What Are You Listening To?

We get three New Yorkers to take off their headphones and chat.

Sophie, 27

What are you listening to, and what do you like about it?
Y A N C Y. I like everything about it. It was my favorite album of last year. I saw him live twice. I was sold on him before I saw him live, but now when I want to think about the shows I listen to the albums.

If you were on a date with someone, what kind of music would you be psyched that they were into?
I'd be okay with them if they had some grunge music interests, like Nirvana or something. Or if they were interested in hip-hop.

What's your favorite Nirvana song?
This might be a little wimpy, but I love the MTV Unplugged album. "Dumb" came on my iPod when I was getting off the subway just now. I also like "Heart-Shaped Box."

Listen: Nirvana – "Dumb"

How about a band that would turn you off?
I'm just not a big fan of country music. It's a little too sentimental; I don't mind sentimental if it's in front of serious orchestration, or something very simple, but that middle-of-the-road sound, not so much.

What is the most embarrassing song you have on your iPod right now?
I have Sergio Rivero, who was the winner of the Spanish version of American Idol in, I don't know, 2006? It's a cover of a song Jon Secada was famous for, but it's in Spanish. I love that song. I'm probably going to listen to it after you guys leave. [laughs]

That's a double whammy: Jon Secada and a Spanish American Idol winner.
Named Sergio.

Who should stop making music forever?
Ouch, umm…

This is the tough question, so we tend to save it for last.
I'm an artist myself, so I wouldn't tell anyone to stop. I'm sorry to be so diplomatic, but when I'm over the hill, I wouldn't want people telling me to stop, you know?

Jude, 29

Where are you from?
I'm from Australia.

What are you listening to right now?
At the moment, an Australian brother/sister duo called Angus and Julia Stone. It's pretty folky, singer-songwriter kind of stuff. They're pretty big at home. They recently took out what's called Triple J Hottest 100, where everyone votes for the best song of the year, and they got #1 this year.

Listen: Angus and Julia Stone – "Big Jet Plane"

When I think of Australian bands that have gotten successful here, I think of Jet. What do you think about them?
I saw Jet at a festival before they exploded, and I thought they were great. But they became just the typical, commerical success, you know? I don't know if they really did anything memorable past that first album.

Are there Australian bands that Americans should be listening to?
There's a band called Bluejuice. They're really good and they played over here recently as well. Cat Empire, who you've might of heard of — they've played over here a few times as well.

Listen: Bluejuice – "Head of the Hawk"

If you were on a date with someone, what's a band you'd be psyched that they were into?
Radiohead. In Rainbows is probably my favorite.

What'd you think of The King of Limbs?
It took a while for me to get into it. It's a bit of a grower, but little by little I liked it more. There are some great tracks on there. I don't mind it. I know a lot of people did mind it because it had a Thom Yorke-solo-album feel to it.

Is Radiohead your favorite band?
They're definitely up there. They're just so amazingly talented. What I was saying earlier about bands whose every album sounds the same — I think Radiohead has managed to avoid that. It's always refreshing and you aren't quite sure what they are going to come out with.

What is the most embarrassing song you have on your iPod right now?
It's pretty strong at the moment, but there's some Aussie hip-hop that some people would say is bad. A band called The Hilltop Hoods. I don't mind them but some people might rip on them. Everything else I'm okay with.

Eugena, 24

What are you listening to?
It's Raphael Saadiq.

Listen: Raphael Saadiq – "100 Yard Dash"

Oh, the new album?
No, I actually haven't downloaded that yet. It's the last one, The Way I See It.

What's your favorite album that's been released this year?
I really like the Adele album.

If you were on a date with someone, what's a band you'd be psyched that they were into?
Maybe something from high school that no one ever listens to. Actually, if he said Bad Religion, I would be really into that, because no one ever says them.

Okay, reverse of that question. How about a band that would turn you off?
Screamo or anything like it, but that said, I like country, so I don't have the high ground.

That's interesting, because a lot of people we've asked have said country is a turn-off.
Really? I love it. It's so funny! I listen to it when I work out.

Who's your favorite country artist?
I just have a Pandora station with country on it. I do really like Miranda Lambert, because she's sassy.

What is the most embarrassing song on your iPod right now?
Aside from my Disney albums, I have this one song called "L.A." by Murs, and I just play it because I'm from Southern California.

Let's go back to the Disney albums. What's your favorite?
The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, "Out There" from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. That had some really good belt-out music on it.

Do you enjoy singing in the shower?
I don't anymore. I used to. But once when I was seven, I was singing in the shower and my grandma thought I was crying. So I stopped.

Who should stop making music forever?
U2 could probably stop. Their time has passed.

Let's talk about rap. Do you listen to rap?
My ex-boyfriend used to listen to a lot of rap and hip-hop. I like Murs. J Dilla is good. I like Lupe Fiasco, but he's kind of mainstream. Does Biggie count?

Yeah, Biggie counts!
Okay, I like Biggie.

But you're from the West Coast. What about Tupac?
I know I should have listened to a lot of Tupac growing up, but I didn't. I only ever really listened to Biggie.

Listen: The Notorious B.I.G. – "Gimme the Loot"
