This is highly crafted and distilled prose. Brilliant work. One only wishes there was a novel to go with it.

JHY, I felt exactly the same way! I thought the narrator was a woman too up until the last two paragraphs, when I decided to scroll down to the bottom for a second to take a look at the author and saw it was a man. And I agree, the story *was* much better when I thought it was a woman. --LES 11/29 |
Nice- I really liked it! Well, except for the lack of (or very very very very weak) conclusion. Finish it! Very interesting. I like your writing style. I like some of your descriptive details (sound of the train, the pornos next to the toiletries) and I like your lack of details in other areas (we can use our imaginations- I certainly remember sex at 17...). Very nice. Thanks- --LaW 11/28 |
That has got to be one of the most HONEST testimonials about young Christians I've ever heard. Take it from me, a horny bible camp worker...Ah, the memories...!! --TKL 11/25 |
Dear Jay Kirk,
I do not know whether this bit of ether will reach you, and I will write you "care of" at "Harper's" but I was wondering if you might not send me a more direct e-mail address or just an address. I'm an associate professor at the University of California at Irvine and am about to embark on a search for a writer of . . . shall we call it "literary journalism." I admire your work. Michelle Latiolais (latiolai@uci.edu).

Okay, so there's a picture of a man and a women on the cover. I should've known the main character was a man. I still think the story was better when he was a she... --jhy 07/25 |
The entire time I'm reading this, I'm wondering whether the main character is a man or a woman. Did it say anywhere? In anycase, I was highly disappointed to find that it was a man. I enjoyed the story more when I thought he was a she. --jhy 07/25 |
This story rocked so hard. It would make a great film script.
Send this to Jay. Let him know if he doesn't want to write it up in 100 slam bang pages of dialogue and EXT - RED SQUARE - NIGHT, I do.
Love,

Ok, really well-written and really hot. But the ending just kind of cuts out in a confusing way. How does the author feel/react to his girlfriend (?) getting fucked by the Russian? What happened once he saw what was happening? Did he join in? Stand there and watch? Turn around and leave? Did he feel sick to his stomach? Turned on? None of the above? Was that the end of him and Monica?
Seriously, it sucks when a story ends with a great big huh? like that. --JL 05/02 |
jay, you're me hero. --yr 05/01 |
I'm giving you both a good old Ezra Pound "Bah!" I liked the story, until the cheap ending. Oh, and the fart into the supposed bug, that's a bit far-fetched. Not that it couldn't happen, it's very possible, it's just trite.
