Reader Feedback on "Supermasochist: A Review of Bob Flanagan's Pain Journal"
i was incredibly moved. i am reading up on bob flanagan for a drama essay on how his, and other extreme performance artists work may have been influenced by a 'classical past'. i became caught up in the journal and lost time, not realising that he died in 96. That was an unexpected shock. i shall read more on him and will certainly write about him in my essay, highlighting his boldness and unique way in which to go about things. jude hey_jude_5@hotmail.com

I would like to say that your review of Pain Journal is great, not the slightest tone of judgement in relation to Flanagan's work. Work that has made the private very public. This is very refereshing. Pain Journal to me is another link to the amazing person that Bob Flanagan was. Many people don't seem to understand how one can be touched and influenced so profoundly by his writing, or should I say by the matter of fact manner he uses to demystify some topics thought quite taboo in general society. I find his manner and inventive strategies for auto-erotic play very inspirational. For me it is afirming to find that others have also been touched my his sardonic witt and honest nature.

I knew of Bob through the L.A. poetry scene, and thought I was taking my date (now my husband) to a poetry reading in a downtown performance space one night 15+ years ago. It was frightening as well as mesmerizing. This is art. This is art. This is art. I thought only of the pain then, scarecly understanding the pleasure and his needs. Projected images behind the actual activities. Oddly quiet. Barely a cough; not even from Bob. Nervous laughter. People shaking their heads, and leaving. My husband still jokes about it. To him it was just a joke. Now Bob is dead, having lived longer than anyone expected. Now my young son has a friend who has cystic fibrosis, and I go to fancy fundraisers to support research for her - and for Bob. Now I watch SMBD performances at a crazy San Francisco sex club, and hold my breath as my own lover slaps my ass until it is cherry red in front of the leering crowd. Little did I know. Thanks to Bob? Thanks for your poetic, insightful review. Lalalalaluna
