Another oil rig which officials are calling a platform, not a rig, exploded eighty miles off the coast of Louisiana yesterday morning around 9:00 am. There were thirteen people total were on the platform. There was only one injury and no deaths.
Coast Guard officials described the burning structure as a platform, not a rig, which means it was not actively engaged in drilling. The platform is owned by Mariner Energy. It's not clear yet whether the structure is leaking any oil. Many of the crews that responded to the blast are those in the area for the cleanup of the BP oil spill, which followed the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon rig on April 20.
The explosion occurred not two months after Obama's public BP address, in which he called for a drilling moratorium off the Gulf coast. That mandate, clearly, was swiftly abandoned.
