Songs to Get Sexy To: Lovemaking

Not everything’s Peaches and soul. Sometimes, you gotta slow things down for those particularly amorous nights. In today’s edition, we’re covering sexy songs to make love to.

Owen is the pseudonym for Mike Kinsella, a veteran of many Chicago bands. It’s one man with a guitar (though the albums are very fleshed out and orchestrated) singing about life, love, relationships, drinking, and sex. When I first got into him, I used to describe him as the Dashboard Confessional of the college years. Whereas Chris Carabba would sing about getting a kiss at the end of a night, Kinsella leaned more towards getting drunk and trying find someone to go home with ("Poor Souls").

Though his songs can be of the whiny/bitchy variety (sample lyric: "Tell your dad to come on over and we’ll talk/ you bring the drinks, I’ll bring the ‘fuck you’s), his songs are all beautifully finger-picked and have interesting arrangements.

On his album No Good For No One Now, he might’ve written one of the sweetest sounding songs about sex.

"You’re smart and kind and

you’re too easy on my eyes.

I know it feels good, so good,

we should tonight.

Cause maybe my mom’s right,

our good deeds won’t save us,

just true faith in Jesus.

So in the name of her lord

Let’s do what we shouldn’t some more."

The song sounds like it’s all sweet and innocent, but surprise: it’s all about the bangin’.

Of course, Mike Kinsella would be nowhere without Mark Kozelek. Having led sadcore stalwarts Red House Painters in the 90s and performing as Sun Kil Moon now, Kozelek has been around the block a few times.

Red House Painters’ Songs for a Blue Guitar and Sun Kil Moon’s April are perfect backdrops for a night of lovemaking. Hell, just the track "Have You Forgotten" will suffice.

But my personal favorite of his albums for that deed is Old Ramon, particularly because of the song "Cruiser":

"Won’t you whisper in my ear?

You look so good against my mirror

And you’re my baby full of joy

You’re my erotic brown eyed toy

You’re my exotic black haired toy"

Kozelek says all the right words so you don’t have to.

Find most of his records at Caldo Verde Records.

Aloha’s Sugar is just plain hypnotizing. A perfect record from start to finish that can follow the ebb and flow of a special night with your lover. With vibraphones and singer Tony Cavallario’s strong, but non-disruptive voice reverberating through the air, the jazzy rhythms with latin leanings will keep those hips moving.

Look no further than the track "Balling Phase" for your sexin’ needs.

"See me welling in your eyes, a field of fireflies.

Take me somewhere we are close by.

See me hobble through your hallway.

Squint to see me lead you somewhere we are us.

Where alarm clocks chirp out dust,

non-beliefs are hushed – and then there’s us.

There’s just us."

Not only this song, but this entire album is full of moments to climax to that you may just need to put it on repeat.
