What is hipster fashion?
I think hipsters go against the grain, they don't just wear what's trendy. What they wear is meaningful, like the graphic t-shirts with rock bands. The lyrics from those bands are meaningful, as opposed to most famous and big pop anthems or songs coming out of the major rap labels and all that stuff. They put more thought behind what they're wearing.
Why do people love to hate hipster fashion?
People love to hate what's unfamiliar. If you look back in history, it's always been that way. People hate what they don't understand.

I might have days where I look like a hipster. I realize that because I have friends who are hipsters. Today, I'm just happy to be wearing color because it's usually all black and grey.

I like the whole hipsters look, it is waaay better than a lot of generic garb that clothes certain strands of NYers.

I find most hipsters to be uninteresting and rote, and their fashion is an attempt to externally manufacture a personality they so obviously lack.

One problem with this feature is that it treats hipsters as a subculture, which they're really not. Members of other subcultures willingly identify themselves and are typically proud of their membership. No one wants to be a hipster. Everyone has negative connotations with the word.
Calling someone a hipster doesn't place them in a certain group. It usually just signifies that you think they try too hard to stand out, wear stupid clothes, listen to really obscure music, drink PBR, do things "ironically," etc. I'm sure everyone who reads Nerve fits multiple hipster stereotypes, but no one would call themselves a hipster. It's a stereotype and an insult, not a distinct group.
So the title of the article is an oxymoron. Being a hipster is by definition bad, but their fashion choices are held up as something to be emulated or inspired by. The article would work better if it had a more satirical tone, but it fails as a straight fashion guide because no one wants to look like these people.
So, that's my overanalysis of an irrelevant topic for the day. On the upside, I think I upped my hipster cred by at least 10 points with that rant.

I think that just because hipsters don't identify as hipsters does not mean there are not a subculture but rather not counterculture (which implies action). A part of the identification of being a hipster is at this point to deny being a hipster. It's hard to deny that they are not a part of mainstream culture YET until consumer captialism has completely engulfed their culture like other subcultures (punk, grunge, etc). Also, it's hard to say they are not a group because there is so much commonality and signfiers. But there is much more diversity within it that people give credit like hipsters who are also activists and such.
