No thoughts on Bellow, but I'm a fan of Phil Martin, for sure. I want to be lulled and comforted by the lyrical prose, but his X-ray vision demands that we read carefully. He sees through the fat and exposes the bare bones of all our frailties-- not only his subject's, but his own. --mt 04/24 |
I am a fan of Bellow's writing. I grew up measuring other novelists against his skill. Your excellent essay reminded me that idols often have clay feet and in Bellow's case perhaps ingrown toenails. --jb 04/17 |
Now THIS is a good article. Thanks. You've left a few things doodling in my brain... --IB 04/13 |
nice piece, bittersweet, sage. --sam 04/13 |
While I admire Bellow's work, I do think it's interesting that the Social Thought guru couldn't get it together socially. --SDW 04/12 |
