Mr. Benderson's is easily the best prose I've ever read here!

This is a fine essay, as much about the unexpected arousal of compassion as the expected one of the libido. A darknes permeates the piece and seems to ask for some sort of light, or perhaps just a lighteninng of the burdens each person.

After reading Bruce Benderson's wonderful essay, I felt that I had to respond to the person who claimed that there is no discrimination in Romania against Hungarians -- it is well documented that there is, as per the following... FROM: EDUCATION IN HUNGARIAN LANGUAGE IN ROMANIA "For more than seventy-five years the ethnic Hungarian community in Romania has been threated by elimination, being subjected to various ways of aggressive assimilation by the different Romanian governments. This intention did not cease to exist after 1989. On the contrary, the extremist, xenophobic, anti-Hungarian forces representing it act even more openly. Anti-Hungarian incitements, fascist instigation became accepted in the Romanian Parliament and unfortunately Romanian politicians concerned with real democracy also watch helplessly how the leadership of the country is more and more dangerously shifted toward an extremist direction." URL: http://mineral.umd.edu/hl/archive/0001-0400/0355.html or: "Ethnic tensions were exacerbated in March 1990, when several thousand Hungarians in the city of Targu Mures celebrated Hungary's national holiday by draping Hungarian flags on city buildings. This was construed by many Romanians as a deliberate provocation, and violent clashes broke out in the city and the neighboring areas, resulting in deaths and injuries on both sides." Bruce Benderson is our Bataille. I still haven't recovered from my reading of his novel User. Wherever I turn I think I see his character from that book, Baby Pop. Then I realize that it is a hallucination. Benderson's writing has that kind of haunting effect. I just hope this fucking Romanian doesn't start turning up in my supermarket, at my place of business, along the banks of the Hudson, and so on. The nerve!

Another energetic intense piece by Bruce Benderson. He has captured a missing core part of the soul of modern man. Bruce's love of life, and all that he surveys, comes across and the Romanian wanders endlessly in our imaginations, haunting us with the solidity of his captive life. Just as in USER, and TOWARD A NEW DEGENERACY, Bruce Benderson has contributed another insight about male sexuality that cuts to the core of what it is to be a male homosexual. --monkglen
