Loved reading an essay with "respectable smut peddlers" in it! Liked your suggestion that Last Tango was the last film to even try to put actual human sexuality in a dramatic context. Wish someone would explore the strange phenomenon of reducing an elementary part of virtually everyone's experience to fuzzy slow mos and swelling soundtracks --neither of which has ever featured in my own experience. Compare, for instance, how thoughtfully sex has been rendered in literature --even as far back as Ancient Rome and Greece. But humans go ga-ga over motion pictures, or picture in motion. Maybe it's some kind of hardware glitch in our brains? --JW 01/26 |
