There is a thriving punk community throughout China, your essay makes one to believe that it's all just American pop culture, which sadly a vast majority have embraced. In cities like Xi'an (where I am currently living), Wuhan, and Beijing there exists underground rock/punk bands popping up. Some of them look like as if they have seen one too many films on the Sex Pistols or the Ramons, as if they are trying to rebel and not sure how, so they imitate. A lot of these bands produce some great music and put on some rocking good performances. I write about some of them on my blog: http://www.metanoiac.com/timinchina/
