What's Protection? |
I was developing a regular following at the Chesterfield Club in Albuquerque . . . I began to be aware of one regular customer, a pretty, young girl named Diane. I don't remember what she wore, although I recall my own wardrobe of cowboy shirt and trousers, string tie and Western hat.
Diane was always with her mother whenever she was inside the club, as the house rules stipulated. Her mother was a friend of my uncle Dick, and I recall visiting with Diane regularly, but I can't remember how long I waited before asking her for a date. I do remember how old she was when she told me she was pregnant. She was fifteen.
Diane was the first girl with whom I had ever had sex, and, according to the calendar, she got pregnant the first time we slept together. I had not used protection because I had never heard of it. My dad had given his children the tired, old lecture about the birds and the bees. He told us how we could make babies. He never told us how we could prevent making them.
