Excerpting is a tricky art. In the end, one needs to read the book.

Yes -- this commentary has nothing to do with the author and entirely to do with whoever's decision it was to allow this piece to stand on its own here. What was the rational? There is such thing as an excerpt which can exist without its context; this is not one such example.
