 There has been entirely too much said on behalf of "boundaries," particularly for women, and we have already been suffocated by traditional notions of privacy. If I could have a total moratorium on people asking me, in that plaintive desperate voice, "But where do you draw the line?!" I might be able to entertain this question reasonably in, say, twenty years. We have already drawn lines, and welded the chains of all the traditions that have kept women down and human sexuality retarded with superstition and shame. If someone kicks off their heels and dares to show a bit of honesty or imagination, I feel like applauding them, even if they're a bit a of klutz about it, or don't handle the results in a perfectly charming way. It's a miracle anybody rebels in the first place. Every woman in this round table has written candidly about sex, and although I don't know you all, I know many of us are attracted to sexual adventure and experimentation. Yet we certainly all have secrets, and unformed thoughts and special intimacies with people we have never really articulated in print or anywhere else. It's really just a preemptive phobia to imagine that sexually outspoken women make themselves universally naked. Conservative and fearful women use that bogey-thought as an excuse to avoid simple things like: We try things in life all the time that we have second thoughts about, or vow to do differently or not at all in the future. We reveal one layer of our unconscious only to realize that it's seven leagues deeper under that. There's no reason to fetishize sex as an area where lack of control is imminent and pathological. People who insist on characterizing sex in that way are letting their Puritanical forefathers speak through them, and I've had quite enough of it.
