Tools of Attraction: Hats

Ryan, stylist

How many hats do you own?
I probably have forty or fifty hats.

What’s the best thing about wearing a hat?
The best thing, I guess, is that they’re good if you have no hair.

What’s the worst kind of hat? A kind of hat you would never wear?
You remember those Naughty by Nature type hats? The ones where the ends came down
and you tied them? Those are the worst. I’ve actually seen them return on the scene; it’s
pretty disgusting.

Jacket: Issey Miyake, shirt: Jeremy Scott, sweatpants: thrift store, wingtips:
vintage, hat: J. Crew

I have yet to meet someone who didn't use a hat as a substitute for a personality (Armed Services excepted, of course).

I was in LA last summer and the number of white guys in fedoras was mind boggling. The sheer ubiquity of them went beyond funny to almost creepy.

I wonder if it's a Mad Men thing.

Depends on the fedora, depends on the white guy. We still kind of like ska-punk out here, so that probably accounts for a good half of them.

I am so sick of those slouch hats Shira's wearing-is there something holding it on to the 10 percent of your head that it actually covers or is it just the wearer's sense of self-satisfaction that keeps it in place?

Also, no pork pie in the whole bunch? Lester Young is spinning in his grave.

Hello, I have a question: in street fashion articles and blogs, why are items purchased in a vintage store designated as "vintage" rather than giving the designer/brand? I suppose it makes sense if the label is missing.

I wonder that myself. Sometimes people will give me the brand name and I will make a note of it, "vintage Dior," but more often people don't seem to know the brand. I think people tend to pay less attention to brand names when in thrift stores so the designer doesn't stick in their memory. Also, people probably think calling something "vintage" makes it sound more fashionable than saying "secondhand collared shirt, originally from American Eagle"

Since the majority of these style interviews take place in NYC, how about: TOOLS OF ATTRACTION: STUFF WE BOUGHT FROM STREET VENDORS. Everyone's got something.

I wear a hat instead of sunscreen. Or if my head is cold.

If I won the lottery, I would have so many hats, and they would all be those floral things that clip onto your hair. I would ALWAYS be Derby-ready.
