i know i've read this story by an american writer from mid-20th century. i think it was j.d. salinger but i'm not sure. the original end is more ambiguious, not so neatly tied up, while the 21st century version is more explicit. can't help but think this writer is paying homage, but "nothing new under the sun" is especially right in this case.
