what's amazing is how well todd field understands the unspoken .. he never relies on action, fluff or formula but instead delivers real human quality, much like milan kundera did in his earlier works - the unbearable lightness of being and immortality ... but all in all, what a great film -- a dvd worth buying and re-watchig again and again ...

It was a beautiful, wrenching film. And I agree with Rufus: I thought the relationship with the father and his son's girlfriend was not all that important. I had actually forgotten about the scene where he looks at her in that way at the beginning of the movie (because it happens so early on, before you realize who either character is). The look was part lust, yes, but also a moment when the father realizes what his son sees in her. The mother only ever sees a single mother, uneducated, blah blah blah. But the father is able to glimpse what makes his son fall in love with the woman.

During Hollywood's current output of bland, overdone blockbusters, it is refreshing to find a gem like "In the Bedroom" and even more gratifying to find a talented and genuine director behind it.
