When Science Is Sexy

Last night the Exploratorium had its monthly After Dark event, which boils down to three basic elements: interactive science exhibits, booze, and a whole lot of curious people. At 6pm, the museum closes for the munchkins, the bar opens, and the fun truly begins. Imagine drinking beer while rediscovering the house of mirrors that blew your five-year-old mind, or learning from the full-body heat sensor that a martini actually makes your nose colder. Yep, absolute awesomeness.

The whole thing reminded me that science can be pretty damned sexy. But if you don’t have the Exploratorium nearby, you can still reap the rewards of booze-fueled scientific exploration.

For the truly inspired, there’s the Thames & Kosmos advanced chemistry set:

It’s pricey, but it’s also the only chemistry set out there that’s really worth anything. Plus it might just impress the pants off your date.

For the less scientifically-inclined (and I count myself in this category), I’d recommend an intimate screening of Darren Aronofsky’s Pi:

It’ll introduce some sexy-smart science into your evening without the, um, potential loss of limbs.
