You know that feeling, when you go to a party at someone’s house and you’re so surrounded by hipness that you utterly envy the host but still want to be their new best friend? Yeah. That very thing happened a few nights ago, at our weekly Lost screening party. The host, Leo, was a German-born grad student at UC Berkeley, and the evidence of his travels was everywhere.
But what most caught my eye was the humble home-bar setup: a sleek stainless steel ice bucket, cocktail shaker, and jigger, paired up with a bowl of matches and all displayed in front of an intriguing vintage poster. The whole tableau spoke to Leo’s eclectic tastes. He’s a traveler, and the matches represented a few spots he’d been to in past years (one from a punk venue in Berlin, one from a bar in Copenhagen). The poster was a reproduction for a Polish movie that he picked up at a flea market in Amsterdam, the ice bucket and jigger came from CB2, and the cocktail shaker was a treasured find at a vintage store in North Oakland.
And while I’m still a littl envious of Leo’s good taste, I can’t help but think I wouldn’t leave my apartment much if I had this kind of setup at home.
