Five Albums You Should Be Listening to Right Now: Mannequin Pussy

Last month, we told you Mannequin Pussy was its own sweet flavor of grungy bubblegum punk. By the end of CMJ, they’d kidnapped our attention with a rollicking rendition of Motown classic “Do You Love Me?” at their showcase. We immediately fell under the haunting, Kubrickian spell of lead singer Marisa Dabice.

The Philadelphia-based trio (childhood pals turned degenerates, they say) deliver quick-hit song shocks with unbridled vocals and melodic riffs. The effect is as seductive as it is raw. This week, we’re lucky to have Mannequin Pussy share their favorite albums of the year and explain to us the redeeming elixir that is country radio.

Mannequin Pussy’s Picks

ovlov-670x670

Ovlov, AM
Honestly, I had never listened to Ovlov until they had “broken up” earlier this year, but in the best turn of events it turned out that they didn’t break up! This record is so good that despite coming out last year, it is still definitively one of the best records of 2014. Ovlov are our dream tour-mates for the sole reason that we want to watch them play every night for weeks. Seriously if you haven’t listened to AM yet, just go. Go do it now.

Listen to: “Where’s My Dini”

beth-700x690

Beth Israel, Dental Denial
Speaking of dream tour-mates, on our most recent tour we played 4 shows with Beth Israel and holy shit. Have you listened to them? It’s really hard to pick one song to single out because the record is one of those start to finish kind of things. We feel like they’re best described as dark heavy genius pop with a drum machine, it’s the record for your impending winter. We miss them already.

Listen to: “Dead Bodies”

Egyptian Lover, On The Nile
The first time I heard this song it was the only song I listened to for two weeks. I’m not overstating that, I became fully obsessed with every sonic detail of the song. It’s my dream cover song, I just need to figure out that guitar solo at the end. This song is perfect.

Listen to: “I Cry (Night After Night)”

Dolly-Parton-Burlap--Satin-418546

Dolly Parton, Burlap & Satin
Close to impossible to pick a favorite Dolly song but this ranks pretty high in songs that are both perfectly composed (with a glorious key change) and also hilarious. Only Dolly can sound so sweet when handing out threats.

Listen to: “Potential New Boyfriend”

Tim McGraw, Let It Go
Thanasi pretty much exclusively listens to country radio when driving, which is both endearing (lots of great pop country songs out there right now) and infuriating because you end up hear the same songs over and over and over again. This song we heard on the last day of tour and it’s just a great song. The song is all about how you don’t want to lose what you got because how could anyone call you baby like the person you already love?
