Six Tips for a Greener Sex Life
Lower your carbon footprint with your legs in the air.
By Stefanie Iris Weiss
In the next few decades, sex won't even be an option if you're busy dodging climate-change-induced hurricanes, tsunamis, floods, droughts, and other scourges of the earth. A greener sex life starts with personal choices, but there are some pretty nice side benefits too — and not just for Greenpeace's sake. Use the following tips to get more sustainable satisfaction.
1) Avoid Babies

The number-one tip for a greener sex life? Use birth control. Even if you forego the rest of these tips, don't forget to wrap it up, snip it, or otherwise block those swimmers from doing what they aim to do. 129 million babies are born every year, and 76 million of these are from unintended pregnancies. 18 billion diapers are sold every year, and 90 percent end up in landfills. So you can screw in compact florescent bulbs 'til the organic cows come home, but if you forget contraception, you might as well take daily flights from New York to L.A. in your private jet while slurping down endangered-shark-fin soup. Your carbon legacy is a scary thing to contemplate: every child you have adds 9,441 metric tons of carbon dioxide to the planet. So consider adopting, having one fewer child, or not having children at all.
Looking for the greenest birth-control option? The planet-friendly I.U.D. has gotten a bad rap for the wrong reasons, while the Pill continues to gender-bend our fish and harm our bodies. Avoid polyurethane condoms at all costs: if you're not allergic, natural latex is the way to go. Try French Letter Fair Trade condoms or Glyde vegan condoms. And remember not to flush your used rubbers!
2) Give the Gift of Eco-Bling

If you're taking your relationship up a notch and believe that expensive gifts are in order, think before you head for the diamond district. Post-Blood Diamond, the gem industry has claimed major reform with the U.N.-sanctioned Kimberly Process. But this issue has not gone away. It remains nearly impossible to find a truly conflict-free diamond. And there's dirty gold to contend with as well. If you must drape some bling around the throat of your intended, there are plenty of alternative options to the standard ring-finger rock. Buy recycled or secondhand gold, and remember that vintage and costume jewelry also win major points. Rely on organizations like nodirtygold.org, greenkarat.com, communitymining.org and earthworksaction.org for up-to-date info.
3) Wear Sustainable Skivvies

Face it: if you think there's even a minor chance of someone getting in your pants, you usually wear your best Saturday-night bloomers. Bring the whole plan up a notch by slipping on sustainable underthings. Go for organic cotton or hemp made with vegetable color dyes. Check out Urban Fox, Eco-Boudoir, or Yves Behar's Pact underwear.
4) Lube Up Organically

When it comes to lube, be sure to employ the "Would I eat it?" test. If you wouldn't put it in your mouth, don't put it into any other orifice (or even on your skin). Opt for certified organic, chemical-free formulations. Avoid parabens and glycerin, a ubiquitous ingredient in conventional lubes that can actually increase your chances of contracting an STD. Coming on the market soon: Intimate Ecology, a revolutionary line of certified organic, therapeutic personal lubricants that contain immune-boosting probotics.
5) Ensure Your Vibes Are Good

If your favorite vibrator is aging, recycle it and get yourself a green-spanking new one. If your vibe was manufactured prior to 2005, it's probably full of phthalates — toxic, carcinogenic plasticizers used to make hard plastic soft. This is the last thing you want anywhere near your warm, moist nether regions. Buy only from trusted sources like Jimmyjane, a manufacturer of beautifully designed, life-changing toys that might end up making your human partner jealous.
6) Have More Green in Bed

When it comes to your mattress, there's more to fear than the errant bedbug. Conventional mattresses are doused in a blend of toxic chemicals that seep into your lungs and irritate your skin. A queen-sized innerspring mattress contains about one-and-a-half pounds of chemicals. Since we spend approximately three-thousand hours a year sleeping and sexing in our beds, a green mattress is one of the best investments an ecosexual can make. Natural latex is an excellent alternative for those that dig all things Tempurpedic, but don't want the toxins. Latex is a sustainable substance that has the same give as memory foam, without the bad stuff. Make sure you go to a trusted dealer (like Scott Jordan). If you're not into latex, try organic cotton, hemp, soy blends, or beds made from castor beans. Try savvyrest.com and sleepworks.com for more information on green bedding.

I have one more strategy that works for me: not be able to convince anyone to have sex with you. But if you are having sex, these seem like good tips.
"129 million babies are born every year, and 76 million of these are from unintended pregnancies."
I find that statistic fascinating - what source is it from?
Global warming is more hype than science, spurred onward and upward by suit-and-tie marketing guys looking to upsell you on the latest fad. And honestly, the last thing I'm thinking about when I'm balls-deep in a sweet hairy snatch is my carbon footprint. Fuck that, life is too short.
You can easily get guaranteed conflict diamonds, made right here in the U.S. Check out apollodiamond.com, for example.
Wow, I really need to take another look at my mattress. I had no idea there could be so much living in there
I avoid babies everytime i have sex.
Can you please explain to me how the birth control pill is harming my body? Sources?
Global warming isn't even caused by people. Its just the natural variation of temperature. The whole universe is warming. Somehow I doubt we're that powerful. 30000 scientists are suing Al Gore over it. I'm disappointed at nerve for posting something based on blatant propaganda. Got global carbon tax?

Come on, this can't be for real. just 1 word, bullshit.
This article has a serious lack of sources. Here's an idea: Find a reliable source, quote it instead of just spewing crazy shit. Did you know that every year llama's are pushing the human race closer to insanity via llama mind control?
I agree with Dee. Those llamas are outta control!
This article is bullshit. Why make assumptions when we can just let ExxonMobil and the military conduct experiments on our atmosphere? Global warming is just a liberal ploy to create a new energy industry while reducing our need for a presence in the Middle East. All resources are substitutable so there's no need to conserve. Hasn't anyone else taken economics?
Birth control pills are not "harming your body." Like any other medication, they have risks and benefits. Benefits (besides not getting pregnant) include a drastically reduced risk of endometrial and ovarian cancers, a reduced risk of ovarian cysts, decreased premenstrual symptoms and menstrual cramps, reduced risk of anemia, and treatment of endometriosis and acne. Risks include blood clots, headache, and mood changes. By all means, assess the risks and benefits as you see them, but don't unilaterally brand oral contraceptives as evil.
How are conflict free gold and diamonds green? Yes, they might be good for other reasons, but that is not an environmental issue.
The disbelief in global warming is a true testament to the failure of our educational system. Mainstream scientists have moved from debating whether global warming is occurring to investigating solutions and determining how bad it is going to get. The fact that 30,000 so-called scientists are suing is just proof of how free America is that it allows clear idiots the option of presenting their case in court. Nevermind the fact that it will likely be thrown out long before it goes to trial...
I bet we could triple our carbon emissions and nothing bad would happen. Oil comes from the ground, it's natural.
@Dee - Amen! Though I am enjoying some of the suggested underwear... hmmm...
Save a tree, eat a beaver?
I'm just mainly bothered by "Don't have babies". The birthrate in Canada (my homeland) is declining in a major way and there are actually not enough births to naturally replace the population. There are a lot more factors in population to consider than just the total population of the world all over. 129 million sounds like a lot but what are the corresponding infant mortality rates? The article raises more questions than it answers.
Don't argue with Zero Population Growth. No ZPG advocate is ever going to change their mind. It's worth promoting birth control and making it available to people who need it, but "Don't have babies" is both intrusive and misanthropic. What absolutely kills me is that having a child is compared to selfish indulgences such as flying and having shark soup, while having a child is (hopefully) a selfless act of giving love to another person. The glib tone is just not helpful and I say that as a lifelong environmentalist.
You could just eliminate your carbon footprint entirely, if you're really green.
The belief in global warming is a true testament to the blind manner with which our culture follows mass media.
@Eric. Asbestos and uranium come from the ground too. They're "natural". Does that mean they can't be harmful?
Oh wait, am I debating a troll? Booo.
Ah yes, global warming is reported by the mainstream media. I say reported because they are reporting on peer-reviewed studies published in respected scientific journals. This is as opposed to fringe/extremist reporters and bloggers who have no background in the field, have not published any peer-reviewed studies in respected scientific journals and aren't even reporting on such studies because there aren't any such studies that support the view that global warming is not anthropologically driven. But yeah, you're right, our blind culture follows mass media. And since you mention culture, I can't help but think maybe you're myopically focused on the US. Nevermind that the US is one the of few hold-outs on ratifying the Kyoto Protocol...
You very conveniently omit all of the peer-reviewed studies conducted by respected and qualified environmental scientists and researchers that contradict the global warming alarmists. You also conveniently omit the whole "Climategate" fiasco. As with just about everything, once an issue becomes overly politicized the truth becomes nearly impossible to decode amongst the ravings from BOTH sides.
@REALITY Widespread belief in anthropogenic global warming is the "true testament to the failure of our educational system". The whole solar system is warming up. The ocean is warming from the bottom up. etc. etc. Of course that doesn't mean that going carbon neutral wouldn't be beneficial economically, financially and socio-politically (if that's a word). But there's no reason to jump to apocalyptic conclusions about something we have very little understanding of.
I would rather jump to apocalyptic conclusions for shared pain and shared protection than allow a few to profit while many are put at risk.
i happen to agree that birth control pills are evil. but go on and take them if you want to, i sure won't be. i'd rather have the emotions, sex drive, body weight, and health benefits of not being on any medication.
