includes TV performers themselves.

"Among the scads of TV stars I've talked to, I never made a point of grilling them on their TV consumption," Moore writes. "I don't recall how often it came up. But over time I started to realize (and marvel) that, out of everyone who did address the issue with me, fewer than a dozen of them copped to being TV fans.

"The rest: Well, they don't shun just the programs they appear in. They don't watch TV, period. Or so they claim."

Well, sure -- it's one thing to play Horny Nerd at Sci-Fi Convention on The Big Bang Theory, and another to admit you watch the thing. What would you tell your friends when you run into them at Pinkberry? In fact, Moore points out, it's obvious what Hollywood's attitude toward the medium itself is, given that the TV-watchingest TV characters tend to be fat louts such as Homer Simpson, Peter Griffin and Tony Soprano.

Luckily, not all performers feel that way about their own audience. The actors who Moore says do admit to being fans of the tube also participate in some of the smartest, most pop-culture-relevant shows: The Office and Extras writer-actor Ricky Gervais, Robot Chicken cocreator Seth Green, and Mad Men star Jon Hamm.

So if you ever catch yourself saying all you watch is Mad Men and The Office, keep in mind that the people on the screen are home with a bowl of popcorn and Two and a Half Men or some Law & Order marathon, just like everybody else.
