What kind of job description came with this position?
It’s described as "modelling." Really it’s, "Stand there with your shirt off in boardshorts and zinc and glasses."

Of course. I feel like an object and a tool, but the job is really flexible, and it pays pretty well for what you do just standing there.

I think the relationship might be over for good. I think it’s just taboo. You just don’t do it. And if you do do it, then the trust won’t ever be there. There are relationships that can continue and flourish afterwards but it just takes tons of work. The damage is done.

Unfortunately, if memory serves, this is not merely a summertime phenom. I remember those poor shmucks standing out there in some pretty brisk weather.

Most of those Hollister/Abercrombie "models" are gay/bisexual. Trust me. But kudos for finding the straight ones! I tip my hat to you.
How dare women treat these models as pieces of meat! We learned from a recent "talking to strangers" column that it's a horrible horrible thing if a man is too forward with a female model.
I think the assumption that male models are gay is stupid. It speaks more about you than the model himself:
1: If you are a straight man, it's a way of dealing with your jealousy.
2: If you are a straight woman, it's a way to rationalize it if they are not all over you.
3: If you are a gay man it's wishful thinking.
4: If you are a decapodian, it's because you don't understand human anatomy and assume that humans have 4 sexes.
Can I be a straight woman who's worked around a lot of beautiful male actors and just assumed models worked the same way? Also, a straight woman who (like, I'd imagine, almost any straight woman in NYC) realizes that there is a higher percentage of gay men with ripped bodies and no bodyfat than straight men?
I think the assumption that women think all men should be falling over them and if not they must be gay is stupid. No women I know think like that, even the really gorgeous ones.
Thank you, Nope. I work in a modeling agency, and let me tell you, the number of hetero-flexible male models will astound. Are all male models gay? Of course not. But there are more than one would think, especially among the more high-earning ones.

@chinaski - You're comparing salaries of government workers to the private sector; two completely different realities (but yes, still depressing). Also: some teachers I know here (in NYC) get paid a lot more than $56K a year.
In NYC, teachers may make that. But I can assure you that I did not make that when I taught.
Teachers can make decent money if they're willing to suffer long enough though...

This article was a great read, witty answers and reading some of the comments were great. I especially liked the negative ones from people who think these guys are a watse of time YET read it and commented on it. I'm a manager at the A&F on 5th Avenue. First of all, a couple of these greeters were fired for giving this interview. Secondly, they do not make 56,000 a year doing this. They make about $15 an hour, plus they get free outfits. 90% of the male greeters are straight, about 100% of the girls are. So I don't know where you people get some of your information.
