Too Late for Jesus, Too Soon for Rehab |
He was eighteen and played guitar, even wrote his own songs. He wrote one called "Horny Bullfighter." I thought he was brilliant . . . Although I was five months short of being fifteen, and could not think of one wise woman who had given herself at such a young age, I wasn't long for the world of chastity.
I don't remember my first home run or first drink or first anything as well or as vividly as the permanent surrender of that one thing that is valued above all else to a Southern woman. It was also the first time I experienced massive regret. Because it was boys who turned into men, beer that turned into tequila, and pot into speed . . . and then they all turned on me. It was too late for Jesus and too soon for rehab, so I turned inward and waited for life to catch up.
Apart from tender young loves, which sometimes work out, I believe that it is impossible to have sex as young as I did and realize the loss you are incurring, especially at the moment you are doing it. (Atlanta, 1972)
