EW can exclusively confirm that Cavallari will indeed be starring in MTV's reality series. The 22-year old's first appearance will be the May 31st season finale (she catches the bouquet at Heidi and Spencer’s wedding, natch) and she'll appear in 10 episodes this fall. (EW.com)

It seems Kristin can't get enough pseudo-unscripted television in her life -- or maybe she's hoping a stint on The Hills will set her on the path to acting stardom?

"The goal for me is to get my fans excited about me again. When I first started out, I had a celebrity name but I didn’t have the acting skills I have now. If I have some buzz with my name again, I feel like it will only help.” (EW.com)

We've always had a semi-tortured relationship with MTV's True Life documentaries (who could forget the harrowing "I'm Addicted to Crystal Meth" episode of '02? Or the oddly chilling "I Self-Injure" episode of '07?), but it's been a while since we've been as all-out horrified by one as we were this weekend during "I Hate My Small Breasts" in which Nicole, mother to 18 year old Shacole, tries to shame her daughter into getting breast implants...

Mom: Have you heard of that website where, like, people pay for you to get your boobs done and everything?
Shacole: You have to send custom photos and videos...basically they're paying you to be their online porn star.
Mom: What's wrong with that?
Shacole: Don't you just want me to be happy?
Mom: I'm just saying I'm kind of disappointed in you not wanted to get them done still. I promise you I'm always going to tell you, you need to get your boobs done.
Shacole: O-kay....

It seems reality television gurus Mary-Ellis Bunim and Jonathan Murray are hard at work filling in the gaps in MTV's unscripted lineup with a new Project Runway-esque reality competition called The Stylist...

The network is set to announce a series order for "The Stylist" on Tuesday during its upfront presentation to advertisers. On the show, a group of fashion stylists -- design-savvy professionals who assemble clothes and accessories for celebrities and models -- compete for a contract with a major agency.
"Stylist" marks a slight departure for the network. MTV has aired occupation-based competition series, including "Miss Seventeen," but "Stylist's" format also would be at home on such networks as Bravo, TLC and the CW. The number of episodes and "Stylist" premiere date are not known. (The Live Feed)

Much as we'd like to sit here looking down our disdainful noses at the current state of MTV reality shows, we have to admit to feeling at least a tad intrigued. Damn Project Runway and its crazy legal battles that have left us bereft of cutthroat fashion reality competition for so long. We'll give Stylist a shot as long as it's less mind-numbingly dull than the loathesome Rachel Zoe Project...

Great piece by Tim Arango in the New York Times Saturday about what MTV's new reality show The Buried Life - in which 4 buddies travel around the country fulfilling the wishes of the less fortunate -means about MTV and youth culture in the Age of Obama.

After years of The Hills and My Super Sweet Sixteen, is having a social conscience the hip new thing?

Four buddies set off across the country in an R.V., video camera in tow, to knock items off their “100 things to do before I die” list: kiss the Stanley Cup, get a tattoo, grow a mustache. With plenty of high jinks and adolescent humor, “The Buried Life” seems like the perfect MTV reality show, except for one unexpected twist. At each stop the group helps deserving locals with their own wishes. In Idaho, for example, they took eight children with brain cancer on a shopping spree at Toys “R” Us.

Meet MTV for the era of Obama. After years of celebrating wealth, celebrity and the vapid excesses of youth, MTV is trying to gloss its escapist entertainment with a veneer of positive social messages...

Executives looked at in-house research and the work of William Strauss, a generational expert who gave a presentation to MTV executives last fall, and saw that the country’s young were deeply engaged in the election and becoming more civic-minded.

One point of discussion at the meetings was whether shows about rich young girls were still relevant.

“It was very clear we were at one of those transformational moments, when this new generation of millennials were demanding a new MTV,” said Stephen Friedman, MTV’s general manager, using the term for those born between 1980 and 2000.

In the era that was passing, Mr. Friedman said, “the humor was more cynical, the idea of community seemed earnest and not cool. It’s the opposite now.”

Community is cool? Cool. We know MTV, the network of A Shot At Love With Tila Tequila, would never air a show about guys going around the country doing charity work unless they thought they could make money off it. Here's hoping they do.

Second, it shouldn't be hard to lure Janeane Garofalo away from her snooze-inducing gig on 24. Third, we like to work an original Mighty Ducks cast member into our programming whenever we can. Fourth, what's Michael Ian Black doing that's so important he can't spare the time? Recession, reshmession. The former Mr. Jessica Simpson has a new job: producer for the reality show "Taking the Stage."

The 10-episode series will follow the lives of five students at Cincinnati's School for Creative and Performing Arts. It is set to debut March 19.

MTV described the show as the first of its kind to be scored with music performed by cast members in-scene. Each episode of "Taking the Stage" will feature songs and dance routines written and choreographed by the cast.

"'Taking the Stage' is an entirely new genre of television for us ... the reality musical drama," Tony DiSanto, head of MTV programming, said in a statement. "It has heart, emotion, real stakes, and music organically woven in to the stories as the method of expression for this amazing group of kids." (upi.com)

As you know, Lachey was a former member of the sausage-fest/boy-band known as 98 Degrees. which no doubt qualifies him to decide on musical theatre, right? Suuuuure. But songs and dance routines done by the cast? Every week? Yeesh. Whattaya bet the pitch for this went something like "It's High School Musical -- The Reality Show!" Which when you're pitching at MTV is like saying "It's peanut butter and chocolate!" Wow, guys, TV is like ordering Chinese food! One thing from column A, one thing from column B...

MTV Makes "Ground-Breaking" Foray Into Scripted Shows With "HSM" Parody

After nearly a decade of an MTV programming lineup that was chock-a-block full of every conceivable kind of reality show ranging from the unsettling (My Super Sweet Sixteen) to the uwatchable (Next, Parental Control) to the oddly satisfying and underappreciated (Fast Inc.), the cable network has announced plans to take a wacky step and produce scripted shows.

“We’re going to apply the same tenets of creativity and genre-busting to scripted comedy that ‘Laguna Beach’ used to makeover the documentary,” said MTV head of programming Tony DiSanto. “It makes sense as a progression for us when a lot of our shows like ‘Run’s House’ and ‘The Hills’ look scripted to start going forward with actual scripted shows.” (Live Feed)

There are so many weird things about this quote, it's hard to know where to begin. First of all, why is he acting like MTV has never produced scripted shows before -- Undressed, anyone? Second, is Laguna Beach really genre-busting? Third, the idea that The Hills and Run's House paved the way for whatever MTV has on the agenda doesn't bode well for the future.

Nevertheless, MTV's first forray into the allegedly uncharted waters of scripted comedy is a High School Musical spoof based on the online series Private High Musical...

Does it make us painfully un-fun to admit that we have a limited tolerance for pot jokes? We've got Half-baked -- we're good, no? Quota filled. Regardless, we can't say we'll be sorry to see less reality television on the MTV lineup, so while we're not quite buying it as a "new" idea, we feel like it's a step in the right direction.

But his new show, MTV’s The Phone looks kinda wack . . .

Nymag.com says the show:

Revolves around contestants who receive a spooky call on an anonymous cell phone that just happens to be in their immediate vicinity. The contestants then receive a series of instructions from a poor man's Jigsaw instructing them to complete some sort of The Mole meets Punk'd–type of mission.

So, surprise, surprise, we’re a bit, how shall we say . . . less than impressed. If JT pitched us a show about a dance off, (you know, dance battling for dollars, street style) we’d be ready. We’ve been waiting for a reality TV adaptation of You Got Served (only the best movie, evah). We love America’s Best Dance Crew, but there’s always room for JT to improve on Randy Jackson’s model. And if he tried, we’d be down like Julie Brown. But no, instead we get to watch wide-eyed teens solve ambiguous Hardy Boys mysteries that involve exploding BMWs.

MTV is concerned about the Chris and Rihanna. Aren’t we all? MTV producers have been watching the saga unfold since the alleged domestic attack on early on February 8th. The Love In Trouble news special, airing this Monday at 6pm will feature journalists, industry professionals, and “experts” along with an in-studio audience. The special will “provide insight and commentary about what the incident means for both artists’ careers and lives, and society in general.”

The man formerly known as Cordozar Calvin Broadus Jr. is back on MTV, with a new variety show filmed at a Los Angeles nightclub. Dogg After Dark, which was just announced, will premiere Feb. 17th at 9 p.m. (next Tuesday, for the date-challenged) and feature musical performances, sketch comedy, and interviews. But it's always better to hear Snoop describe his own show:

Each time we think abou The State's untimely departure from MTV in 1995, a new wave of despair rises in our chests over the current wasteland of MTV programming that includes endless episodes of Parental Control and My Super Sweet Sixteen. Turns out we're not the only ones that try to fill the State-shaped hole in our hearts with regular viewings of Wet Hot American Summer and re-runs of I Love the 70's...

SF Weekly gives us the run-down on The State's recent reunion show that started like this:

"The first sketch took us back to Spain in 1492 with Michael Ian Black as Christopher Columbus showing two fellow conquistadors his three newly named ships: the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Vagina.

Columbus states he named the final ship after "the part of the woman that smells like the sea." When his counterparts (Showalter and Wain) urge Columbus to change the name of the Santa Vagina to the Santa Maria, Black argues, "Why would I name my pussy wagon after a virgin?" T.I. Mentors Teens For MTV Reality Show

We all know T.I.'s had some trouble recently -- arrested for illegal possesion of weapons, facing possible jail time, etc. But lately, it seems he's determined to turn the trouble train around and head in a more inspirational direction...

The Grammy award-winning rapper was arrested on October 13, 2007 -- the 32nd time he had been arrested -- with machine guns and silencers and spent more than six months under house arrest, facing a possible prison sentence of 30 years. But in a deal with prosecutors, T.I. -- who is not allowed to own firearms due to a previous drug conviction -- pleaded guilty to illegally possessing weapons and his sentencing was suspended for one year.
Under the deal, if T.I., a father of six, completes 1,000 hours of community service by next month, he will serve one year in jail. So far he has completed more than 900 hours, mostly talking to young people in a bid "to inspire change."
His reality series -- in which he tries to shock some young people by showing them what it's like to spend time in a prison cell, or taking them to a morgue to see a corpse -- is not part of his community service. MTV decline to comment on whether the rapper is being paid for the reality series. (Yahoo News)

So.....sort of like Scared Straight, but without all the sequels. Wait, maybe Danny Glover could be the co-host? He and T.I. could run a good cop/bad cop routine on the troubled teens! This could be genius.

"House Of Style" Is Coming Back?

Yay! MTV will reportedly bring back House Of Style, that 90's Cindy Crawford classic that women watched for the sake of fashion and men - um - also watched for the sake of fashion.

Crawford, while still Pepsi fantasy worthy, will not host this go-round - apparently, MTV has contracts out to two very foxy candidates who may split hosting duties.

The first is Israeli model Bar Rafaeli, perhaps best known as Leonardo DiCaprio's girlfriend:

And the second is 18-year-old Korean/African American young model of the moment Chanel Iman (her real first two names, just minus the "Robinson" on the end - she was born to be a model):

Yes, she made it as a supermodel despite an arm growing out of her head! Good for her!

Well, these are two extraordinarily beautiful young women, and both would be great. But we've got our own potential House Of Style host, who we feel brings a lot more to the table:

MTV and CW Join Forces In The Feud With TV Guide

So apparently, MTV and The CW have stopped buying ads in TV Guide (Hey, times are tough, right?). TV Guide is retaliating by unlisting all shows from either network, and suddenly, it's like West Side Story up in here...

TV Guide Magazine is trying to fail. At least, that appears to be the case for many TV critics with today's bombshell that, according to Variety, the listings section for the magazine will no longer include schedules for such networks as the CW and MTV.

The magazine also targets older viewers, and one argument is that youth-based channels like the CW and MTV simply don't appeal to their readers. Why then does the magazine still offer listings for networks like The N? And why is there a story about the CW show Smallville in this week's issue? (buddytv.com)

Both good questions, and we have a third: Who actually subscribes to TV Guide Magazine any more? With TV listings available online and/or from the cable system itself, who would bother? Sorry TV Guide Magazine, seems like your days are numbered.

Anyone else kind of weirded out by those images showing up in papers and on the web of the normally cheery Dora the Explorer crying big ol' tears because Viacom (her corporate papi) and TimeWarner couldn't reach a deal over how many millions of dollars they needed to make piping MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, and other networks into your eyeholes, thus threatening your daily intake of Dora, The City and Colbert?

Well, no worries -- a last minute deal brokered between the corporate behemoths have insured that you, Flavor Flav, and Carlos Mencia reruns will be on our DVR's for at least the next couple years. So stop crying, Dora. No, seriously, cut it out. Damnit, mija, we are serious here. We see you when we close our eyes!
