Ada Calhoun is a must read. She can bring it every time, and lyrically too.

Alas... the attack on free speech is not the sole territory of the Republicans. Need I remind Raw Nerve that the FCC reformation bill passed 99-0 in the Senate? And the one Democrat who abstained wanted a stronger bill! The next time someone says "protect the children," show them the difference by taking some snot nosed brat (preferably theirs). Show the guy your latest issue of Nerve. Then ask "which is worse?" Show the kid the cover. Then roll up the magazine and smack the living shit out of the kid. I think it gets the point across. Warning: don't actually try this. You'll probably get slugged twice. But you'll only deserve it once.

Its pretty clear that the current anit-sexual-liberation and and anti-pornography attitude in liberal and progessive circles is a direct result of the greying of baby-boom feminists. I'm a greying man who traveled in anti-war and pro-sex circles in the 60's and 70's. I was the beneficiary of "girls say yes to boys who say no". And even after the early feminists began to (justifiably) attack the sexist division of power with the anti-war/left movement, they continued to identify with sex-is-a-good-thing. But of course, they were hot and cute and desireable, and us boys would bow our heads and go along with feminism in order to get laid. But now these women are in their 50's. A few are still hot and cute, many aren't. And like 50 year old women of every generation, they have an issue with the hotness and cuteness of the gerations of women after them -- particularly since men seem to "stubbornly stick to their evolutionary biology nature and lust after women in their most firtle years. Since they don't want to consider themselves prudes, they don't attack sex and sexiness directly, but focus there attention on pornograph and the claimed degradation of women it represents. And like we did then, we now older boys in their social circles go along with the line, if only not to rock the boat.

Absolutely true--our society is quite interested in porn, the porn industry, sex, and taboos, but it is UNTHINKABLE to actually admit it. Think of how many times you've read a news story about a Champion of Moral Turpitude who ends up caught with kid porn all over the computer, or the Keepers of Decency busted for solicitation. America will just never get it right; we can't seem to decide if it's ok to be a prude or to let the inner slut out once in a while. Great article!

It's nice too be reminded I'm not the only one annoyed by America's schizophrenic relationship with sex.

Ada, you are so right. I can think of only one reason for possible censorship of "in your face" sexuality in the media: sexual content may freak out or hurt people who have experienced sexual trauma. After reading Don't Look Now by Heather Lewis, and based on the people I have met in my life, I am convinced that there are dark areas in the lives of common and uncommon people that need to remain buried or hidden for their own emotional and psychological survival. When 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys have experienced inappropriate sexual contact before adulthood in our society, we must be sensitive to the harm we do when we expose vulnerable individuals to conflicting and confusing input. When human sexuality is broadcast 24/7 in our culture, some poor souls can't handle it. For me, I prefer to: "walk softly and carry a big stick" when it comes to sexuality and intimacy. Absolutely, eroticism is essential and phenomenal, but it seems that very few of us have been able to masterfully weave eroticism into our lives. In this respect, nerve.com is somewhat of a pioneer in its new age approach to pulp. Nerve walks a tightrope of appropriateness when it comes to sex, but most importantly encourages a forum for honest discussion and examination of human sexuality, while maintaining artistic and journalistic standards. Not easy to do, but you are doing it well.
