Look, I know sci-fi is uncool and all, but if you want real visceral, existential horror -- the horror of persecution; the horror of religion run amock; the horror of obliteration and of war and of being under attack by a relentless and unfathomable enemy, you must see Battlestar Galactica.
It really is the best drama on TV; watch the miniseries and first season. The writing is as good or better than West Wing; the lead actors are doing some of the best work of their lives. PLEASE check out this show, esp. the miniseries and first season.
