Reader Feedback on "Bride and Prejudice"
"Bride and Prejudice" is -- as the clergyman in the piece says - "a light not to be hidden under a bushel." Everyone should read it. As with the priest, it made me blush too. I know Calhoun a little but feel unprejudiced in saying "Bride and Prejudice" is juicy, embarassing, and a hoot to read. Jerry Saltz; Senior Art Critic Village Voice

love may just have "kind of happened" to some people, but i for one think it's great to see someone talk about marriage in these terms. it's nice to see it not continually reduced to either "getting maried is giving up and being bourgeouis" or "marriage is soo great, everyone should do it" type absolutes. Marriage has a lot of baggage attached but sometimes you find yourself wanting it on your own terms, not everyone else's, and that makes it exciting. It doesn't have to be either A) you choosing to be just like your parents or B) swearing off the whole institution. Sometimes you find yourself inside a human institution and you chose to be there and that both affirms you and affirms the institution in interesting ways too often left unexplored. Good job, Ada.

See!? Thats what I mean.. take it seriously, death do you part, and dont do it if you don't see it being permanent. Just live together. Why get married and mock the institution. (I am, for the record, not religious, raised by atheists who gave me a hyphenated name because "MARRIAGE IS STUPID" and they refused to do it.)

I think this article is quite sad. It makes me feel like something's wrong with me for being in a conventional relationship....like I'm not cool because I haven't slept with 300 people. I guess I just didn't spend that much time thinking about the political ramifications of whom I fell in love with and how I chose to express that love. It just kind of happened.
