 This is two questions. Do we suffer from too much sexual candor? We suffer from too much candid sexual dishonesty. The prevalence of false images of sexuality do, I think, hurt us all. The endless parade of anorexic young beauties and muscle-bound young boys, almost all of them white, is a harmful image. The almost complete lack of sexual images of ordinary folks of all sizes and colors and ages is also harmful. Candid and honest images of adult sexuality wouldn't hurt, I believe. But that's not what we have in this culture. Do we need boundaries? Oh, good golly, yes. There's an essential difference between boundaries and limits. I want to stay out on the edge, exploring my limits -- the internally imposed, psychological limits of fear, defensiveness, and so on -- but I can only do so by setting up boundaries within which I feel safe. You can do yourself real harm by forcing yourself into territory which feels dangerous -- we venture in there slowly, step by step, and it's only by clear-cut boundaries that we can do so. My own sexual philosophy of tolerance for behaviors I find distasteful or disturbing comes from this belief -- each of us determines those boundaries for ourselves. What is strange to me is normal, normative, safe to another. And vice versa. If we respect our own and others' boundaries, limits begin to fall away. Again, we don't find much of this in our culture!
