Sometimes you can actually hear Republicans think to themselves, "Fuck it, I'm going to go for it." That's what Hans Zeiger, a Republican who hopes to join Washington State's House of Representatives, must have been thinking when he claimed that the Girl Scouts are godless, baby-murdering lesbians.
You're right, it's not fair of me to twist his words. Here, watch him twist them himself:
The Girl Scouts allow homosexuals and atheists to join their ranks, and they have become a pro-abortion, feminist training corps. If the Girl Scouts of America can't get back to teaching real character, perhaps it will be time to look for our cookies elsewhere.
Those green vests are pretty gay, but something just doesn't add up here. I mean, if all Girl Scouts went on to become either homosexual women or straight baby killers, then there would be no more girls, and thus no more Girl Scouts. And if there are no Girl Scouts, there are no Girl Scout cookies. And if there are no Girl Scout cookies, then... then there is no God, oh shit, Hans Zeiger is right! Noooooo!

I was in Boy Scouts for over 8 years, and I can say that in my troop/pack, religion was not very central to what we did at all, nor was conformity a central tenet. We were all encouraged to do what interested us and to be ourselves, by the time i was 16-18, the kids I had grown up in the scouts with were everything from pot smoking hippies, to footballer jocks, to mohawked and pierced punks. It taught me a lot about various things and I wouldn't trade it for the world.
As for the pedophilia, I'd say it's definitely far less spread in scouts than it is in churches.

As a lifelong Girl Scout, I'd just like to note that the proper name of the organization is, "Girl Scouts of the United States of America," or GSUSA, not "Girl Scouts of America." It's only the Boy Scouts who use "America" to mean the United States, when it properly refers to two whole continents.
Also, I would have to agree somewhat with the characterization of GSUSA as a "feminist training corps." The tagline for the organization is "Girl Scouts. Where girls grow strong," and we seek to empower girls to fulfill their potential. Since feminism is just the radical notion that women are people, that mission sounds pretty feminist to me. Of course, I think that's a *good* thing.
But, see, apparently they SHOULD be taught the strength of character it would take to get back into the kitchen and make him a sammich...

Unbelieveable. In a world now wraught with poor media portrayals of girls and women, Girl Scouts is one of the few places girls really get to open up and be themselves. Share with each other their fears and dreams, learn to be strong leaders and that boys/men do not dictate their self-worth. Not to mention that Girl Scouts, individuals and troops, all over the country provide thousands if not millions of hours of service to their communities each year. Mr. Zeiger is clearly misinformed about the role of GSUSA.
Well, I was in girl scouts, but all the older girls scouts in my troop in high school were pregnant republicans married to their farmer republican husbands by their senior year. Now I decided to become a bisexual girl scout and even a republican. So I can have babies, do have babies, am a girl scout leader, and I like women and men. But I don't bring any of that into my meetings. I just teach the girls how to camp, build a fire, take care of the earth, recycle, volunteer for non-profit entities and that sort of thing. You know help the world be a better place. Those activities that most wealthy republicans don't take the time to teach their kids they just throw money at. See I'm just a poor Republican. Now, I don't recall ever talking with them about abortion, atheism, agnosticism. We've talked science, done a lot of engineering experiments because only 20% of all girls go into science after they graduate. Trying to change that a bit. Oh I forgot, there was that one time I taught them about Native American Spirituality because we were on Indian sacred land. I think he forgot to say that we teach them to be heathens as well, but then that wouldn't have gone with the atheist thing at all, because heathens actually believe in a God type figure just not his. The Girl Scouts I belonged to practiced community, sharing, developing social and supportive bonds with other girls, woods craft and appreciation of nature, traditionally feminine skills (it was the Sixties and care not just for ourselves, but for our communities. Battening on and getting fat from the body politic, ignoring the poor and helping the rich to get wealthy, and sending the Boy Scouts off to wars in which their leaders had no plan and goals and always ended by throwing in the towel and leaving our guys and the people where they fought worse off was something we left to politicians.

I thought this guy's name looked familiar so I did about 30 seconds of research. Yep, he and I had a back-and-forth several years ago, about some anti-non-Christian-religion statements he made. I reminded him that part of the BSA Scout Oath - he's an Eagle Scout, BTW - includes being "reverent", which doesn't just mean practicing one's own religion but accepting that others have their own religions. And now he's lashing out against GSUSA for daring to encourage girls to be the best they can be. What an absolute nutcase he is.
As an avowed tomboy who wanted to be a Cub Scout more than anything else, I can safely say that the Girl Scouts were not even tomboy-friendly, let alone lesbian-friendly, when I was a kid. After all, what self-respecting tomboy would spend all day in her friggin' Catholic school skirt and then choose to wear a lame-ass green skirt instead of going home to jeans, t-shirts and Converse? So I don't think many butch lesbians would like it any better than this tomboy did! Cookie sales, crafts and cooking? I wanted to earn badges in outdoorsmanship, handyman and woodworking (ah, power tools)! I finally had to settle for 4H, which was fun and allowed pants. When my little guy became a Cub Scout, I was in heaven - he enjoyed himself, and I finally got to enter the forbidden world of Cub Scouting! (And it was every bit as fun as I had imagined!)

This is really quite insulting...as someone who proudly serves the military, I protect all the rights of ALL people. I don't care what you are. If anything, I think the GSA have it right in not discriminating against anyone to join their ranks. It should be about character, not about who you love. People seem to forget one thing about America. You have the right to choose. To attack that really attacks the very core of our nation, something I believe that our modern day politicians have forgotten. To attack the girl scouts in this fashion...i just have to say it's rather pathetic.

They are, instead, "The Girl Scouts don't support those evil things, silly!" The problem is not in linking GSUSA to these life choices or ideas... it is in calling them wrong! I didn't even realize there were still adults fighting feminism! Really?
it's both, if you ask me. linking GSUSA to things it does not support, wether those things are atheism and feminism or rainbows and unicorns, is wrong and rather stupid. so is demonizing normal and healthy things, ideas, and concepts. in other words, this has more layers of wrongness than bottomless guacamole dip.
God forbid that any parent would want their daughter to join an organization that would teach her that everyone has worth, or the right to make choices independently of other people. My daughter wanted to join Girl Scouts and I was hesitant to allow it because I mistakenly assumed they were a homophobic, right-wing organization like the BSA and I didn't want her learning that sort of BS. However, the more I read about Girl Scouts, the happier I am with the idea.
Last I checked, I survived 12 years as a girl in Girl Scouts and 2 years working at GS summer camps... and I'm not a baby-killing lesbian... I guess Scouts just didn't work for me!

As a lifetime girl scout, girl scout leader, and camp nurse I can safely say that girl scouts had absolutely NO impact on my being straight or pro-choice NOT PRO ABORTION! I do not think anyone is MADE straight or gay I believe they are born that way and yes made by god and I believe loved by god. Also I do not believe anyone is pro abortion; however people do believe in a woman's right to choose. I was in a CATHOLIC Girl Scout troop and I can assure you the topics of our meetings was not bra burning and baby killing!!! We learned to speak our minds, stand up for our rights, be leaders in the community, serve the underserved in the community and to thank those that serve and risk their lives every day so we can continue to do so. That is why every year our council sends hundreds of cookies to our troops overseas!

Omgosh, I don't even know how I found this link. I was a girl scout 30+ years ago and am now a leader for my one and only daughter, this is her first year she is 5yrs old. Now I may be a femenist, republican and pro abortion, but I can honestly say the girl scouts did not in four short years make me that way. Good grief if it did I'm sure I wouldn't be letting my daughter join, people specially men need to stop bashing things they know nothing about. Also as far as letting anyone join, isn't that what girl scouts is about friend to "every girl" last time I checked that means any girl, no matter her race religian, or sexual orientation. Seriously, I'm a girl scout. It's like this don't ask, don't tell. I'm not a lesbian, however I am pro choice. I am also Catholic, and other than the whole, anti abortion thing, I'm very devout. People need to realize that girls in girl scouts do it to become more confident and getting ready to enter the work force. People who say that we are lesbians, need to get off their high horse and actually look into girl scouts. Lets face it if we didn't allow lesbians and atheists to be girl scouts then they would not be preparing us to deal with every type of person. As for our uniforms, those are to unite us as a common good, and we are the future of America!

It is all about the money. The G.S.A. wants your money. Give now! It is a huge money maker, and it can pay out for you! My daughters are involved with it and enjoy it because they are sheltered from the corporate greed and politics of it. Kind of like Santa and the Tooth fairy. I really think that they have a good core message, but it is an organization that most parents don't take the laws of too seriously or G.S.A would have much fewer members and leaders. (Not good for profits.) I am involved because it is an activity filled with my daughter's friends at school. It is fun because the leaders make it fun, not because of money. I don't agree with the corporate greed and politics. I try not to take it too seriously, but when I do, it does make me feel a little uneasy about the message and value that is placed on power and wealth. Most volunteers and leaders are active and involved parents looking for help with their girls. The help comes from an established almost 100 year old organization with an agenda. Employees of G.S.A seem to be brain- washed for the benefit of milking out another 100 years of this monopoly. I am happy that I was able to stay out of trouble with the higher ups thus far. I am involved, I care, I shelter, and I am a bit of a rebel without the energy to revamp the G.S.A. Volunteerism at its best! Peace, but in an argumentative sort of way.

to be honest, I don't give a crap about what religion someone has. i don't care if they're straight, gay, bisexual, or transsexual. unless they're trying to get in my pants, then i'll just ask them to stop unless they're female. >.> as far as abortion goes? I am pro-choice and staunchly believe that it's OK until the fetus has reached the point where it could have a reasonable chance of surviving on the Outside (as in nearly equal to that of a newborn infant. until that point, it is NOT a baby and is just a Growth of cells. that's it.). women should feel free to express their opinions just as much as men and be paid identically, given identical rights and opportunities, all based entirely on personal merits. women are just as capable of doing stuff as men, and so when being assaulted by a woman, a man has every right to hit back or in some other manner stop her. if she's assaulting him, she is posing a very real threat. /shrug. i guess my point is that women should be confident in themselves and their ability to make their own choices and people who are against allowing such basic rights for women need to learn something: women are no less human than men and are no less valuable than men are in keeping the species alive. at least until cloning becomes a viable option. then neither sex is necessary! Gosh, in my fifteen years of being a Girl Scout and leader, I've never run across anyone with an agenda! Unless, of course, it was about what we were doing at that meeting. Like, you know...crafts, planning the next service project, what we were doing on the camping trip, or earning badges. I guess some old white men are scared when someone tells a teenage girl she doesn't have to fit into their stereotype of barefoot and pregnant, should be able to read and god forbid, think for herself! The only Scouting hate I ever ran across was from a Boy Scout leader who was trashing homosexuals and people who didn't go to his church. Rock on, Girl Scouts! And pass the Samoas!

In all my years in Girl Scouts and then again as a leader for a few years, the subject of abortion never came up, nor did religion, nor did homosexuality. This is not to say that there may be some leader out there, some where that may have inappropriately brought up the subject. But does that make the organization a bad thing, That would be like calling all Republican idiots, just because candidate Hans Zieger said something stupid. I'm a 12th year girl scout and I have to say, I sort of agree. I love Girl Scouts and its taught me alot but I do wish they would have stronger christian roots. sad to say, but their going downhill fast.
Perhaps he is more of a Camp Fire Girl type.
