Chace Crawford Wants Kevin Bacon's Role in the "Footloose" Remake

Now that Zac Efron hates musicals, Gossip Girl star Chace Crawford is apparently more than ready to take his place in the upcoming remake of Footloose. We like to think Chace has just been waiting in the proverbial wings, ready to seize his opportunity the second Zac Efron drops a project.

Actually, part of us wishes Efron were still interested -- we would be so on top of a pretty boy showdown...

A source reports that Crawford is intent on starring in the movie, but the television show that has made him a star, Gossip Girl, may be getting in his dancing way. "There's a big overlap of when he'd have to shoot Footloose and the next season of Gossip Girl," my source said.
And Gossip Girl producers haven't been able to rejigger Crawford's shooting schedule to accommodate Footloose. "Chace may be hiring a big-league attorney to come in and figure out how to make it work," the source said. (E! Online)

See what we mean? Don't mess with a pretty boy when an opportunity to dance shirtless in an abandoned warehouse is on the line. However, we're not 100% on board with Chace Crawford as Ren McCormack for the new millennium, largely because nothing in body of work on Gossip Girl seems to indicate that he has either the acting or dancing chops to get this done right. That said, if Drew Barrymore can stop talking out of the side of her mouth for Grey Gardens, then maybe anything's possible.

The thing is, even though Zac Efron's hosting gig on SNL was decidedly unfunny, part of us wants to give him a pass -- Can we really expect a person that pretty to bring the funny as well? Isn't it enough for them to rest on their pretty laurels and let us admire them? But, then we think, by golly, if Justin Timberlake has accomplished anything in this life, it's proving that pretty boys can do more than Paul Walker it when it comes to Saturday Night Live.

We're not saying every sketch has to be "Dick in a Box," but the fact remains that the bar has been raised, and Efron's got some work to do. His opening monologue, thanking tweens for his worldwide success, was delivered with much half-smiling, and two-fingered sweeping of his own bangs. The underage drinking sketch was bland and forgettable. The real low point was a high school science fair sketch in which his German accent sounded like a cross between Arnold Schwarzenegger and Gandalf. Even the predictable HSM spoof fell flat. By the time the Yeah Yeah Yeahs were introduced we were wishing Alec Baldwin had gone for number 15...

Underage Drinking -- just why?...

Hideous German Accent -- in the interest of full disclosure, the phrase "nervous toot" did make us chuckle...

On the list of people we wouldn't want to see at a pool party, Brody Jenner and Joel Madden are right near the top. However, show us Queen Latifah, Lance Bass, and a margarita and we are in there like swimwear. Apparently, the folks at Funny or Die are totally with us on this...

Hard to believe Kim Kardash didn't get in on this action. Our favorite quote: "You smell just like a waffle." Ha. Even funnier than V.Hudge getting all shrill about poop.

Zac Efron's rising fame may have him fancy free, but he's no longer Footloose...

The High School Musical graduate exited the remake of the Kevin Bacon-led '80s classic because he felt another song-and-dance flick could thwart his transition into adult roles — which means he's looking for non-musicals. Efron had script approval on the movie and dismissed the latest rewrite last week, a member of the production told the site. (TV Guide)

Actually, we can kind of see where he's coming from with this. A Footloose re-make might sound like a good time, but before you know it you're starring in Dirty Dancing 2: Havana Nights. And, even though we secretly kind of enjoyed that movie (The Orishas featuring Heather Headley? Holla!), we imagine Diego Luna wishes he had gotten script approval ahead of time. That said, if Efron's claims to be looking for more "adult" roles, we're not sure 17 Again is going to get the job done.

"The whole idea of playing a 37-year-old guy as a 17-year-old was just the most exciting prospect for me," Efron told Gus Van Sant in Interview magazine. "I was really intrigued by the idea. I've always been kind of an old man, so to speak." (TV Guide)

Ah, we see now. 17 Again is actually an adult role. Silly us. Efron is so wise. Even if we're not totally buying it, we can appreciate that when you're sitting there getting interviewed by Gus Van Sant about a movie in which you play Matthew Perry as a high schooler who eats cheese whiz from the can, you need to make it sound as gritty as possible.

Sidenote: Is it us, or does Z.Ef kind of look like Pete from Mad Men in that picture?

This is our month to be skeeved out by Zac Efron and his ever-increasing greasiness. First, his mom's buying him mammoth amounts of condoms, now he's romping in the dirt and posing for pictures with naked girls...

We just want to say for the record that we LOVE Interview Magazine with a limitless and unceasing passion, and actually we kind of dig this photo too -- there's just something about Zac Efron and his infancy that still gives us pause. Are we the only ones who have a hard time picturing him doing anything sexier than dancing around in a Chachi Arcola leg bandana? And more importantly, who is this naked girl straddling Z.Ef in the mud?

The lucky gal is 20-year-old Lithuanian model Edita Vilkeviciute. Just before they started to get dirty, Vilkeviciute admitted to the High School Musical golden boy she didn't know who he was. "Since I've never watched American television, I didn't understand until everyone started asking me to get his autograph," she tells writer Leila Brillson.
But then Mr. Efron had something to share, too. "Zac finally admitted to me that this was his first real fashion shoot," Vilkeviciute says. "So we both got to relax." (E! Online)

We can't help it, there's something about the way E! Online says "Mr. Efron" that has us newly creeped out. What do you think? Is the photo sexy or skeevy? Feel free to weigh in below...

He's cute. He sings pretty. He has the swoopy hair. He was a child star. He’s got a new leading guy gig on CBS. We’re just saying, maybe we should take a closer look.

So Drake Bell, of Nickelodeon’s Drake and Josh, will be in CBS’ teen pilot Fish Tank starring as a teen who “winds up getting the family house to himself during the week when his parents start commuting.”

We love a teen-star turned slightly inappropriate crush object for 20 and 30-something cable watchers. You know, an actor who looks sixteen and fresh out of 3rd period gym, but is actually in his early twenties. Zac Efron has been the subject of slightly creepy crushing and attention for quite some time. Isn’t it about time for a new recruit? As Drake takes his tentative first steps into the CBS spotlight, we’ve got to ask if he’s man enough for Zac’s gig.

Drake’s got the tween network history and following. He occasionally looks marginally pubescent in the patented way of Efron. And he’s definently got the Swop-de-swoop hair happening:

Also, he sings (with a guitar . . . take that Zafron). And he shows up at award shows with a pretty brunette on his arm with somewhat swoopy hair and possible vocal talent.

Seems like Drake poised to take over the throne exceeeeeepppppt Zac has Drake beaaaat in one department: Shirtlessness. Drake seems rather fond of keeping the chesticles on lock down whereas Zaccy Zac . . ..

You know when you hear something that freaks you out, and yet, you feel almost irresistibly compelled to tell everyone else you know, just so you're not the only one who has to carry that particular mental image through your day? Just a heads up, that's what's happening here.

Here's a quote we could've gone our whole lives without hearing from High School Musical star, Zac Efron: "[My mom]'s like, 'I knew you were being sexual!' But she understood. My stocking was full of condoms this Christmas. She buys me the economy box." (Us Magazine)

We don't know about you, but we're not sure what skeeves us out more: the image of Zac Efron's mom buying her adult son an economy size box of condoms, the fact that he felt comfortable sharing that information with the world at large, or that, against our will, the phrase "economy box" has us picturing Zac and V. Hudge going at like rabbits 24/7. All we can say is, thank god he refrained from emphasizing what size condoms they were. We can't handle talk of barely legal penis size. We just can't.

Ok, so we couldn't resist another reason to bring up Robert Pattinson. We know, he's a movie actor. Shoot us. But the Oscars ratings have been pouring in and it looks like tweens couldn't resist him or Zac Efron!

Do we blame them? Hollywood hasn't seen this type of teenage, hormone-filled hysteria since Leonardo DiCaprio became an official hearththrob, post-Titanic. E! Online reports the hike in ratings.

The show's ratings among teens 12-17 and kids 2-11 zoomed, up 25 percent and 33 percent, respectively, from last year, ABC said, citing Nielsen stats. (eonline.com)

We're 99 percent sure that it was Rob 'n' Zac and not the anti-climactic Jen-Brad-Angelina non-meeting at the ceremony that drew in the youngsters. What, middle-aged love triangles aren't actually exciting? Who knew? The kids, that's who. [Ed.: We believe the children are the future.]

Oscars is struggling to bounce back from steadily declining ratings. High hopes for attacting fans of either Wall-E and The Dark Knight were dashed when that selfish bitch The Reader inexplicably got a Best Picture nod, so not surprisingly, like any other aging beauty queen, Miss Oscar is trying anything and everything to get attention. Step One: break out the fresh meat.

The Oscars are taking a dip into the fountain of youth.
Fresh off the news that Robert Pattinson is going to be a presenter at this year's awards show on Sunday, I'm told that Zac Efron will be doing the same.
Sources tell me the High School Musical hottie will present Best Original Song during ABC's live telecast from Hollywood's Kodak Theatre.

The big buzz online is who Pattinson will choose as a date. Are we the only ones who think he'll bring his dog, Patty? He did send her a Valentine's Day card, after all.

The Academy is getting some heat over the fact that they want some presenters to skip the red carpet, in order to keep people watching for them after the pre-game show. If they are smart, they'll let Pattinson do them both; nothing suceeds like success, and nothing says success like screaming teenage girls.

Okay, we're just going to say it: we're a lot weirded out by this picture. Why are V. Hudge and T.Dale perched on Zac Efron, looking like a trio of Disney Channel polygamists? Or possibly like oversized toddlers festooned to re-enact scenes from Big Love. Perhaps it's the ill-fitting nature of both of these bride-y garments that puts us in mind of a dress up box. A dress up box in Utah. We are perplexed.

Our Trip to "High School Musical 3"

Okay, so we're not saying we'd want to see a movie this way every week, but we gotta say our weekend viewing of High School Musical 3: Senior Year was worth it if only for the glorious spectacle of it all. The Disney Channel's third HSM installment took in nearly 82 million dollars worldwide -- the biggest global success since The Dark Knight. Disney has to be thanking their lucky stars these zany singing, dancing kids are so likable.

Here's some highlights from our experience...

First of all, it goes without saying that we were in the big theater (the one with the balcony), the line to get in was so long that it was in four sections, and woe betide anyone who should accidentally step into the wrong part of the labyrinth. Everytime we thought we found the end, some mother of three was waving angrily at us from another part of the hallway and yelling, "Hey, the line end's back HERE!" One kid spilled his popcorn in excitement before we actually got into the theater, and the sing-a-long began long before the doors opened. At one point, a twenty-ish girl in front of us turned around and said, "Do you think these kids are going to be singing during the movie?" which kind of made us wonder if she knew what she was getting herself into.

We feel like we should point out that while the 5-13 year olds were certainly the loudest and most enthusiastic age group in attendance, they were not the largest. That honor belongs to the 18-25 contingent. The most amusing age-group by far was the late-twenties-early-thirty-somethings that shuffled in the spilled popcorn, cleared their throats and talked about the election to distract themselves from the fact that they were voluntarily standing in a mile-long line sans children to see high school kids break into song in the cafeteria.

We weren't bothered by it. We even smuggled some tacos into the theater in our backpack so it really would be just like high school. A couple of things we tallied on our knee with a sharpie:

Number of homemade HSM t-shirts: 5

Number of times the audience broke into audible singing: 7

Number of kids we saw clutching either the DVD of one of the previous HSM movies or the soundtrack CD: 4 (Why? What are they going to do with those in a movie theater?)

Number of times Zac Efron's appearance on screen elicited spontaneous applause: 8

High School Musical 3: Get in Line Kiddies

So, here's what's happening: the Disney Channel made-for-TV franchise, High School Musical, is hitting the big screen this weekend and the advanced ticket sales have smashed the previous records (held by Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, The Lord of the Rings, and all the James Bond films). You may not know this about us, but we at the Remote Island LOVE a mob scene. Frenzy is our thing. So, you'd better believe we're going to be there amid all those pre-teens clutching their pearls with nervous excitement. Don't worry, we'll report back on Monday with details from the fray (ideally involving priceless quotes from aforementioned pearl-clutchers). Should we make one of those personalized fan t-shirts with glitter paint and a bedazzler?

Listen, it's not like we hate Zac Efron. Sure, the overly disheveled hair gives us pause, but, you know, mostly we feel like he's harmless. But Us Weekly's star of the year? Has he done anything this year besides High School Musical 3 and the movie version of Hairspray? Granted we're not actually sure what criterion Us Weekly uses to determine star of the year -- is it a tabloid thing? The most pictures in Disney Channel Magazine? Most ridiculous abs west of the Mississippi? (Okay, we felt a little cougar-ish on that last one)...

For the record, we're not here to begrudge anyone success, we're just saying if we were forced to pick a celebrity that might be an alien using extraterrestrial mind-control to propel their earthly popularity, Efron would be right behind Tom Cruise on our list of suspects. Maybe that's why Tom's so quick to offer up advice to the HSM stars? Uh huh. Yeah. Just put that in your pipe...

Jesse McCartney Goes "Greek"

Actor/singer/songwriter Jesse McCartney is all set to join the cast of ABC Family's college dramedy, Greek. We were relatively nonplussed by this news. Other than being fairly weirded out by this picture of him, we barely know anything about Jesse (okay, truthfully, we've seen a bunch of Summerland re-runs on Noggin at 2am), but we think of him as being much beloved by the tween set (not even really a teen heartthrob) -- at best, a B-list celebrity, not so much popular with Greek-watchers. But whatever, maybe he really wowed the producers in his audition with an a capella version of Beautiful Soul. Will his turn on Greek will give him that final push to super-stardom? Our feeling is, you never know -- perhaps some of former-co-star Zac Efron's magic fame dust is still lingering in the air...
