One Sunday after the BYPU (Baptist Young People's Union) and just before night church assembled, Jewel Wilder, a thirteen-year-old stepdaughter of one of the church deacons, suggested that we go around to the rear of the church where we could be alone. I had been returning goo-goo eyes at her for weeks in hopes to someday reap the fruit of her charms. So between the two services we hurried to the backyard of the church, where we immediately embraced. I was in the vineyard of hope that she, as fast and bold as she seemed to be, would put an end to my virginity that night once and for all. What I needed was a little encouragement from an aggressive girl.
I handled her flow of kisses all right until she reached to gain possession of the untouched master of my desire then I grew like a weed. I was not prepared in one way, though ready in another, as she had observed during the kisses. Sin itself had much to do with my inability to go through with the act and with frustrating fear I flew back around to the front of the church and entered the services. The sermon seemed miles away.
Not six months later, Jewel's older sister Doris seemed to challenge my shyness. When the charm of Doris came forth, I yielded to her suggestion when BYPU turned out and followed her to her home two blocks away. She settled us on her back porch and asked me did I want to go with her. She led the way after that and guided me to satisfaction. I was manmade in an instant.
I learned later that all during my "first show," the next-door neighbors viewed but did not attempt to interrupt the amateur performance. Instead, after the show, they reported the act to Doris's father. Her father was a deacon of our church and he reported the incident to my father at prayer meeting that following Tuesday. The ball was rolling and I was sure to catch it. (St. Louis, 1940)
