Songs to Get Sexy To: Rock and Soul

For the second edition of this week’s special "Songs to Get Sexy To," we’ll be focusing on those raucous, high energy rock and/or roll/soul songs.

Obits – I Blame You

Nothing like dirty, sexy rock and roll that doesn’t suck. Rick Froberg (formerly of the more rockin’ Hot Snakes and the epic Drive Like Jehu) has mellowed out a bit and now follows standard rock conventions. But make no mistake: this album is perfect for those nights when you and your boyfriend/girlfriend have had much too much bourbon to drink and have absolutely no intention of sleeping.

[$10 – $12, Sub Pop Records]

The Make-Up – I Want Some (though all their albums are great)

With a sprightly rhythm section, melodic guitar lines that know when to take a backseat, and a howling voice, The Make-Up’s neo-mod, funk, soul grooves will get things moving in the bedroom. Though their lyrics are vaguely political in nature, that shouldn’t stop you and your lover from getting down and then dancing on the bed afterwards.

[$10, Dischord Records]

Various Artists – Numero Group’s Cult Cargo and Eccentric Soul compilations

And since we’re leading in that soulful directions, why not dive headfirst into the world of late 60s/early 70s funk, soul, R&B, and afro-beat??

Rife with powerful vocals, keyboards, horn sections, and just plain awesome musicianship, Numero Group compiles the best of these rare records from that bygone era. Forget that trite Marvin Gaye stuff; this is the real deal.

I highly recommend the Cult Cargo and Eccentric Soul compilations. I can’t find any good videos of the performers on these comps, but just head over to Numero Group’s website and sample some tracks. You won’t be disappointed (neither will your girlfriend/boyfriend).
