2) "the guys on the ACLU side ... do this stuff for free" - are you sure? That links to Nerve - which may be a <em>trial</em> witness, but are you an <em>expert</em> witness? A general trial witness almost never is paid, an expert witness may be paid quite a bit, per above. Civil-liberties expert witnesses may work for dedication to the cause, but not always.
