Shenanigans |
|
|
After the wedding, he asked me, "What do you want to do tonight?"
"Go dancing," I said.
"No," said he. "You must be quite tired. Why don't you go up and get undressed?"
He then came up and kissed me on the lips the first time ever for me! Then he started some other shenanigans. I leaped from the bed crying. The whole night I, in my nightdress, sat downstairs sobbing unceasingly and hysterically. My groom walked downstairs somewhat disgruntled and placed the Bible next to me. It was opened to the passage that started, "Wives, submit yourself unto your mates," and so on.
The next morning, I went home. My mother and father tried to explain to me that such was a natural part of marriage. My aunt, who was visiting us also tried to talk to me. And all were quite upset with me.
That afternoon, as well as that morning, our doctor tried further to help me face my personal dilemma. Reluctantly, I returned to my groom and he promised to help me learn the art of love.
It was so messy. It was the only part of marriage that I could not stand. (London, 1920)
