Italian company only fired women so they “could stay at home”

Italian workers protest

Facing hard economic times, Italian fan company, Ma-Vib, recently had to lay off several employees, so naturally they decided to only ax members of the weaker sex. That's right, thirteen out of the company's thirty employees were fired, and yup, they were all ladies. Their reasoning behind this policy is, sadly, not a quote taken from The Onion:

We are firing the women so they can stay at home and look after the children. In any case, what they bring in is a second income.

While gender inequality in the workplace is nothing new, it's still startling to read such a blatantly discriminatory statement that completely devalues female workers. It's 2011 and I think we can all agree that the only place sexism in the workplace belongs is the latest episode of Mad Men.
