Glenn Beck likens Norway shooting victims to Hitler Youth
By Jessica GentileJuly 26th, 2011, 12:30 amComments (32)
Given the frequency of his nutjob rhetoric, it's pretty hard to be shocked by Glenn Beck these days. And yet, you'd be hard-pressed not to be outraged by the insensitive comments he made about the recent tragedy in Norway. Because, yes, he literally likened the kids who died to Nazis. Here are his direct words, as spoken on his radio show:
"There was a shooting at a political camp, which sounds a little like, you know, the Hitler youth. I mean, who does a camp for kids that's all about politics? Disturbing."
Pretty sick and disgusting words, right? Someone should probably inform Beck that the Tea Party does in fact run summer camps. Just saying.

Really? That was actually sort of my first thought when I heard that it was a political camp. I just didn't say it out loud is all.
that's right, because people of any political opinion = nazis
Glenn Beck, a one-man advert for birth control!
Right-wingers just can't accept that the Oslo terrorist was inspired by Tea Party and Progress Party rhetoric.
Yeah, I heard this bit and it was in no way as it's being presented. Once again, nerve fail.
I'm proudly lib, or maybe just a free thinker, and I don't find what was quoted here to be offensive. I would imagine -- and what Listener wrote tends to support my suspicion -- that the additional context might even convince the most ardent Beck-haters that this quote, anyway, isn't such a much. Which isn't to say Beck isn't an idiot. I just don't see it here.
You mean the context in which he tries to twist the event to make it look like he predicted this would happen because radical Islam (even though the shooter was christian) was taking over Europe and that multiculturalism is evil? Yeah, the context fits the quote perfectly.
Furthermore, what kind of context would be needed to make saying something like that be alright?
Yeah, I listen pretty much every day and have yet to hear anthing remotely similar to what you describe. Never let the facts get in the way of a good smear, eh, julian?
I actually listened to the podcast this quote was from and he said those exact things. I mean, so, yeah.
Here I'll quote it verbatim for you (although I had to edit some of it for clarity sakes because he uses a lot of Ums and doesn't complete some sentences):
"I get up Saturday morning and I write to Scott Baker - 'I haven't seen this yet anywhere, and I can tell you exactly what is going on, somebody just needs to follow the story. And, what is going on is exactly what I said would happen. I warned that this would happen last fall."
"I warned that what was coming in Europe and I will detail this - but last fall I said Europe is going to go into financial trouble and it is also going to go into problems with radical islam because the cities are being overrun and the cities are also - many of them, for instance in France, they are being [...] the islamic, towns, or sections are getting into the middle management of all of France, and this is happening all over Europe."
"That's what Gurt Wielders is saying, that political correctness and multiculturalism is killing Europe, and he's right. If you look at multiculturalism and you are still for it, well, then you better look who's company you're in- because Angela Merkel, Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, I think, Spain, France, all of them have come out and said 'Boy was this a big mistake, Multiculturalism does not work, and it's killing us.'"
Or you could just listen to it yourself if you still think I'm twisting his words or making stuff up: http://mediamatters.org/mmtv/201107250006
It's not like the Tea Party has summer camp for kids. Oh wait, they do. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/sfmoms/detail?entry_id=91236
Well yeah, no big deal, right, comparing a political party's youth branch to the Hitler youth. Surely it made all sort of sense in the context of a douchebag's talk show.
Just because in the US youth politics is left to privileged college students means that the whole world has to follow suit. Who does a camp for kids that's all about politics? Well, gee, I don't know, maybe the "kids" are actually interested in politics, maybe some of the the kids are even old enough to vote.
The idea! Crazy Europeans!
The truth is Glenn Beck suffers from Godwin fever. If it's not the Tea Party, it must be a little Nazi.
And, gee, I don't know but maybe you have you head up your ass.
And, gee, pot meet kettle.
can't find rebuttal: insult the person by calling them names instead
Ah, fuck you.
Don't be too hard on ADD. He tried to form an argument but degenerated into name calling, true, but at least he tried to form an argument. Unfortunately, it was a losing effort.
I was talking about Nah, but, whatever. (I should start using those @ things)
I actually very much agree with ADD, even if he did a little name calling himself.
A losing effort on you, indeed. It's quite alright, since you have no argument to make anyway.
Not to mention: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LACyLTsH4ac
The irony is that Breivik drew the comparison to begin with - one of his many gripes was with the "Stoltenberg jugend" - and one of the aims of his spree was to discourage people from joining the Labour party.
Shooting 80+ people might slow down enrollment.
Oh yeah, OK. That settles it. The whole time, I was just blinded by my own ass.
They're young and members of a party: just like the Hitler youth! Wow. It was so obvious. Thank you Nah, for helping the world see clearly.
You're welcome. I'd work on that ass though.
Sure. As long as you take care of your Godwin fever.
There are political camps of all stripes, including ones run by Republicans fundies. Doesn't mean any of this has anything to do with "Hitler." Beck is not a serious thinker.
Try explaining that to Nah.
Oh come on, guys, give him a break. After all he can't insult the shooter, he was right-wing!
Oh, that Beck.
Yeah, I love his tunes man. O'Delay!
Zing!
See? We have fun here.
Yes, educating youth to be active in politics. Must be Nazis!
Someone call South Park - "dey took er jobs!"
Ya learn something new evreyday. It's true I guess!
