I loved your story. Prince was the beginning of the end of adolescence for me too. I remembered loving Michael Jackson forever and then I went to summer camp in June of 1984 and when I came back everyone was talking about "Purple Rain". I went to see that movie with my friend Alderene. I was so sexually charged and seemingly freed from all my inhibitions listening to his music. The scene with Prince seducing Appolonia didn't help either. I remember the next day junking Mike and moving Prince in. He was my musical svengali for ten years until that terrible "Black Album" and then Terence Trent D'Arby took over.

My hometown was put on the map because of Prince , so many of my pubescent memories are set to his soundtrack, as well. I thought he was a musical genius! Occasionally I'll revisit my old cassette tapes in hopes of conjuring the magic of his kinky lyrics and dirty beats, but it's just not the same to my adult ears. I often wonder what it was about his music that I was so drawn to... I think you've described exactly that. Thank you for a glimpse into your purple past.
