Question 3:
Most of you have described a confrontation with some boundary, be it part of yourself, society or the media, "feminism" or other women. Yet these conflicts seem to have encouraged your voices as intellectuals. Is there anything to be said for boundaries, or more traditional notions of privacy? Could we suffer from too much sexual candor?

Betty Dodson:

All I can say about boundaries is that they are there to be pushed and gotten beyond. Traditional privacy is a bullshit notion, especially now that we have an electronic cloud hugging the world. The government probably has our Nerve conversation documented and filed already. If we had been committed to sexual privacy, we'd have kept our mouths shut. And I'll bet we've all suffered from too much sexual candor. I know I have. But would we have it any other way? To give us credit, we have all experienced some form of success by speaking out about sex. To paraphrase someone who said it first, praise or blame will always be a momentary thing. The harshest critic is oneself.
I'll always embrace sexual expression in any form it takes. Including all the Al Goldsteins and Larry Flints, who in their own tasteless way, fought the good fight for more freedom of sexual expression. With that said, I'd like to go on record as a post- menopausal feminist by stating that at the age of sixty-eight, I'm proud to be a slut having sex with women and men for fun, getting paid to be a sex coach, still vibrating with low-down scuzzy fantasies, and having all the orgasms I want. Let the sexual evolution of the millennium begin.
