Albuquerque news station warns residents to watch out for Pedobear

File this one under I Can't Believe It's Not The Onion. Channel 13 in Albuquerque, New Mexico recently featured a news segment that, in all seriousness, warned viewers of the terrifying new threat infiltrating their city: Pedobear, apparently the official mascot of pedophiles everywhere. This is what happens when people with AOL accounts encounter 4chan:

Now, it should go without saying that law enforcement and government officials should take pedophilia very, very seriously. Protecting children from abuse is extremely important… which is exactly why this is so infuriating. Fiona Dias, aka that talking-head lady, isn't wrong, exactly, when she says that if they can protect one child from abuse, an investigation is worth it.

But the truth is, warning people to watch for people with Pedobear stickers on their cars isn't worthwhile; all you'll be finding are people who use 4chan, and, while I'm sure lots of people would love to see 4chan users in jail, the sticker carriers ain't using Pedobear to announce their pedophilic inclinations to the world. There has to be a better way to protect children, because if this is the best plan we can come up with, that's a bad sign.
