It's horrifying because you find a little sadist in yourself hiding behind JT's words. --ap 06/26 |
This is the second time I have read this story, I used to have the book when it first came out but I loaned it to a drag entertainer friend of mine and he let a bunch of his drag friends read it and it is now in limbo. I'll get another copy when it comes out in paperback or if I find it used and have the money. I hope The Heart is Decietful Above All Things stays in print for a long time. It is now my favorite fiction title and I think it is great literature. My previous fave was Life Drawing by the late Michael Grumley, and it is now out of print. I hate that because I belong to a few gay lit discussion groups and I would like to get these ideas out in circulation.
Last night I was discussing J.T.LeRoy with a couple of guys who are a little older than me, a retired school teacher and his partner of 25 years, also retired, and one guy who is a little youngr who is an accountant at the Snohomish county jail. The older guys were so horrified by the subject mater that they had a hard time thinking about it as literature, the younger guy was a little less sheltered and was able to see the greatness of this watershed work of gay male fiction. If J.T. writes another book I will be waiting outside Beyond the closet bookstore in Seattle to buy the first copy, I liked Sara too. --jvd 02/27 |
